Why was this fair moderator chosen? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Charles Ramirez59 said:Moderator positions aren't handed out just so people can "learn the ropes." This isn't a training seminar. If someone wants hands-on experience, they should just start their own forum and figure it out as they go. For instance, www.forumer.com lets you set up your own site using two different software options, so there's plenty of room to experiment.

Edit: Looks like someone beat me to the punch, sorry if I'm repeating myself. I'd delete this, but I'll leave it up for the sake of the link. 🙂

Given how many people keep asking the same thing, I think the amount of replies given is perfectly reasonable. 😬

Timothy Fowler39 said:The last two sub-forums in General don't even have a moderator... seriously, is it really that much to ask to let someone step up and learn the ropes on these smaller sections? It wouldn't bother anyone, and nobody would end up hating them either, since if we managed to get by without one until now, a moderator won't exactly be busy handing out bans all day anyway.

First off, this forum isn't some training ground. Second, this whole site is a business—part of a larger company with an owner. That owner picks the admins and moderators, who basically act as "employees"—even if they aren't getting a paycheck—to handle specific tasks. It’s actual work, not just a way to kill time when you're bored. It's a responsibility, not a hobby.

So, if you actually want to be considered for a moderator role—whenever the owners decide they need one, rather than just whenever someone feels like it—you'd need to be around for more than a month, maybe hit a few hundred posts, and actually contribute something useful to the discussions. You also need to follow the rules, show some basic manners, and demonstrate a sense of fairness, integrity, and common sense.

That's just the baseline to even get noticed. It doesn't guarantee anything, obviously, since there are plenty of other people meeting those standards. Usually, when a spot opens up, the current mods suggest candidates, and then the owner makes the final call.

Hopefully, that clears things up.

PS. There's a shortcut, though: just wire $1,000 directly to the company account or the owner. 😁

No, more like PC Modding. 😁

"Mod" is just short for modification—basically any change you make to the original setup. It’s all about what someone wants or needs, I guess. Maybe don't be so hard on the guy.

As far as spam goes—I guess Microsoft Outlook handles it well enough for me. 🙂

slywolf6 said:I don't have any antivirus installed. I guess I just don't need them—for some weird reason, in the four years I've owned this PC, I haven't seen a single spam email or virus!🙏

You wouldn't actually know that, though—since there's nothing for your computer to detect if the viruses are already there. 😉

I haven't messed around with overclocking an A64 yet—but here you can probably find everything you need. Just give it a little scroll.
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
In theory, you can crank it up as high as you want—as long as you have the cooling to back it up.
Check out this. 😉

How much? Of what? Honestly, Steve, nobody really knows. You kind of have to just dive in and see how far you can push it yourself—I guess. Every processor is its own little beast, even if they come from the exact same series. I suppose that goes for pretty much any component, really.

Yeah, the Barton 2500+ is an excellent candidate for overclocking—it can pretty much run as a 3200+ without any issues if you play it right.
Now, if things start getting unstable, you'll probably need to bump up the voltage. Look for "Vcore" in your BIOS and try increasing it by just one step. Just one, though—don't go overboard. Test the system after that. If it’s still acting up, maybe try adding another step to the Vcore.

No, the real issue here is cooling. That heatsink you're using just isn't cutting it. It might claim to support up to a 3800+, but since yours is a 2500+ being pushed past its limits, temperatures are going to spike. If you're serious about overclocking, you'll have to shell out some cash for decent cooling. The bare minimum would be a Zalman7000, but honestly, I'd look into a Big Typhoon, Sonic Tower, Zalman 7700, Thermaltake Volcano 12, or even a Thermaltake Tower112....
What are you guys listening to lately? in Music ·
Lately? I've been listening to a lot of Itd band. Honestly... there's just too much to list, really. Mostly anything that isn't accordion, melodica, or that kind of newly composed musical nonsense—not to mention those guys who call themselves rappers instead of actual poets.

And here I was thinking the forum finally had its act together. First it was users and PMs vanishing—now even the top threads are going haywire... people change, I guess, but this place stays exactly the same. 😁

I mean, what can I say—it seems like this place only puts up with being crude and getting insulted (and mostly just one way, too). I guess that says something about the mods, too.
Now they'll probably hit me with a ban because apparently I'm "trolling and spamming." 🙄

Nobody’s ever actually been banned for having an opinion. 😉

Everest
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
Specs:

CPU: Pentium II Deschutes 400 MHz
MBO: ASUS P2B 1.10 BIOS 1014 (a beta from back in 2002)
RAM: SDRAM 320 PC100 (2x128 + 1x64)
GPU: Riva TNT2 32 MB with a passive heatsink

Since the multiplier is locked at the CPU level—and the motherboard doesn't let me tweak the voltage—I've just been pushing it by bumping the FSB. It’s been running at 412 MHz (4x103) for a few months now. Today I pushed it to 448 MHz (4x112), and so far, so good. I'll probably run some more thorough tests tomorrow.

I tried hitting 532 MHz (4x133), but my 128 MB sticks just wouldn't cooperate. The 64 MB one seems fine, though. Maybe I could try some PC133 or even PC100 with 6-7ns latency, but I don't really want to waste money on that. 448 MHz feels pretty decent enough. 🙂

The only issue was the graphics card getting way too hot—couldn't even touch the heatsink. So, I ended up taping an old tiny fan from a magneto-optical drive onto it, and now it's ice cold. Only downside is that little thing hums and whirs quite a bit.
Topic "The song 'The Times They Are A-Changin'—we'll keep going until it shows us..." is linked to this other, similar thread.

The logs just "vanished"—the carrier was basically acting like its own little kingdom—and I honestly didn't have the energy to go after them (the state) through the courts
Anyway, I put in a request to see the log files since I work in IT, and they just flat-out turned me down
After that, a lawyer friend of mine wrote to them demanding access via a court-appointed expert, but by then the log was gone, even though the bill was still sitting there as "proof"
Basically, they screwed me over without a second thought, and at the end, I had to weigh the risk of a lawsuit—years of fighting and interest rates that I probably couldn't win or afford back then
I ended up paying, and they "generously" let me split it into six installments

Hmm, yeah. The problem is our court system is "fast," too. And even if the amount isn't huge, it's just not worth the fight. Though, personally, I wouldn't have paid. No logs, no money. They have to prove you actually made those calls somehow, right? At least in court.
Man, at this rate, their employees could be calling anyone in the world and making sex calls, then pinning it on us. We really ought to look into consumer protection laws and other stuff related to this kind of thing.

Though, I swear, I occasionally see numbers on my bill that nobody in my house ever called. It happens. Like some random fishing club... but it's always just one or two calls a month, lasting maybe a minute or two. So it's not a massive amount.

I’m not entirely sure how much wiggle room there is to avoid logging these things—it's tricky. Then again, how does it even make sense to bill you for a call that isn't even showing up in the logs? I’m no expert, but I assume AT&T isn't just letting their employees run wild without any oversight or anything.
