...which means grabbing some Baguazhang techniques for those circular patterns—you know, the five elements style—and then maybe some Xing Yi Quan for the linear stuff...
...I've already got plenty of Kung Fu in my hands and feet, now I just need the footwork...
...I think once I have that, the debate is over...

I’m looking to get back into martial arts and I've narrowed it down to these two options. I used to train Wing Chun, but now I want something a bit more intense for conditioning. :-)

Can anyone recommend some good clubs? Also, which one of these two is actually better?

Thanks.

...if you want to master a movement—if you want to become the embodiment of motion, reacting spontaneously at any given second—then you have to grind through the training...
...my personal advice? Find a martial art that actually has a beginning, a middle, and an end...
...Wing Chun is solid; it's basically studying combat down to your raw instinct...
...you've got your forms. Have someone show them to you, then just hammer them out. You don't even need a partner. Just drill the forms, work on your stances, wall pushes, footwork, jumping, balancing on one leg...
...you need to train for ten years. After that, you're practically invincible...
...in those ten years, you won't just feel the spirits of all the masters; if you haven't mastered the Buddha Palm, the Eight Hands technique, the Mantis style, and all those other things you've heard about, then you're just a fool who isn't serious about martial arts.

capiscone said:It’s a decent thought. But the real trick is making that daily grind a permanent habit. If I take even a short break, getting back into the groove takes way too much effort...
Either way, doing 30 minutes a day—and I mean every single day—does wonders for building discipline. It'll probably sharpen your skills, too.

...30 minutes sounds fine for now; but are we talking about a full-blown workout during those 30 minutes or what???...

...let's say I can't make it to the gym two or three times a week; let's even say I can barely swing by the gym twice or three times a month; then let's say I can only show up to the gym a couple of times a year...should I still be hitting 30 minutes a day, or should that time be scaled up...

urbanotter5 said:I thought the question was about how often you train. Don't tell me we're pivoting back to street effectiveness again.

I train for those old-school "discipline comes from within" reasons. Wax on, wax off.

Twice a week at the gym, plus daily conditioning and drills at home. And yeah, I hit the club on weekends, obviously.

...noooo, I wasn't trying to change the subject, I was just actually answering the question...

...Look, anyone can defend themselves on a street corner without knowing a single martial arts move. You just need some grit and heart, and that’s really it...
...Now, when you start training, you get this little ego boost. You feel like you actually possess some kind of specialized power or an edge because you know how to fight. It gives you this false sense of security, almost like you're carrying a weapon...but eventually, that illusion shatters at light speed. It completely evaporates. In the end, once you've seen enough, you realize that having those skills doesn't change the fundamental reality of a confrontation...
...which basically means you wind up right back where you started...

Hey! I'm definitely down to get into this discussion...
...so let's get the ball rolling;
-to be honest, I hit the gym for two hours every other day. Sometimes I'll go on a streak for a few days straight, but I can't sustain it because my body eventually demands a break. In the end, it mostly boils down to an every-other-day routine...
...that 30-minute window felt way too short to me. I could never bring myself to clear my schedule just for 30 minutes of work...but I'll leave that out there for now.

...In any legitimate field of study, you’ve got the stuff they hand down to students, the fluff used to present the subject, and then there's the actual core—the backbone of the discipline.
That core... honestly, it's the only part worth a damn about the whole subject... no matter what field we're talking about... or what that core happens to be!!!

...I haven't watched the whole thing yet... but... there’s a lot of performative choreography going on. You can tell they’ve put in the work; they're catching those tight windows of relaxation and just flowing right past the force. Like I said before, I'm only skimming this, so it might just be the end of the technique, but we'll see.

...hey guys, if you check out systemwork, they teach more than just basic techniques. You can actually learn how to execute those moves from the Crown... you know, that stuff where you just catch someone completely off guard with a sudden strike!!!👍
