Dealing with the teenage years is a nightmare in Students & Teens ·
mellowskipper said:So, I found a lighter in my daughter's things yesterday—it just sort of spilled out when I was looking through her stuff. It didn't even smell like cigarettes, which is a relief, I suppose. She just looked at me like I was being dramatic and said that everyone has lighters and it’s totally normal. I mean, seriously? Why on earth would a seven-year-old be carrying around a lighter?
That whole phase where kids are obsessed with playing with matches or fire seems to have passed for her long ago, so I'm honestly just stumped...

My girl is in eighth grade and she’s obsessed with scented candles. I’m constantly confiscating them, but she just buys more.
Well, she can light them herself then...
Maybe that's just how it is. 🤷
I told her straight up: one day you're going to burn the house down. ☕

I truly hope yours turns out smarter than that. That's my honest take on your situation. And I say that as a smoker.

If it's okay to brag a little on this thread, I will.😁
I am incredibly proud of my daughter.
She started tutoring for math, chemistry, and physics, and she actually started caring about her books. She fixed everything. We've seen grades in those subjects—math and its related 😁—drop like stones for eight years, but never like this. I'm genuinely happy.😍

Plus, she’s finally starting to open up and talk to me again.
We’re even planning a little outing this weekend.
Keep your fingers crossed that it stays this way.👍
People who stare at you in Psychology ·
To doesn't look like intelligence to me. It looks like the exact opposite. 🤷
It's just mindless staring. Like some kind of deer in headlights.

Common courtesy dictates you look someone in the eye when you talk. Just staring blankly at someone for no reason is pathological.

I couldn't care less what’s going on inside that person's head or if they're even capable of thought. If they have something to say, they should just say it. I don't have the energy to analyze what a specific look might mean. I simply don't care.
If they're just staring without saying anything, it's creepy. I'm not wasting any more time on it.
Ex-partners (drugs, cheating, bad influences) in Psychology & Therapy ·
All I see is one endless loop of nonsense, over and over again.
You weren't involved with that "nuisance," you were with your wonderful boyfriend. If he didn't want to hang out with her and her guy, he wouldn't have gone. If he didn't like what she was doing, he wouldn't be doing it.
Unless, of course, we're talking about someone with special needs who lacks basic decision-making skills. In that case, I'll buy this whole story about the villainous nuisance and her boyfriend.

Luckily, I stumbled upon some great music there too—it’s such a chill series 😂

My daughter watched it too. Now she's just waiting for the next season.☕

If other kids are obsessed with it, they’re probably fine.🤣

Honestly, watching kids these days—and yeah, I know I sound old-fashioned😁—I just feel bad for them.
They can't focus in school, and they don't even know how to hang out properly.
It's just mindless scrolling through TikTok and endless videos.
Basically, if you want to pass the time, you have to stare at a tablet.

Being young today is a waste of time.

I honestly thought they were into Billie Eilish, but this track is such a vibe 😁
just play them "She Past Away" or "Boy Harsher" and you'll definitely be cooler than her 😂

Honestly, I don't know anything about this stuff. Aside from Billie Eilish, I'm clueless...🤣
I guess I really am old school.😁

mellowskipper said:As for the music, I won't even go there. Sure, she knows all the hits from the Top 40 stations, but then she’ll pull up some stuff on YouTube in Japanese or Russian. It’s terrible, really. Though, I suppose at least it isn't country music.
And she’s always watching anime or reading manga. I still don't quite get it—I don't understand the appeal or what the themes are actually about. I know it can get a little freaky sometimes.

Sent from my iPhone 11 using Reddit

Well, my wife loves anime and manga too! I actually bought her two manga volumes for her birthday. She finished them already, so we're looking for more.
I'm just happy she's reading something. Trying to get her to pick up a book otherwise is pure science fiction.
That seems to be the trend lately.🤔

I know she watched that recent anime series about those guys on skateboards, so we ended up having to buy a skateboard.😵
Before that, it was all about Hunter x hunter.

I'm actually dying to know what kind of music we're talking about, so if anyone has a link, please send it over 🙂.

Here's a link based on some lyrics I managed to remember. I can Google the rest later.☕

I appreciate that she isn't into that mainstream pop trash or dressing in those tiny skirts. She actually has her own style, I'll give her that.
But look, I'm an old-school club rat 🤣. I just want something with a beat that lets me move. This stuff doesn't work for me.😁

We'll all get through this phase eventually...

Consider me a new member of the club.😁
My daughter just hit thirteen. We’re all exhausting and difficult now. I’ve even gone full old-school.🙄

She listens to music that's an absolute disaster. It sounds like a funeral procession. I can't even put a genre to it. I used to think there wasn't a song out there I couldn't stand, but apparently, I was wrong.☕

Everything she wears is oversized; if it isn't baggy, she won't touch it.
She spends her life glued to TikTok, acting like she hates the entire world.
And don't expect any affection. No hugs, no kisses—you can barely even touch her without getting a glare.

In short...

hollowfox3 said:They’re all online now, probably catching wind from the news sites that the whole mandatory quarantine system was a total wash. Now, the official word is basically just "do whatever you want" and look out for yourselves—which, let’s be honest, is just code for "good luck."

A friend of mine didn't even get a call, so she went ahead and reached out herself to get logged into the system... and yeah, she basically just volunteered for a headache. Now she's stuck sitting through a long stretch of isolation because of it...

Honestly, I don't see the point in testing unless you actually have symptoms or some specific reason to need it. Especially when you have to shell out your own cash for it.

The person I'm talking about actually *did* get a call, and they were told the rest of the household didn't need to isolate. That's the issue here.

And this person doesn't have any symptoms at all. No fever, nothing. She was tested for a completely different reason—she needs surgery.

Now she’s tested positive, feels fine, and who’s to say the people living with her aren't also positive without knowing it?
They’re walking around spreading it to people who might actually die from it.
They go to work and live their lives like everything is normal, all while sharing a house with someone who is positive. It makes zero sense.

That’s why the numbers look the way they do. It isn't just because people are careless; it's because the public health officials are being negligent.

nimbleranger17 said:Honestly, we’re looking at another complete absurdity here. If you ask me, the absolute height of lunacy is this whole concept of self-isolation. Since the dawn of the modern era, true isolation hasn't really been a thing in any functional society.

I mean, let’s just walk through the logic for a second—suppose every single person in a household decides to just lock themselves away; how on earth are they supposed to survive for two weeks? Who’s going to run to the local Whole Foods or the corner bodega? Not everyone is blessed with a massive extended family standing by ready to act as a personal delivery service for groceries.

But look, I’ve been saying it since day one: this entire policy of isolation needs to be scrapped immediately.

In five or six years, the rest of the world is going to be laughing their heads off at how ridiculous this whole tool turned out to be.

Look, whether isolation is stupid or not is beside the point. If they’re going to mandate it, they should apply it to people who are actually in close contact, not some neighbor you just brushed past in an apartment hallway.

And we’re talking about younger people here. They live online. They can have groceries delivered to their doorstep without leaving the house. The real issue is that they’re living with someone who tested positive, yet they’re still out walking around. Nobody is getting tested systematically. Nothing.🤷

Alex Roberts4 said:But seriously, why even tell the doctor? No, I’m actually asking. If we followed that logic, everyone would be getting tested constantly because people are sneezing everywhere. Here’s a different take for you: A coworker's husband just tested positive. At home, nobody was contacted or told to isolate, even though at least four people were in close contact with him—working side-by-side, sitting together, all that. Luckily, my husband hadn't seen that guy in at least a week. It really feels like they've loosened up the rules on contact tracing...
Did they ask you any follow-up questions?

I’ve been scrolling through these threads to see if anyone else has noticed this pattern, and here we go. 😁
A few days ago, someone tested positive. They live with three other people in the same household, and yet, absolutely no one is required to isolate.
They’re living under the same roof and nothing happens. Where is the "close contact" in that equation?
The logic is nonexistent, but there it is...☕

silentraven6 said:I honestly don't get why everyone's so obsessed with knowing who's involved or why someone would choose to put things on hold... and more importantly, how does any of this actually impact a single person on an individual level?

People come here looking for actual advice, not a lecture or a moral high ground.

I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
If we don't agree, that doesn't mean we have to start a fight.

I laid out my situation. Based on the criteria being discussed here, I could have easily asked for an extension.
So, we have a kid born right on the border back in March who can't write, can't read, and barely even knows how to draw.

The experts gave her the green light. She’s ready. So, I signed her up.
It was honestly a little unnerving. She didn't have the slightest clue what she was talking about.
She handled everything without breaking a sweat. No issues at all.
So, they were right. That doesn't mean they're infallible, obviously.

I gave my two cents. Maybe it’s time we actually start listening to the people who actually know what they're talking about.
I have no intention of supporting any more delays just to serve someone's personal comfort or to extend this little "game" for another year.
Of course, she won't stop talking about school. Kids just can't help themselves when they're in play mode.
Look, I have my own take on this. That doesn't mean I have anything against people who decide to delay school on their own terms.

Maybe there are some moms here feeling anxious about how their kids will fare in school. If you're worried, take a look at the kids who started with zero prior knowledge. They jumped right in, found their footing, and turned out just fine. It all worked out perfectly.
Maybe they'll finally decide to stop pushing back the start of the school year.
Hello.
School closures/delays? in Students & Teens ·
My child was born right at the end of March.
To be honest, I don't even remember how all the early milestones unfolded.
She wasn't reading or writing yet, and she had zero interest in drawing either... I didn't push her.
She didn't attend daycare, either.

We went in for the evaluations, and the professionals said she was ready for school.
I didn't ask for a deferral. I don't know. It just never crossed my mind.
She learned everything she needed to in class and ended up on the honor roll.
It proves that being ahead on reading, writing, or drawing isn't the deciding factor.

In my view, if the experts—doctors, psychologists, and so on—recommend holding a child back, you should listen to them.
For my own reasons, I don't quite get the hesitation...
Kids still play. Even once they start school, they'll have plenty of time to make friends.
Grading Freshmen in Students & Teens ·
I’m the mother of a first grader who never went to preschool and couldn't read or write before starting elementary school.
She simply had zero interest, and I wasn't about to force it.
She eventually picked everything up on her own. Her teacher looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned she arrived with no prior skills.
I don't really get what people mean when they say a child can handle homework entirely by themselves.
My daughter writes her own, but I check everything, point out mistakes, and explain concepts whenever necessary.
We study for tests together because kids that age aren't capable of knowing how to study effectively on their own.
In my view, grades aren't what matters.
But grades exist, and there's no way around that.
If parents or the child aren't happy with the report card, then they need to put in more practice and work.
You just can't expect a kid that small to sit there and learn everything independently.
