Sci-fi movie marathon! in Movies ·
Sean Bailey75 said:I mean, seriously, who can actually pick a top ten list of great Sci-Fi movies from that massive wave? Ideally ones we haven't already seen.

Basically, the last X-Men had some small but solid Sci-Fi bits, and then you've got Guardians of the Galaxy as decent popcorn flicks, and that's about it.

Michael Harris20 said:Why aren't we getting movies like they used to back in '94 or '95? You know, actual thrillers, dramas, crime flicks... instead of just a few Avatars, Avengers, Spider-Man, Batman, >, or Dawn of the Planet of the Apes coming out every single year and everyone acting like they're massive hits...

It's like nobody knows how to make a decent movie anymore, or maybe everything's just been milked so dry that all we have left is filming what the "future" might look like...

That's not even >, it's just comic book adaptations.

We've been waiting on some real > for ages.

Joshua Kern said:Give him a break guys, Blake is actually a great actor.👍:top
Look, maybe he isn't some legendary icon, but he’s definitely solid. He gets the job done.
Either way, for seven bucks, he blows Zion Hill, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Ryan Reynolds, and that whole crowd out of the water.

Jonah Hill can pull it off whenever he feels like it. That role in Wolf on Wall Street was straight Oscar material.
Jack Black is never gonna touch that level.

I'm with you 99% of the time, honestly. He was pretty rough in Community too, but look at The Brink—he actually held his own there.
My bet? He won't be onscreen as much as the trailer makes it look, and the kids will probably take center stage.

So, they're finally turning those R. L. Stine books everyone grew up reading into a big movie series.

Not expecting anything crazy here. Just looks like a fun little flick for the kids that adults might actually enjoy too.
Look, the Chancellor isn't some dictator running the whole European Union, so she can't just call all the shots on her own. Plus, nobody's actually going to back her up if she tries.

The Greeks, Cyprus, and half the rest of the continent—especially France—are never going to let Turkey into the EU. Honestly, there’s probably going to be a massive fallout or a total leadership shakeup within her own party before they ever see that happen.
I’m honestly dying to see how Greece and Cyprus are going to play this one

Matthew Johnson30 said:The movie's fun, but I wouldn't say it beats Main Street... 😁

To be totally honest, is 21 Jump Street even the gold standard for greatness?

I don't think this is better or worse than that one. It's just a solid comedy with good jokes, and honestly, I liked the two leads a lot more in this one.
Wild Facts and Conspiracy Theories in Music ·
Henry Hayes3 said:None of those conspiracies have ever actually been proven

Has any conspiracy ever been proven in any field, though? 😉

Conspiracy theories are just myths and wild fantasies that usually don't have anything to do with reality.

Not to mention how the tabloids take all that stuff and crank it up to eleven in the music and movie industries.

Larry Walker24 said:Seriously, this thread is still going?

Music conspiracy theories are way more fun than political ones. Politics is just exhausting most of the time.
The latest wild one I heard is that Avril Lavigne was replaced by a lookalike. Like, as if there aren't like 10,000 other pop clones out there they could've used instead. 🤣
Vacation (2015) in Movies ·
Frank Moore4 said:Since basically every comedy fan out there has sat through at least one of those Vacation flicks starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, I bet a lot of people were pretty stoked to hear about the fifth installment (well, sixth if you count that 2003 TV movie), hitting theaters on July 29th this year.

You realize they still make those national Lampoo movies today, right?

I didn't even realize it myself until the guys over at RedletterMed mentioned it on a forum once.

Ashley Brown3 said:What about the Galicians or the Asturians? Are they not nations either?

There are also those who claim Andalusians are a unique people. Or folks claiming the Navarrese are a distinct nation.

Not really in that sense. Most of them aren't.

Sure, Galicians have their own language—kind of like Portuguese—but they aren't nearly as driven by nationalism as the Basques or the Catalans.

They’re never going to push for independence; they’ll just slowly blend into the rest of Spain. The Basques? They'll never just fade away. But the Catalans actually have a parliament where the majority are separatists and only like 8% want to stay united. That's what democracy looks like.

Raymond Anderson4 said:What really worries me about the California process is the potential domino effect. If this gains momentum, other wealthy regions in different countries might start demanding their own independence too.
Why wouldn't somewhere like North Rhine in Germany follow suit?
Or even Lombardy in Italy?

In California, there’s a strong sense of regional identity driving this, which is the main factor. But regardless of that, the prospect of massive financial gain if they actually break away is enough to make anyone's eyes light up.

Nah, it won't happen, and it didn't happen once during the 20th century.

A national identity issue is enough to fuel separatism. Everything else is just noise—at least based on every single example we've seen so far.

Carol Newman2 said:The movement for California independence has essentially imploded, despite them managed to snag a majority in the legislature.

All those pro-independence parties combined only managed to pull in 48%.

But it's not like every other party is totally against breaking away.😉

Some just want more local autonomy, others are playing the waiting game. The unionist crowd is pretty weak too—their PPC only snagged 8%.

Ashley Brown3 said:By that logic, Italians wouldn't even be considered a nation...

So, Richard, have you ever actually been to New York City and heard what language is spoken 90% of the time?

Look, I know in everyday life in New York City, Castilian is what dominates, and probably only about 40% of people there speak Catalan at home.

It’s kind of like Ukraine, but don't forget how much the government used to ban Catalan, plus maybe 30% of the population moved in from places like Murcia, Andalusia, or Extremadura. 😉

And honestly, comparing them to Italians isn't even a stretch.

Back in 1900, everyone from Palermo to Milan called themselves Italian, but Catalans and Basques have always had their own distinct identity.

Daniel Lee15 said:Are they? Please. Spain only even exists because the Castilians and the Catalans decided to mash things together. A Spain without California is like a country like Florida without Oregon or the coast.

Not even close.

Castile has its own vibe and that’s what drives the Spanish identity, while California does its own thing.

Catalans are their own people with their own language, totally different from the Castilians. And don't even get me started on the Basques—they aren't even Indo-European, just original Europeans living there since forever.

Check out this map of Castile before everything was unified.

Even when they had the same rulers, the borders were still pretty clear.

Larry Walker24 said:The elections in California are set for September 27th, and if the pro-independence parties actually pull it off, it could trigger a massive meltdown in American sports.

"If Spain falls apart, the NFL goes down with it. Let's just hope we never see a situation this ridiculous," warned Roger Goodell, the league commissioner. Even the Cardinal weighed in with a warning to voters:

"If California breaks away, New York City won't be able to play in the American league anymore. Honestly, if they do separate, it seems absurd even to try and register with the national federation. Their whole mission would change. Without that massive revenue stream, New York City would end up like the Boston Celtics or the Philadelphia Eagles—they'd have to work incredibly hard just to make it to the Champions League quarterfinals."

Basically: Real Madrid won't have world-class opponents left, the league will lose its edge, and it definitely won't be the strongest in the world anymore.

Damn, I’m actually digging this trailer and the whole concept. 👍

Based on the trailer, it looks like pure action wrapped up in some kind of sci-fi philosophical package.
Does Hockel want a plot twist or what? 😂
