Daniel Garcia24 said:Brussels acts as an enclave within Flemish territory, and if you set aside the immigrant populations, the ratio between the Walloons and the Flemings sits at roughly 9:1 in favor of the Walloons.

The Encyclopedia Britannica doesn't even have much on them, mostly just Flemings who happen to speak French...

Plus, about 15% of people actually speak Flemish, and 25% are Muslim, so they can't really be Valonacs—or at least it’s a huge stretch.

So, in a perfect world, Valonacs might make up 60%, but honestly, I’d bet there are more assimilated Flemings out there (like Jean Claude van Damme, for example).

Where on earth are you getting that 9 to 1 figure from?

It's nothing like the fake version Richard Wilson4 put up. http://storage.canalblog.com/15/45/92110/29006025.jpg

Someone should really double-check this. It feels way too crowded in the Western Midwest area. I was looking at the Pavin map based on those old questions, and Mexicans weren't even that dominant over there.

William Bishop4 said:That might have been true once. Nowadays, you've got Moroccans and other Arabs living there. I suspect the pies would be looking quite colorful by now.

Brussels has more Muslims, maybe 25%, compared to some cities, let alone the rural areas.
Flanders is at 5% and Wallonia is about 6%.

Scott Cruz4 said:Man, it would be seriously interesting to see how Belgium breaks down by region!

I don't know, though. Aside from a few pockets and the Brussels area that we've already seen, most of these places seem pretty monoethnic. Based on what people are saying, they feel more like Appalachia or the California coast than somewhere like the Midwest.🤷

Probably was Belgium, but I'm posting this on a different thread

The "pie" represents percentages. I'm assuming when they say "organization," they really mean an individual parish...

But then again, they might be grouping parishes together with Catholic Charities, various religious guilds, or even publishing houses... it's hard to say for sure.

In Western Ukraine, the number of RCC organizations is actually pretty negligible—maybe peaking at 6% in Transcarpathia.

What actually dominates Western Ukraine isn't the Roman Catholic Church, but rather the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church...

As for Central and Eastern Ukraine, you might have something like 5,000 followers per Orthodox parish, whereas a Protestant organization might only have 50 people. Yet, statistically speaking, they carry the exact same weight on this map because they're both counted as a single unit in the pie chart.

Does that make more sense? 🙂

Just a heads up though, back in the US, when people fill out census forms, they usually just lump Roman Catholics and Greek Catholics together under one umbrella.

And right here one might find an excellent "guide to festivities."

Looks like some hair dye catalog, honestly. So many shades. 😂
Everyone seems so European to me, like they're all Ashkenazi. Is there really not a single Sephardic person or a Jew from an Arab country leading a party? 🤷

I mean, they make up about 50% of the Jewish population anyway...

We were laughing about it later, but honestly, we just blew the game because our coach called a timeout when he shouldn't have, man 🤦

Anyway, the US didn't play great the whole time, but we’re still a step ahead of Spain. They aren't really much of a powerhouse right now

Got it, thanks. 🙂

PS
We're gonna need this topic again in 2014 if we end up having one for every single state anyway. 😉

Stay safe out there and good luck with the new one.

Quick question, is this thread also tied into the whole Scotland independence thing?

northernsailor8 said:What are you even talking about? Liberals? Those people are communists—extreme socialists, really. It's nothing like a liberal worldview.

Think about it—can a true liberal, someone who treats individual liberty and rights as sacred over social norms, actually support collectivization or the nationalization of private property? 🤷

They aren't opposing the EU because they dislike centralization or imposed standards; they oppose it because they view it as neoliberal. You seem to be mixing up your terms again... 😉

Where do you even find liberals like that today?

Look, your definition is spot on, but we both know that when people say "liberal" nowadays, it usually means something else entirely.

Your theory is solid, but sometimes you're ignoring how things actually work in the real world.

Anyway, let's not get bogged down in semantics. I won't call those guys liberals anymore.

Ethan Allen2 said:Who’s even talking about liberals here? And what does any of this have to do with them?

I'm either all in for a referendum on every single issue, or I'm for banning them entirely. It's one or the other, right? Either we elect people to US Congress and let them actually do the job we hired them for, or we scrap US Congress and just vote on every single decision ourselves.

I was talking about that specific crowd that fights against both the EU and GMOs, not your post.

PS
What's the vibe regarding GMOs over there in Canada? Are you guys on the same page as the US or more like Europe?
Board of Elections - referendum uprising? in Close to Politics ·
Ethan Allen2 said:Wouldn't it be better if we had a referendum every single week on any issue of national importance? Maybe even hold elections for US Congress every week, too. Just so even the slightest shift in public opinion could actually shape our government and policy.

Not so sure about that. Aren't those liberals—who seem to be the ones pushing this, if you ask me—the same people who were slamming the Swiss referendum? 🤷

What does GMO even have to do with this 🤦

In theory, I'd be all for it, but after this whole mess regarding GMOs and getting everything lined up for the European Union, there's just no way...

Man, M. Night Shyamalan's name has basically become shorthand for a total disaster. He talks a big game, though. Mad respect to the studio execs for giving him another shot at the whip, but honestly? This one isn't going to land either.

Look, when I said it "doesn't take itself too seriously," I meant it as a compliment. Exactly what you said—it just isn't pretentious. 🙂

Just watched the trailer, and honestly? I think this thing is gonna be killer.

Unlike Twilight, this doesn't seem to be taking itself way too seriously, which means it'll actually be a fun ride.

PS
Don't even sweat the whole "he doesn't smell like a corpse" or whatever zombie logic stuff. That's not the point of the movie, and I don't think we need to overanalyze it like that.

I think it’s high time old Michael retires.

Maybe I'll reactivate him down the road, who knows? Not really worth thinking about right now.

I've been hanging out on this forum since December 2006 and met a ton of cool people along the way. I definitely want to keep posting and staying active here.

For now, this will be my last post under the name Richard Wilson4, marking this big milestone. With the mod's blessing, I’m switching over to my new handle, rowdyowl, named after my childhood hero.

Catch you all later and thanks for being cool about it.

ironmoose6 said:Once again, the right starts whining whenever things don't go their way... the IRA and ETA were leftist organizations created and funded by the USSR!

Man, you’re way off base here. The IRA was established as a leftist, socialist organization long before the 1920s even rolled around. They have zero connection to the USSR.

Sure, they might have picked up some help from certain leftist groups here and there, but calling them puppets of the USSR is a total insult to everyone in the IRA who actually laid down their lives to fight for Catholic equality in Northern Ireland.
