For now, I think I’m gonna stick with Wing Chun. I’ve been training my self-defense based on Wing Chun principles and, honestly, I’m pretty happy with how it's going. But man, Krav Maga? That’s definitely still on my bucket list.🙂

Should we even be looking for it?

I don't get it... what kind of "self-defense" is even Wing Chun?

Ugh, gross. All of it.

Stop messing around with those mass gainers

Look, Steve, he’s the old pro here...

You can find them at your local gym or in the supplement aisle at Target. Just Google it.

The KM seminar happened a few weeks back

@Brandon Price6

Better to just go watch them all train first, then decide... hehehe

I was thinking—maybe I’ll hit the gym on the side too, just to balance things out...
BTW, thanks for the tip about Bauer's; looks like I might actually head over there. I just need to double-check if I can make the trek from school in under 50 minutes—I think I can, though.

Of course your conditioning will improve, but you should definitely throw in some extra exercises at home or at the gym...

James Garcia6 said:I mean, I get it, but I just can't make it to training on time! It’s driving me crazy—everything is so close, yet it feels worlds away! 😁 My school is incredibly strict about this stuff; they wouldn't even let me slip out an hour early just to catch my session. They basically only grant permission if you're actually sick or something like that.

Then just go to that other one over on Main Street. It starts at 8.

James Garcia6 said:I’ve got a quick question for you all. First, some context—I’m 16 years old, about 6 feet tall, and weighing roughly 175 lbs. I really want to start training Krav Maga, but I keep hearing from everywhere that I shouldn't start until I hit 18. My second choice would be Wing Chun. Can anyone recommend a club I could actually get to from the suburbs—somewhere near a place like Naperville or maybe closer to the city depending on the timing? Since I’m stuck in school during the afternoons, I don't get out until around 7:10 PM, so I’m wondering if there are any Wing Chun clubs with late sessions I could realistically make it to! 😁
Basically, my goal is to pick up a solid martial art, drop a little weight, and build up some muscle mass while I'm at it. I’m totally open to other suggestions, though—it doesn't strictly have to be Wing Chun. I just don't want to end up at some gym where they just beat the hell out of me every single session without actually teaching me anything useful.

BTW, sorry about the red text—I just wanted to make sure my question didn't get lost in the shuffle! 😁

There's Wing Chun over in the metro area near the city center.

Old man...😂

Just look at that...
Where can I find teams from different years?
31 isn't even old... just get your cardio up...

You won't be able to train Krav Maga for another five years at this rate...

Go to Dennis Survival instead, they take people under 18...
Or try Jiu Jitsu, it's at the same spot as Dennis.

Daniel Baker49 said:Also, about muscle regeneration and not losing mass. Basically, I need something that won't make me gain weight, but when I'm dropping fat, I don't want my muscle to go with it.

Protein equals protein.

Helicopter...

Just grab a whey shake with some glucose after your workout.

placidbison20 said:If you head to training sessions with Daniel Garcia, you're in good hands.🙂

You'll be fine with the others, too.

Post here on the forum once you start. If any "situations" pop up, we can talk them through.

Regardless, you shouldn't be taking much beatings or getting injured when you're just starting out. That's a sign the coach has zero control over the class.

After a while, it becomes a personal choice how intense and realistic you want your training to be, and by extension, how much contact you're willing to take.🙂

Bruises, scrapes, minor injuries... that's just part of the game at every session.
And if you're a guy, dealing with that specific soreness in your junk and involuntary twitching while riding the subway...😁

placidbison20 said:The upfront cost isn't massive. You'll need a mouthguard, chest protector, and maybe some gloves.

Krav Maga is one of those skills you can pick up "easier and faster," but take that with a grain of salt.

Without real work, you won't see progress anywhere.

NYC prices are around $83 per month. There are two main clubs, and both are solid.

@ Daniel Garcia: give us some details on those clubs...

Wrestling shoes - at least a basic pair$100(not urgent, but you'll want them eventually)

$83Pavilion 25, Tuesdays and Thursdays

$100Pavilion 6 has more time slots available

Nah, probably won't be much point heading to training right now... everyone's basically on summer break
