Look, let's be clear about one thing here: this definitely isn't meant for New Year's. I guess we should probably manage our expectations accordingly, right? I suppose this one's just my little way of treating myself to something sweet.
Good grief, the sheer amount of hate directed at burek is staggering. Honestly, if you can't stand it, just skip the thread and move on. Let's keep the peace. I don't quite get why everyone is lashing out at something that millions of people around the world absolutely adore. Just to clarify my point—if we're being technical, I suppose a schnitzel is just another variation of a burek, so there.
Honestly, if I could figure out how to get everything running on Discord, I’m pretty sure anyone can do it. I mean, Bazz just sent me a link, so I clicked it, followed some instructions, and that was basically the whole process. By the end of it, I even managed to mess around with the settings and adjust my display size and stuff like that.
Duco, I mean, it’s just Wikipedia.😍 If you really want a heated debate, maybe try talking to some Italian food critic or a grandmother from the Midwest. Man, once those types start lecturing you...🤦
Richard Sanders7, what’s the word on your end? Anything interesting happening in your neck of the woods? I mean, I just had some lamb and a cold beer, and honestly, life feels alright for a moment.
Richard Sanders7, it seems like everyone has migrated over to Discord except for our friend 🤣 . Maybe you should try logging back in and actually giving those community guidelines a quick read? 🙂 I mean, I guess it’s possible you just clicked the wrong button or something by mistake.
Casey Thomas, this is exactly what I consider the gold standard. Honestly, whenever someone brings up the Turkish film league, this is the first thing that pops into my head. Don't get me wrong, I’ve watched the comedies too. But those are really just my "unwind after a long day" movies. I wouldn't go so far as to call them life-changing or anything. The films I mentioned earlier? They actually left an impression on me. A deep one. I find myself thinking about them quite often. They’re true stories about life—or at least stories that force you to reflect on how you live yours. There’s humor in them, sure, but it’s that subtle, gentle kind of wit. Then you have the heavy scenes, too, but everything is wrapped up so thoughtfully. I could probably list a bunch of other titles, but let's face it, nobody here has seen them. And since there aren't even any English subtitles available, there’s really no point in me listing them. For instance, any film starring Nejat Isler or Timucin Esen. Most of those are genuinely high-quality pieces, but I suppose they aren't exactly "blockbuster" material for the general public.
Casey Thomas, I’ve honestly watched way too many movies to even attempt making a definitive list and since ninety percent of them aren't even available on Amazon I really don't know how to approach this But, just off the top of my head, here is a quick rundown. You should be able to find these either on Amazon or via some groups over on Facebook 1. Gonul Yarasi - This was my very first foray into Turkish cinema, and I have such a soft spot for it. You can find it with Russian or English subtitles, but I don't think an American translation exists yet. 2. Babam ve oglum, starring Fikret Kuskan and Chetan Tekindor. It’s actually been ranked among the top hundred films in the world, which is wild. 3. Dedemin insanlari - Amazon actually has a translation for this one. 4. Ikimizin yerine - There's a version on Amazon translated by the dazzling team. Personally, I adore this one because of Zerrin Tekindor and my absolute favorite, Nejat Isler. 5. 5. Mucize - Available on Amazon. 6. Love loves coincidences, both parts. They're on Netflix and also on Amazon. So, yeah, that’s just what I could pull together right now. I have hundreds more in my head, but these are the ones that come to mind when I think about Turkish films They're the ones that always hit home first.
Right now, that link you sent over from Joshua Smith19 is basically undergoing some major reconstruction. So, yeah... it’s pretty much useless at the moment.
Joshua Smith19, you might as well just toss that list straight into the trash because ninety percent of it is absolute garbage Hollywood churns out millions of movies every single year and maybe one in a thousand is actually worth your time trust me on this. In the States, those foreign soaps flooded the market right after the recession hit and honestly, they were total bottom-of-the-barrel junk—mostly just cheap, low-budget melodrama. It wasn't until much later that they started producing stuff with actual prestige and decent production value though, historically, those studios were notorious for having incredibly low budgets. You’d be better off heading over to an Amazon group on Facebook and grabbing their curated lists or checking out some other local community groups there. They actually put together useful lists with direct links to where you can watch everything. Wikipedia just gives you a dry list without any links to where you can actually find a subtitled version.
The chat is getting flooded with people deleting threads and the post counts aren't even tracking correctly anymore plus, I bet the trolls are going to start crashing this place too I honestly don't know why you didn't just ask Witch to pin a thread about Hollywood hits at the top though, if you think about it, we could probably have a dedicated thread for movies in general too it’s pretty simple—just ask the moderator over there and you're set because, let's be real, this specific thread is just not working as a chat topic. There used to be a thread for Hollywood films in the chat, but they went ahead and locked it down which felt completely pointless, if you ask me.
Joshua Smith19, why on earth are you bringing this up in the chat? Why isn't this posted in the TV series section instead? And honestly, I think we should probably reopen the Hollywood thread first. It would give people a chance to actually get acquainted with the movies, since, let's face it, not many forum members have really dove into the film selection lately. Plus, putting a topic like this here in the chat feels a bit misplaced, I guess.
I honestly don't understand why some people get so worked up when Americans call a meat pie just a meat pie rather than using some specific regional label it’s not like we Americans have an issue with how folks in the South might call a certain soup something different or how someone might refer to a spoon as a utensil or a train as a locomotive or even calling a house a home
As far as I'm concerned, a savory meat pie is a meat pie, plain and simple if it's filled with cheese, let's just call it a cheese pie and if it's got fruit, it's an apple pie that's really all there is to it.
Don't mention it. I just wanted to add one little thing—if you really want to do this right, you need to use shredded sauerkraut. I'm not talking about some whole head of cabbage that’s been sitting in brine; I mean that finely shredded, tangy stuff. It just makes a world of difference, I guess.
