Everything you need for a Midwest wedding in Weddings ·
Jeffrey Walker3 said:Hey everyone! 🙂

Just one quick question to kick things off 😁

Does anyone happen to know how far in advance venues in Des Moines and the surrounding areas get booked up? Like, how early should I be looking to reserve a spot, and if we showed up right now, which dates would probably already be slammed?

It gets incredibly busy in the Midwest. If you don't have a specific plan yet, you might find something for this year, but typically these places are booked out a year or even eighteen months in advance.

I’m not foolish enough to have made the trip from Indianapolis to Vinkovci without receiving glowing recommendations first... I saw his work personally, and I like what he does. A man wouldn't stay in business if he wasn't actually good at his job...

One person asks about the cost, while another shares their opinion. Everyone is entitled to both. Personally, I know nothing about their process. I just remember paying $3,000 for a few DVDs—no idea how much footage was actually on them. It’s the same with those old wedding videos and photo keepsakes from when we were kids. An album with 400 photos, maybe 25 large prints, a few duplicates, and some files on a DVD. I don't recall the rest. 😉🙂

Though, I have to admit, I'm feeling a little skeptical. Ten months is a long wait, and I'm worried the weather might turn cold by then. Everyone keeps telling me it's actually the perfect time because you avoid those brutal summer heatwaves without hitting the freezing temperatures, so... yeah...🤷 But I suppose the big decision is made. Now I just need a photographer. I'm thinking about calling a guy over at Studio 69 in Small Town, USA this coming Monday to see if he's available..

We tied the knot on October 3rd last year. The weather was perfect. Warm and sunny without being oppressive—around 70 degrees. October is a solid choice.👍

It is time to make a decision and place that order. The good ones disappear instantly. 🙂

Casey Hernandez21 said:thanks Tim. They told me back in Russia that they were $22, but my mom insisted on trying something else. Honestly, I think I'll just stick with Beam; I really don't feel like driving all the way to a city like Chicago 😉

The pastries from Main Street are superior. At every wedding I've attended where they served them, the platters were cleared within thirty minutes. They disappear instantly. It isn't just about paying $22/kg; when you see a tray holding 36 pieces weighing over 1.2 kg, you realize the value. 🙂

Daniel Turner7 said:That's exactly what I was afraid of. The hotel manager gave us such a great pitch that we actually thought about booking it. Especially since it's a hotel, we assumed it would be a well-oiled machine with seasoned chefs and professional servers who wouldn't dare mess up the food.
Regarding the food, she told us we'd get about 25 ounces of meat per person on the main course (pork and lamb). That sounds okay to me if it's a mix of both, meaning about half a pound each. I forgot to ask if that was split. But based on your story, it sounds like that's 25 ounces total, and I bet that's raw weight, so once it's cooked, it'll be even less... I don't know, we'll have to think about it a bit longer...

I would also suggest you reconsider. You certainly don't want to spend your evening wondering if everyone actually got enough to eat...
unless you plan on being incredibly pedantic with the contract..

We’re looking at a wedding crowd of about 200 to 220 people, so we don’t really need those massive, cavernous banquet halls you see in some of the bigger cities.

We actually swung by the other day to check it out while they were hosting another wedding—there were maybe 250 people there—and honestly, I liked the vibe. Even with all those pillars scattered around the room, it didn't feel too bad.

I’d love to get some real reviews. How’s the food situation? Do they keep the buffets pretty well-stocked? Also, is the alcohol legit, or is it all cheap stuff? And most importantly, how are the bathrooms during the peak of the party? Like, do they actually stay clean and keep the paper towels stocked, or is it a disaster zone?
What’s the staff like? Are they proactive and actually walking the floor checking on tables, or do you have to hunt them down just to get a refill? If there’s anything else I should be worrying about—stuff I haven't even thought of yet—please let me know.

Thanks!

I was there last Saturday for a wedding. It was the usual: everything except the service in the hall was terrible. Here is what was supposed to be on the tables:
beef ragu soup
cabbage rolls
the main course: rolled pork roast, veal cutlets in mushroom sauce, Chicago-style cutlets, chicken cutlet rolled with ham and cheese, risotto with peas, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables sautéed in butter.

But here is what actually happened and how it tasted:
The beef ragu soup was thin, bland, and the dough wasn't even fully cooked. I went for seconds, and even then, I only managed to find four tiny pieces of meat in total.
The cabbage rolls were mushy. The meat inside was pink and the rice was hard. To add to that, there were 12 of us at the table and we only received 8 cabbage rolls!

As for the main course, nothing looked like it should, and the taste wasn't right either. The meat with mushroom sauce was a disaster; the sauce was harsh and didn't taste like mushrooms, nor could you find any actual mushrooms in it. The rolled pork looked highly suspicious, so I didn't even bother tasting it. The Chicago-style and the rolled chicken cutlets were actually good.
The "risotto" wasn't even risotto, just plain rice shaped into a ball. The mashed potatoes were anything but; they were just boiled diced potatoes. As for the mixed vegetables, it was just carrots and cauliflower.

Bottom line—we all left hungry. Not only was the food mediocre, but there simply wasn't enough given the number of people at the table.

I won't comment on the drinks because I don't know if the hotel provided them or not.

The restroom smelled as soon as we entered the hall, so I highly doubt they were cleaning them, even though I didn't notice a huge mess with paper towels during the evening.

In general, we don't go there just for weddings; they host various events several times a year, so I'm there often. I can tell you the only positive thing is the staff—they are very fast, polite, and make sure things stay on the tables. They have a knack for keeping drinks flowing, but when it comes to food, there is never enough!

One more thing—be extremely careful when making arrangements with them. You have to ask about every single little detail. For example, they told this bride on Friday that she needed to bring her own glassware from the florist for the fruit arrangement that had been agreed upon long ago. This means they basically offer fruit in a crate if you don't bring everything yourself to make it look decent.

Basically... I have nothing positive to say about Blažo, except that they do have waiters. 👍

The Nikolina venue is massive; it holds 700 people, though I’ve heard it can accommodate up to 1,000. It feels sterile—all white and far too large for my taste. It always looks empty. If they dance during dinner service, the food arrives cold at the tables furthest from the kitchen. Simply put, the scale kills the atmosphere. Neither the head table nor the decor stands out. Out of all the venues, this is my least favorite.

At Karamarko, the pillars aren't ugly—they actually look quite nice—but they are incredibly impractical for dancing. At one wedding, some drunk lunatic pulled me while we were dancing in a circle, sending me crashing into a pillar. He just laughed, claiming he didn't even see it. Unbelievable. Naturally, I sprained my foot and couldn't walk properly for days, which was unfortunate since my own wedding was the following weekend.🙄 I wasn't stressed about it, though. Not at all.
I have no idea of the exact capacity, but I've noticed weddings there are usually smaller because those damn pillars eat up so much floor space. I attended two weddings there; both had about 350 guests, and the room felt perfectly full.

Mima is decent, though they've updated the look recently. They have burgundy accents now, including a burgundy and gold striped backdrop behind the head table. It photographs beautifully, but it isn't everyone's style. Personally, I think that hall is perfect for 450 to 550 people. You can squeeze in 600, but it becomes overcrowded.

Perić maxes out at 450 people. At that capacity, the chairs are so tight you have to shove them just to reach the aisle to stand up. It wasn't a dealbreaker for me, but it's worth noting. The hall itself is lovely.

I won't comment on pricing. They hike it up by a few hundred dollars every single year.

gentledriver92 said:Help me, please! Does anyone know where I can find Maggie Sotero dresses besides that one shop in Požega? I found the exact dress I want there, but it’s only in white, and since I’m looking for a different color, they have to special order it. And man, once you factor in the custom order, the rental price goes through the roof... honestly, it's like triple what I expected. That's just way too much for me. As far as I know, nobody near St. Louis carries them. If you know any shops around the St. Louis area, please let me know. I heard Atelier St might have them, but I can't find a phone number or email for them anywhere online. Nothing. 😢

Regards.

Atelier ST in Djakov does carry MS gowns. However, their prices are absolutely absurd. For the gown I ordered through Lisa, the price at Atelier ST would have been nearly double. Furthermore, they only stock large sizes, and their selection of the truly beautiful MS designs is nonexistent. Taste is subjective, but I couldn't find a single dress in that salon worth considering.

graniteangler13 said:Hi everyone!!
Does anyone have a recommendation for a solid photographer in Indianapolis or the surrounding areas???
Has anyone here actually worked with Infinity studio in Indy??? Based on what I’ve seen on their website, they seem to offer exactly the style I'm looking for, but I’ve heard some pretty bad things about them—specifically that people are waiting forever to get their wedding photos on disc, sometimes six months or even longer!!!! If anyone has personally dealt with them, please let me know!!
I’ve also heard that quite a few people from Indianapolis end up hiring photographers from Savannah, so if you know someone great down there, please share!!
Any advice at all would be much appreciated!!

There are already a few comments regarding Savannah photographers on this page and the previous one.👍

Some lady made those rules for me. I'm originally from the Midwest.

Here is our cake. It was exceptional—each layer offered a different flavor, from Snickers to chocolate, hazelnut, and Jaffa. Despite its massive size, nearly every bit was consumed.

Right. Let me be blunt. If you enjoy those cliché shots—sunbeams streaming behind you, kissing while heart-shaped bubbles float overhead—then they might be for you. Otherwise, skip them. You'll walk away with about 100 fewer photos than any other photographer would give you, and you'll pay more for the privilege. Out of everyone we visited, they were easily the worst.

Is that the guy from the pizzeria in the Midwest?

What do I know? Based on the photos I saw from both Ilya and Zoom, they looked excellent. Zoom only gained the edge because of his reputation with MM.

One should visit everyone and see how they operate. Not everyone shares our taste.🙂

Gregory Price11 said:I don't know, I heard some things regarding $1333... but generally speaking, I've heard nothing but glowing reviews about the photographer. When I went to discuss the details, I spoke with a woman. Regardless of how it turns out, I've already paid the deposit. Honestly, as long as the quality isn't worse than what Iliya provides, I'll be perfectly satisfied.☕

Listen. Nobody is going to say anything bad about who was satisfied. Personally, I found everyone to be fine, except for those Czech photographers. They are lagging behind in every single aspect, from photo editing to everything else. To make matters worse, their prices are higher than anyone else’s, yet they provide fewer shots. The most absurd part? When we were there, one of the women told us we wouldn't even get a wedding DVD, just some old video cassette.😲

Ilija took photos for my godmother, and the shots—as well as the DVD—are excellent. He shot my wedding too; everything was fine, but he missed several details that were quite important to me. I ended up getting married back in October, and the total cost for everyone was around $400. Even then, the premium photographers were charging more. $1333It isn't peak season yet, so prices are lower. During the high season, they hit $4,500. I realized that was a mistake, which is why I passed on them.

Why are you claiming Elijah isn't a good choice? I am merely curious. Real-world experiences could actually assist future couples during their selection process.

Gregory Price11 said:Greetings... honestly, if you look at photographers in the Chicago area, their rates tend to be much more affordable than what you'll find in St. Louis. For instance, Photo Brzica is $1333, though keep in mind the deposit is $167. Personally, I found them to be fantastic since I hired them myself. You might also want to look into Photo Zoom; their pricing is hovering right around the $4,000 mark, which is pretty similar to Photo Ilija. It really pays to just reach out and ask some questions first...😲

Neither Ilia nor Zoom are $1333. Unless they hiked their prices recently, I paid Zoom $3,000 plus extra for the thank-you card photos. Everyone is hovering around the $3,000 mark.
Generally speaking, everything is cheaper in a smaller Midwestern city than in a major hub like Chicago.

Regarding the rings—engraving, resizing, polishing—it's all included in their price.😉

As for Brzica, be careful who you actually negotiate with—the father or the son. You'll get two different stories. Also, if you don't direct the poses yourselves, the shots might end up monotonous. A friend used him, and every photo looked identical, like someone just walking past the lens. Not exactly creative. The editing is decent, but the compositions are boring. It’s better to stay involved so you aren't disappointed later.

They aren't smooth. There's a half-millimeter rim on each side that's polished, while the center has an icy matte finish. You can find a photo of it on the wedding ring page... just look there. If you need anything else, let me know.🙂

Respect to them, but they are $500 pricier than plenty of superior photographers in the Midwest... personally, they aren't the worst, but they are definitely at the bottom of my list of people I would actually hire. To each their own, I suppose.

Gregory Price11 said:Thank you... I actually looked around there as well, and I ended up being most satisfied with their collection. Because of that, I think I'll be getting mine from them too. I really did try to shop everywhere, but their selection is truly massive and just superior to the rest. Did you decide on white gold or yellow gold? Personally, I'm leaning toward white gold—I just find it much more aesthetically pleasing. 😵

White gold is the standard. I've never had any interest in the look of yellow gold. 😬
