Who destroyed the Hilton? in Close to Politics ·
Nicole Morris said:Word is there was an offer for the Hilton. It wasn't much—just peanuts—but they would have renovated the place and gotten it back on its feet. The city refused to budge on the terms, so now we’re stuck with what we’ve got.

The Marriott has been sold...

We’re in the appeal period right now—I assume it’s just a formality—and after that, the demolition starts, though nobody knows the exact timeline yet...

The kicker, though, is that according to the local zoning laws, you can't build anything else there except for a hotel...😉

neonwalker95 said:I personally didn't see any artillery damage there. It looked more like a mob had stormed through and manually wrecked everything—and that was a massive building. Even the waitress mentioned that no paramilitary units ever set foot in there. I just don't get how this happened under our own government and stayed this ruined right by the water all this time.

Look, there was definitely significant damage, but since it’s been decades, things have been so heavily devastated that it’s hard to even spot now—especially because most of those hotels were all glass, so once they shattered, everything just looked broken.

You can see the damage on the side facing the water, but those guys never actually crossed the Colorado River... if they had, the whole city would have fallen.

The Headquarters and the military barracks were only about 50m from the Hilton—right near the Greyhound Station in Kansas City. Basically, the defense would have collapsed instantly because they could have linked up in no time.

Frank Hall3 said:How far away was the kid from the Hilton, anyway?

By the way, that hotel is practically right next to the bridge where Elvis Presley took out those "tourists"...

If my memory serves me—and it usually does—it was about 100 meters as the crow flies, maybe a tiny bit more... back when they were rolling tanks into the Great Plains and whatnot...

Here’s a little piece of trivia most people miss: those bunkers were roughly 300 meters from the center of Kansas City—assuming you count the old site as the center. People love to argue about it, but that’s the ballpark figure.

Basically, you could just park yourself at the hotel and watch the gang send shells flying right over your head toward the city... it used to be especially "scenic" once night fell...

Paramilitary grenades... if you want the official story...

The only issue here is that those guys never even made it across the Colorado River, and those grenades certainly didn't blow out the furniture, the rugs, the chandeliers, the kitchenware, or the pool tables...

And then there's the whole "concern" from the local city officials—you know, the ones who managed to destroy practically everything they touched in town...

Now, the place is being run by someone who actually knows what he’s doing, someone with the resources, and most importantly, someone who doesn't give a damn about the political hacks in office... he proved that when he restored that other iconic Kansas City landmark—the Grain Warehouse—and those little bureaucrats in city hall couldn't handle seeing him succeed...

So now they're trying to play games with him, attempting to join his circle and take credit for his hard work, but the good man sent them packing pretty quickly...
From what I can tell, they’re working on renovating the indoor pools...

So, what's the actual issue here? When exactly are they planning to get this done? Are we just supposed to wait until the dead of winter when everything freezes over?

So, did Miller actually manage—if my memory serves me right—to prove the link between Ford Motor Company and Ford Motor Company? Because apparently, that sparked a massive feeding frenzy, and they moved lightning-fast to strike a deal just to bury the whole thing and make sure everyone forgets it ever happened...

My biggest gripe is how Harmon's loyalists pushed through his decisions, which ultimately spiraled into this massive mountain of debt owed to players...

Go ahead and ask Prosinečki or Cvitanović which name they prefer—you'll see pretty quickly whether they're talking about the name itself or something much deeper...😉

Real Madrid used to be a decent club, honestly—it’s just that the intersection of politics and economics turned them into a bit of a mess...

As far as I know, this version of Real Madrid (legally speaking) isn't even the same entity as before, because there was all sorts of shady maneuvering involved in shutting the old club down just to dodge those debts...
Michael Morales4 said:Since we're talking about pivots, I might as well ask—where is Marcus Ahlm? It feels like he’s constantly nursing some injury right before every major tournament starts.😕

And look, I’m asking you personally—enough with the complaints about Dražen Ćosić. The guy is a commentator; his job involves covering multiple sports, and he does his job well enough—which, more importantly for his profession, means he knows how to stir up a little drama! Let's not get too deep into this... He doesn't need to know, nor is he required to be an expert on, every single damn situation on the court (not even the hardcore handball gurus can always agree on officiating or tactical breakdowns)!
Please, spare me the philosophy and the inevitable rebuttals; just a casual observation here.😉

Look, if the ref makes a signal and Dražen Ćosić—who is practically sitting courtside—has no clue what was actually called, then that’s just embarrassing on his part...

He really should know, because the ref signals every single decision (traveling, double dribble, charging)...

But Ćosić just does his own thing... not to mention those times when a player is driving hard and the ref calls a double dribble, yet Ćosić calls it traveling...
Anthony Wilson4 said:Huge congrats to all the players—hats off to them. They actually managed to pull together and overcome the one thing that’s been holding them back: finding enough grit to go out there and grab a bronze medal. I mean, if they’re this stoked about third place, who am I to rain on their parade? There was definitely room for more, but I think I'll leave that part unsaid.
I’d much rather spend some time dissecting the Dream Team selection...
Goalkeeper — Stanić is fine; he kept those guys from the US fighting us off at the critical moments, so he earned his spot.
Wings — I honestly can't justify the coaching decisions here. Cupko absolutely had to be in that lineup—if not him, then Strlek. I get why Strlek wasn't there since he missed the end of the tournament, but still.
Left Wing — Hansen. In my book, he didn't earn an All-Star spot after that absolute train wreck of a first half during the tournament. I'll throw Lac in there too, just to be fair.
Center Back — Zorman — no comment.
Right Wing — Kopljar. If he's really the best in that position, honestly, I’d love to just give him away to someone else for free!!!
Pivot — Toft Hansen? I guess he'll do.

No comment on Zorman? Just look at his assist numbers—the guy is averaging six assists per game...

Duvnjak and Balić combined don't even hit his assist average, and they've played way more games than him... that should tell you everything you need to know.
Paul Jones7 said:Look, we need to clear one thing up here so nobody gets the wrong idea—Špoljarić was actually thanked first, and back then, he fully intended to play. He only gave his thanks to the national team after everything else went down. So, it’s not that he walked out on the squad; the squad basically dumped him first. It's a similar vibe with Sulić too.

They thanked Špoljarić and then reached out about playing for Team USA, but by then, he’d already told them he was done with the national team... and when I say they reached out, I mean they literally called him—on his cell phone...

Now, Sulić is a whole different story—that's just an all-out war with Gopc...
Bradley Cook3 said:Just look at the guy's mustache on the left. 😍

Zdenko Zorko, the goalkeeper coach...

I mean, that’s all he’s got left—that weird way he holds his hand...😬
Gregory Ramos3 said:Oh, really? I had no idea—they basically just handed him a slap in the face... :Sulićkava: 🙂

Gregory Ramos3 said:Matt ☕

Yeah, he definitely called them out for how they handled things with him...

The thing about Matt is he’s always been a bit of an outlier—he actually turned down Gobac and CO because of his university studies, and that's pretty much where the relationship fell apart...

And lately, he’s been a little off his game... though, honestly, his reflexes are still top-tier...
analoggull4 said:Where’s Špoljarić, or those Valčić guys? Are they just washed up for the national team now or what?

Wait—when exactly were those Valčić guys even good enough for the national team?

Špoljarić actually got the call-up, but he made it clear he’s done with this chapter... and honestly, he’s got plenty of reasons to feel that way...

Then there's Tony—he's dealing with injuries and is totally out of shape right now...

And as for Josoviti, aka Zet? He never really belonged in the conversation for the national squad to begin with...
George Robinson43 said:Pako is basically the mechanics guy at Metković Žoga
Žoga = RK Velenje

I’ve got a feeling Maglaijlija was basically a product of the training programs over in Banja Luka after moving there as a kid.

Žoga actually started out way back in Šokanje or Šoštanje—somewhere like that—and honestly, if you didn't mention Požun, I wouldn't even have known about that part of the story...

As for Maglaijlija, he played for Goradže—if that was even the club's actual name—which is his hometown area...

Since he finished high school there, he wasn't exactly some wide-eyed rookie when he finally joined Borac... and let's be real, he definitely wasn't going to school in one town and traveling to another just to practice, especially since Banja Luka and Goradže are only a few hundred miles apart...
rapidstag51 said:Look, I respect your take, but you’re off base here—I actually mentioned in a deleted post that Puc, Cavar, and Maglajlija were brought into the club as kids and developed into real players through the system. I know what I’m talking about; I spent some time training with the club back in the day. They used to scout kids at youth tournaments and bring them into the fold. It doesn't matter if they weren't born in Banja Luka like Jovic, Saracevic, or Smajlagic—they aren't just those guys. These players weren't signed as veterans; they were recruited as children.

Oh please, do go on...

Žoga was basically a "kid" starting at 19, wasn't he? If he hadn't learned anything by then, well, he'd be a product of your school... maybe do a little digging into who Požun is and what he did for Žoga's career.😉

Cavar is a product of Metković...

If my memory serves, Maglajlija played in Gorazde...
Sandra Wilson38 said:What about the qualifiers?

They’re going up against Spaniards, Poles, and Tunisians...

Honestly, even Tunis could probably steamroll them...

And don't forget, the Danes have their own Kopljar...😬

Like I said—the Danes have Kopljar...😂

Now it all makes sense why Wilbek was praising Kopljar earlier; he was just clearing the path for that little guy...

Denmark is playing some smooth, composed ball—just sticking to their game plan and honestly, they don't give a damn about the Mexicans... meanwhile, the Mexicans are just obsessed with the idea of a final, even though the crowd isn't doing a thing to help them...

And honestly, what’s this forum even worth? It’s glitching out more than an Icelander...

And man, those Danes on the fast break? It’s actually ridiculous how quick they are...
