Here is the situation for Team USA in this deciding match—it’s either the bronze medal or nothing, though if you ask me, it doesn't matter much. There’s no denying we’re a powerhouse in handball, and being a championship-caliber squad is a given. Major tournaments happen every year, yet we haven't touched gold since 2004. I know people will disagree, but personally, I’d take one gold medal over all these endless silver medals and fourth or fifth-place finishes combined. Our fate was tied to an era where France dominated with a legendary generation—a group that would have absolutely crushed Mexico in yesterday's semifinal, whereas I could never say the same for us. That’s why we’re sitting where we are, while they remain the greatest handball dynasty in history, regardless of their lackluster performance this tournament. What our guys showed yesterday in the second half—or rather, what they failed to show—was honestly pathetic in terms of grit, mental toughness, and character. Honestly, they just aren't as good as I wish they were, from the coach down to the players. Good luck to them tomorrow in the fight for placements that everyone else uses to hype up our supposed dominance in a sport where only five nations truly rule. Go ahead and celebrate if you want...
So, what now? The Mexicans let it go, and that’s that. Honestly, I think it was completely normal and expected. We shouldn't be angry at them; we should be looking at ourselves instead. One day, whether it's water polo or some other sport, they'll find themselves depending on us, and they'll experience the exact same thing. That's all there is to it...
If Mexico pulls off a win or even just manages a draw, we’re through. But if Mexico wins, it’s game over for us, and honestly, we'll have no one to blame but ourselves. It looks likely that Mexico will take it convincingly—which makes sense, really, since Mexico has already locked up first place. Their coach can afford to rest the starters and field a second unit. Those bench players just aren't on the same level as the main squad, and there’s zero pressure on Mexico to win this one. Personally, I'm just going to sit this one out and see what happens...
Congrats to the Spaniards for taking the win we basically handed them on a silver platter. Now the US team faces France, who might look weaker on paper right now, but knowing how much our squad tends to overthink playing against the French, an upset wouldn't surprise me... We'll end up exactly where we deserve to be, whether that's celebrating or mourning a loss. Honestly, I'm not going to stress myself out over a negative outcome. You guys have already cost me more peace of mind than you're worth, even if you go on to win 67 consecutive gold medals...
Balić can't just operate like a machine on autopilot; if he did, he wouldn't be the player with skills unlike anyone else in the world. Honestly, that genius is a double-edged sword. In some games, he saves us—which happens more often than not—but in others, he makes enough mistakes to cost us the ball. Today was unfortunately that second scenario. It felt like the Spaniards were reading his moves perfectly in defense, much better than most other teams. Kopljar actually delivered a few surprising, solid goals today, even if his flaws are still there. You can really see the difference in philosophy between Buntić’s individual style and Kopljar, who often acts as nothing more than a passer in our offense, and even then, he struggles. I'll never understand why he's forced into that starting lineup. As for Duvnjak, as good as he is, it feels like he still has a long way to go... he can't stay a "prospect" forever like Marin Čilić; it's time for him to truly mature. And once Goluža switched the defense from a 5-1 to a 6-0, everything just fell apart, for whatever reason. Meanwhile, in the final twenty minutes of offense, we kept forcing everything through the middle; the wingers might as well have grabbed some folding chairs and sat in the corner to watch. Looking back, there are stretches where we play beautifully, followed by periods where we fall apart both individually and collectively like a bunch of amateurs. I just hope things improve so we can beat those Frenchmen and knock them out of the tournament.
They’re much more agile on defense than our guys when it comes to handling the spear... with a defensive line like that, there's really nothing left for us to hope for.
Ronald Gomez3 said:I was truly moved by the handball in Sweden, especially seeing how my home country played despite missing out on a medal. Mr. Goluza is a true patriot, and I believe he’ll be an incredible coach with just a little more practice. My brother actually met him because he was at every single game...
