Personally, I’ve always had a soft spot for Windows 7, especially because of how well it handles older hardware. Even on my seven-year-old desktop with just a meager 1.5 gigs of RAM, it still runs quite smoothly... I've spent plenty of time testing it out myself

He won't necessarily be forced to buy it immediately, but he isn't going to get any more beta updates because those expire shortly after the final version is released... Once that happens, the system will lock him out, leaving him no choice but to install the full version so he can actually receive updates and SP

Frank Sanchez12 said:Thanks, guys... though honestly, I think these versions of Windows might actually end up being some of the best we've seen...

We are still a long way from calling this "the best"... first they need to get through RC1, then likely RC2, and finally the RTM release. We won't know until we see if they actually addressed anything in RC1. There are plenty of bugs in Beta1, but nothing too catastrophic or impossible to fix...

I'm inclined to agree. I should also mention that Alcohol and Daemon wouldn't work for me at all, though a colleague mentioned they can function if you tweak the Interoperability settings properly. I wasn't aware of that workaround myself, but there it is... 🙂

@Mike! 👍

I appreciate the compliment... truly... 👍 There is something undeniably striking about the horse; they possess a certain grace and an intelligence that truly commands respect... 😉

boldcyclist11 said:Hold on, what exactly was wrong with my take? These betas are just pure nonsense. You install them, realize they're useless, and then you end up wiping your perfectly functional Windows XP or Vista just to get back to a stable build so your computer actually works again... it's just foolishness.

Honestly, the level of civility here is nonexistent, and it’s clear you’ve got that classic, narrow-minded attitude where you just lash out at anything that doesn't fit your worldview.

Look, man, like I already told you, nobody is forcing you to mess around with Windows beta builds. In fact, you should probably be grateful there are people actually using them; if it weren't for them, you'd have to spend half a month grinding away just to afford an official release, whereas now you can just grab it online for nothing, yet you still choose to complain...

Just calm down, and maybe stop trying to download things you clearly aren't sophisticated enough to handle.

Anyway, I'm going to go enjoy a cup of coffee... ☕

boldcyclist11 said:What kind of nonsense is this, talking about betas? Why would anyone bother with beta versions, jumping from version 6 to 7, when you don't even know what you're supposed to be installing... instead of just waiting for the full release and calling it a day? When is a legitimate, full version of Windows 7 actually going to drop?

Try actually reading the last page of this thread. You'll see the announcement once it happens.

By the way, hasn't it occurred to you that betas are released specifically so people can stress-test the OS, gather feedback, and squash bugs so that the actual final product is as polished as possible... Besides, nobody is forcing you to download beta builds. Just wait for the official release and be done with it.🤷

I can confirm this from my own direct experience; the data holds up... 👍

You can certainly do that without any issues...😉

You've got Thunderbird and you're good to go... although personally, I just handle everything through webmail...

Just go ahead and run the installer... you just didn't mention how much RAM you're working with... it would be wise to have at least 1GB or maybe 2GB if you plan on actually playing games... my own session eats up about 500 MB of RAM while idling... and the CPU usage is minimal... it's a solid system, but I am running into some issues with certain drivers...

Which drivers specifically?

I would gladly lend a hand, but I have never encountered this particular issue before... it is likely just another bug inherent to Windows 7.

So tell me, what software have you installed lately? It is possible one of those programs is causing the conflict...

I couldn't say for certain, because while it should theoretically work, I haven't personally gone through the trouble of testing it myself...

Adding that extra gig will make everything run smoothly enough 😉

Thanks!

It’ll work fine for surfing the web, hitting up MSN, and listening to some music... don't go expecting anything more than that... 😉

Jonathan Newman47 As stated by:
I would appreciate it if someone could provide a more substantial explanation regarding the improvements seen in Windows 7 over Vista. So far, no one has actually laid out any concrete details explaining why Windows 7 is supposedly superior to Vista...

Is it even worth... Jonathan Morris40 I find myself in complete agreement with that sentiment; there really aren't any earth-shattering shifts when you compare it to Windows Vista...

I find myself wondering about this as well. It’s possible they presented a slightly altered interface during the rollout, and now everyone is losing their minds and treating a standard operating system like some kind of divine revelation...

I maintained that it would eventually surpass Windows Vista, and I have absolutely no doubt about its potential, but looking at this beta version, it certainly isn't better...

Anyway, I think Raymond Sanders84 feels exactly the same way... 👍

Gerald Carter5 said:I upgraded my Vista machine to the Windows 7 beta, and honestly, everything seems to be running perfectly fine... the OS is a massive step up from Vista, quite frankly. I’m really liking the feel of it; it’s noticeably snappier, and I can't wait for the final release to drop.

Give it a week before you start celebrating 😁

nimblemaker52 said:If you’re comparing programs across two different operating systems, obviously those exact same programs are going to pull the same amount of memory... the whole point is how much the OS itself consumes right out of the gate, and Windows 7 actually uses less than Vista does. Honestly, I don't see why everyone is making such a huge deal out of it, because nowadays 4 GB is plenty for any basic task☕
it was the exact same outcry when Windows XP launched, considering Windows 98 used to run fine on 32 MB, so people lost their minds when they suddenly needed at least 256 MB just to get through the day☕

You clearly missed my point. When I ran both Vista and Windows 7 with the exact same two applications open, Vista was sitting at precisely 2.22 GB of RAM usage, just like it is now with Windows 7.

So, if my math is correct, Vista and Windows 7 are pulling the same amount of memory from the system...

Furthermore, I should point out that having 4 gigs isn't some magic number that stays relevant forever. For instance, just a year ago, having 2 gigs felt like a luxury, but today... it's practically nothing.

Noah Miller6 said:@Makavelii

You're full of it; it actually uses less memory than Windows Vista

Try putting it under some actual pressure on Windows XP by running AutoCAD 2009 and CATIA simultaneously, then try doing the exact same thing on Windows 7...

What I’m trying to say is, it’s just different packaging for the same thing. Whether it’s Vista or Windows 7, the resource drain is identical...

I ran those two programs myself, and it was pulling exactly 2.22GB of RAM... 😕

Vista pulls the same amount. So, if your workflow consists of just those two programs, 2 gigs simply isn't going to cut it... ☕

It started throwing minor errors where Explorer would just freeze up, forcing me to kill everything and restart... essentially, it's unstable...🙄
The graphics are decent and the hardware support is solid—everything feels snappy—but this idea that it uses less RAM is nothing but a myth. I'll stick with it for now since I managed to get everything installed successfully, and I'll just keep grabbing updates daily in the hope that they iron out the kinks...

I barely managed to get my Skystar 2 functional; the DISEQC motor control only responds at 18V, and at 13V, the motor won't budge. On top of that, ProgDVB throws ten errors before it finally decides to launch properly. But whatever, it runs...😛
I can only hope things improve. We'll see how it goes. Initially, I was satisfied because I wasn't hitting any walls, but now a string of issues has cropped up, so I'll just have to wait and see...

Best regards.
