Fifth and eighth graders are getting hit with new national standardized tests. We did some digging to see what's actually going on

Tomašević:
"Look, we’re starting a new school year. Honestly, the stats aren't the big deal here. What actually matters is that we aren't touching any of the rights students already have regarding textbooks and supplies.

On a brighter note, we managed to pull some funding from the EU over the last few months to help with classroom aides. We're looking at tripling the number of aides funded by those EU grants. We'll have 925 aides on board this time, which is a record—that covers about 1,049 students.

As for keeping classes running, nothing is changing there. We've already got transportation sorted out for the kids who have to travel to schools outside their immediate area."

Anything new? A special on the education system

We’re looking at yet another school year filled with nothing but uncertainty. For instance, those epidemic measures they roll out right at the start? They might be totally useless by the end of the year. If a new wave of the pandemic hits, how is teaching even going to work? And what about the students and teachers in areas hit hard by earthquakes—how ready are they really? How much have stress and those weird school conditions messed with everyone actually learning the material? We're digging for answers to all of this in a special "Anything New" episode focused on education as the new school year kicks off. Joining the Secretary of Education, Radovan Fuchs, will be a whole lineup of teachers, professors, principals, psychologists, and students.

And once again, we'll have 500 guests on screen, and every single one of them will manage to say exactly one sentence before the segment ends. 🤦🤦🤦

That's exactly how I handle it too.

mellowskipper said:That’s where I get tripped up too. Screens are constantly flipping around, they have to transcribe everything, and then the professor is trying to explain things and quiz them at the exact same time.
In the end, they don't even finish copying it down, so they have to go back and do it later—and then if they need her to explain something else on top of that... it's just a mess. Honestly, teaching math online is a total nightmare.

Why doesn't she just upload a PowerPoint presentation to the docs? That's how I handle things.

I'll explain everything clearly, and then everyone can just copy whatever they want whenever they feel like it.

jadetinker85 said:Of course you get the point. You were the one saying those who are afraid should just go get vaccinated.
But once I bring up the example of someone who’s had two shots and is now stuck in diapers on supplemental oxygen, suddenly you don't get the point?

Look, I know a guy who smoked a pack a day his whole life and lived to be 90, but I also know a woman who never touched a cigarette in her life and died of lung cancer at 50.

We could go on like this forever.

Department Secretary Fuchs held a press conference and confirmed that restrictions are finally loosening up.

"Based on everything we learned last year, plus what the research is showing us, we’re relaxing the rules. Kids in grades 1 through 5, who haven't really been mixing or moving around much anyway, will be allowed to mingle during the next period. We're also going to allow students to mix during elective classes and tutoring sessions—stuff that was stuck behind a screen online last year. We feel like we can dial it back now."

"For the older kids, they'll be able to switch classrooms again and use specialized labs like physics, chemistry, and computer science rooms. On top of that, school sports are getting a green light; teams can be made up of students from different grades. However, the gyms are still staying closed for just casual recreational play."

"We're also bringing back in-person parent-teacher conferences. Both parents and teachers have been begging for this."

"Vocational training can happen right in the classrooms again. We're reopening those internships at local companies because, honestly, you can't have vocational education without that hands-on experience."

"Masks are still required for anyone in fifth grade and up if they can't maintain that six-foot distance. And look, if one student gets sick, we aren't shutting down the entire class anymore. Only the few students sitting directly to their left and right will need to isolate," Fuchs said.

He also mentioned they aren't exactly thrilled with the vaccination rates among school staff, which is hovering around 50 percent. He announced that any unvaccinated teachers or professors will be forced to wear masks while they teach.

"The story about firing people who won't get vaccinated just doesn't fly, especially when half of them haven't taken the shot. I mean, where would we even find 20,000 replacements for them?"

When asked if teachers who aren't vaccinated or haven't had the virus will be forced to take regular tests, Fuchs said it wasn't that simple to pull off.

"Technically, they should be testing twice a week, but that's easier said than done. It would be a whole lot better if they just got vaccinated."

Milan Basta said:Germany surrendered on May 7, 1945, but Nazi Germany didn't.

When you start rambling about rights being stripped away from POWs, which specific Geneva Convention are you even talking about? These things get updated and tweaked constantly, so don't just throw terms around.

By that logic, do you actually agree with how the Germans treated Soviet prisoners during World War II?

And when exactly did Nazi Germany "surrender"? Was it May 15th?

Yeah, this thread: I can't believe I'm even seeing this kind of garbage on my feed today. Seriously, some people just have zero common sense. You see these threads popping up all the time where people act like they’ve discovered fire, but it’s actually just pure stupidity. It’s the same old story. People get worked up over nothing, making massive assumptions without checking a single fact. It’s exhausting. Honestly, I remember back when I was working at that tech startup in Austin—everyone was constantly arguing about things that didn't even matter, just to hear themselves talk. It’s a total waste of energy. And don't even get me started on the "experts" in these comments. They think because they have an internet connection, they suddenly have a PhD in everything. It’s pathetic. We need more actual logic and way less ego if we’re ever going to have a decent conversation online. Just a thought.

Another "alternative" health hack, this time claiming you can kick parasites out of your system just by drinking tea 🤦
Ashley Martin81 said:Thanks for the reminder... though I suppose my question isn't really about parasites and their treatment specifically... it's just that nobody seems to have addressed the core of what I'm actually asking... which is, what does it truly mean when we say we "gain immunity" after recovering from a viral illness? For instance, if we look at chickenpox, which is caused by a virus—and I consider viruses to fall under the umbrella of parasites as well—my real question is whether it is even possible to develop lasting immunity or resistance against parasitic infections. I think I need someone to clarify the fundamental concept of immunity for me... because if we catch chickenpox once, we presumably can't get it again... so if they are essentially parasites, how is it that we become immune to reinfection? Furthermore, if we distinguish between micro and macro parasites (that is how I've categorized them), why is it that if we deal with something like pinworms—which is also a parasite—we don't naturally gain any immunity to that? No one has really explained the part that confuses me... it almost feels as though bacteria and viruses are all grouped together within the category of parasites... which would mean we are essentially falling ill to the same type of agent... just varying in scale from micro to macro... and if these parasites multiply within the body, then perhaps we can never fully eradicate them, leaving it as merely a matter of time before they impact an organ... they could potentially settle in various internal organs and gradually diminish their function without the person experiencing severe symptoms, and by the time someone actually notices, it might already be too late...

..and I suppose I am rambling a bit there... but it feels to me like doctors are perfectly aware of everything that can stem from parasites, yet they also know that some aren't particularly dangerous or life-threatening... so, I imagine they might instead opt to prescribe medications that simply mask the symptoms rather than addressing the underlying cause...

🤦🤦

They aren't called PARASITES for nothing! Go look up the actual biological definition of a parasite if you don't believe me.

This isn't even "alternative" medicine.

back on the off-topic MK group, we used to gang up on him (not Larry Walker24, just bluecyclist64) and it totally worked—turns out that's the secret formula for success.

I've had some heat thrown my way at Gastronomy too, but I'm still in.

but I'm getting roasted on MK because I commented on some dude's photos, and now those guys are out for blood.😂>

I told you straight up not to comment on the moderation, but you went and did exactly that. You harass other people, and then when you get flagged for it, you turn around and claim everyone is out to get you. You brought this on yourself. Honestly, I don't care which specific mod handed you the penalty this time.

Who am I even harassing?

Whatever, Wednesday will be here soon.

The point is, some random mod who's just filling a seat handled it. That's the whole reason for my appeal.

Wow, unbanned on Thursday and already banned again. Unbelievable. I think my record was getting unbanned at 3:00 PM and being back in the doghouse by 5:00 PM.

Thanks for the reply, rustydrifter10. Just so you know, I'm adding another one of Andrew's strikes to my list—I'm keeping track.
