*army

edit:
I just realized. Rebecca got a remake too. 🙄
The New Yorker (2021) in Movies ·
And look, I haven't forgotten that those things exist, just as I haven't forgotten the various absurdities going on over at the magazine headquarters, but I simply cannot compare that mess to these three prices—each of which is its own distinct entity from start to finish.

But which five, exactly?

that shit don't fly with me ☕

If filmmakers eighty years ago were capable of producing noir films with coherent, meaningful narratives, why on earth can't someone making a movie today manage the same feat?

SPOILER

There’s this one scene where the old cop says, "Alex killed Sandie."

To me, that implies the old guy actually knew exactly who was responsible for the killings. But if he did, why didn't he step in? He was a police officer, for God's sake. It just doesn't add up.

Ashley Grant66 said:I mostly picked up on the influences of Suspiria and Repulsion. There’s probably more there, but I definitely felt some echoes of The Neon Demon as well, if I recall correctly.

Not much to add since we seem to be on the same page here.
👍

Repulsion is a masterpiece; Suspiria is just okay; and The Neon Demon is absolute garbage.

As for this film, I actually liked it at first. The middle section was great, but the ending left much to be desired.

My rating is lower because:
1. That villainous little prank from a Kinder Egg starts working its magic, but then it just fizzles out as the minutes tick by.👎
2. A botched murder attempt in a library that gets completely ignored or forgotten.😢
3. Any character with half a brain wouldn't fail to find out the name of the person they're trying to pin the murder on.🙄

Six out of ten.

And honestly... you can't seriously argue that all three films sit on the same level, especially when the first one was clearly superior. I don't mind that Wes Anderson tends to iterate on similar themes, but The Grand Budapest Hotel was a far better piece of filmmaking.

On another note, I caught The New York Times in theaters recently. Not a single person walked out, and there was this constant, low-level chuckling from the audience throughout the entire runtime. I suppose that was somewhat intended.
Nightmare Alley (2021) in Movies ·
I watched the original. It was decent enough.
Red Notice (2021) in Movies ·
I completely slipped my mind that he was actually in Blade... I suppose it's because Blade: Trinity is such an absolute disaster of a movie.
Filth (2013) in Movies ·
A truly surreal piece of cinema; I've already sat through it twice. 👍
Red Notice (2021) in Movies ·
A decent little flick; I managed to crack a smile a few times 👍

The leading lady certainly has an eye for elegance.

I usually find myself gravitating toward films like this, even if I end up thinking they're absolute garbage. But let's be honest: the movie was weak.

mellowskipper said:Also, I’ve started finding Reynolds a bit grating lately. He seems stuck in this loop, playing basically the same archetype in every single flick. If he were actually handed a heavy, serious role, who knows if he even has the range to pull it off...

I suspect he's reached such a high tier in this industry that he can handpick his projects.

If he truly wanted to tackle a gritty drama or some other legitimate acting challenge, I'm sure he would have done it by now.
Cry Macho (2021) in Movies ·
Underwhelming.

Now, Shooter was actually a decent watch, but this? This felt completely mediocre.

A five out of ten.

It doesn't even come close. RPO is better.

Well... there’s a fresh idea there... though the execution leaves much to be desired.

A six.
Candyman (2021) in Movies ·
I haven't had a chance to sit down with the new "Candyman" yet, though I will say "Get Out" was a remarkably solid piece of filmmaking.

As for "Us," it felt somewhat underwhelming to me.
