velvetdrifter15 said:Some big-shot expert here—tell me, which is better to install: Windows 7 Ultimate or Professional?

According to this page, there isn't much of a difference.
The Ultimate version just adds data encryption and support for 35 languages. 🙄
If those two things aren't dealbreakers for you, feel free to just go with the Professional version. 🙂

Have you tried messing with any of the BIOS settings yet?

Can you try popping that Windows 7 DVD back in and taking a photo of whatever error message pops up (the one saying it needs an Acer Recovery DVD)?

ironpilot29 said:Hey,
I've got a 1GB Dell Inspiron quad Core running Windows Vista Home, which is easily the biggest pile of Microsoft's garbage I've ever dealt with. Honestly, I'm fed up because Vista keeps freezing on me for absolutely no reason. I want to install Windows 7. I already picked up a Windows 7 DVD containing all the OEM versions (though they're non-localized)
The manufacturer put a hidden partition on there for recovery files, so if the system crashes, you can just pop in an Acer Recovery DVD and reinstall Windows Vista Home. The problem is, whenever I try to install Windows 7, it keeps bugging me to use the Acer Recovery DVD.
How do I get rid of this hidden partition
and wipe all this manufacturer junk clean so the Windows 7 installation actually works? (I want to do the exact same thing to my laptop)
Thanks in advance.

🤔 You probably need to disable the Disk to Disk (D2D) recovery option in the BIOS.

Nicholas Mendoza said:I'm having trouble installing Windows 7
When I run the setup, I get this error: setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application
The issue is probably because I'm trying to install 64-bit Windows 7 while currently running 32-bit Windows XP. It won't even boot from the DVD. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Athlon 6000 X2
2 GB RAM
XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB

Help!!!

It doesn't matter that you're on Windows XP 32-bit right now and want to move to Windows 7 64-bit.

Your processor supports both 32-bit and 64-bit OSes, the memory is plenty for standard Windows 7 operation, and as for the graphics card, if you need drivers, they exist for this week too.

As for booting from the DVD, you can fix that in the BIOS. Restart the PC, tap the right key (Del or F8, I can't remember which), and change the "boot sequence."

Let me know if you get stuck.🙄

goldenbear9 said:I'm 14. What am I supposed to know about programming by age 8? 😕 I know about that Everest Ultimate edition program, but I was wondering if it shows up in the Control Panel or something...

Maybe I missed it too, but I don't think you'll find anything specific about the motherboard just sitting inside Windows. You might find something in the BIOS, maybe, but you'll definitely find it in that Everest software mentioned earlier.

Back to the strategic question: Windows 7 or not? 🙄
Are you any closer to making a call? What part is still fuzzy?

Then again, we agreed from the jump that you were going to skip the retail store, right? 😉

It’s a decent enough idea. Might as well toss some food in their beak, and once that's done, ☕

How do I check my motherboard?????

Everything runs on very high settings for me. 😁

(Any thoughts on this week???)

Download Everest Ultimate edition and you'll get all the info you need about your Picek, including the motherboard details. 😉

...or click here and run a system scan on that page.

goldenbear9 said:I was actually thinking about that Service Pack myself, but I can't justify waiting another six months for it. 😲

If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't waste any more time sitting around waiting. Just install Windows 7 already.

The only thing I can't speak to from firsthand experience is gaming on Windows 7.
Take that game you're running on Windows XP, Crysis Warhead. From what I’ve gathered browsing around the web, user experiences are all over the place. For some people, installing CW is a total breeze and the performance is solid, but then you have others who can't even get the damn thing to launch. You'd be better off doing some actual digging—look for specific patches or updates designed to get the game running properly on Windows 7.

Once you finally pull the trigger on installing Windows 7, let me know if you run into any issues. 🙂

I DID NOT SAY I HAVE AN OLD COMPUTER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Crysis Warhead runs on very high for me -.- !!!! (I just meant I've been using XP for 6 years)

Intel Core quad CPU Q8200 2.33 4
4 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9800 gt 512 mb (I think, how do I check?) but it has its own cooling and I haven't even pushed it yet 😁)

BUT thanks for the reply. Do you maybe have a comparison between XP and W7 or any advice on whether I should switch or notb> ????

Others have already suggested places where you can learn more about the differences between Windows XP, Vista, and 7; I'll just say "one more thing..."

Why do it? Because Windows 7 has been pretty stable since the beta phase, back when I first installed it. 👍
Why not? Because it was just released to the market, and regardless of what others experienced during the development/testing stages (beta, RC, RTM), you might want to wait for the first service pack before deciding to jump to 7 🙄

To find your graphics card info in XP, do this:
Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, then under Hardware Components on the left side, open Display; everything will be listed there 😉

Based on the hardware you're running XP on, you have no reason to worry about how 7 will perform on the same setup. I'm running 7 on a Core 2 duo 2.4 with 4 GB RAM (machine is 2 years old) and I'm very satisfied; so far, everything works perfectly.

Gregory Hayes87 said:Look, I don't care if someone can explain this to me in plain English using just one sentence (I know English, it’s not like I can’t speak it) but I honestly have no clue what they're talking about here.

Sure, but it's going to be a complex sentence, alright? 😉

From your current Windows XP machine, load the burned DVD for the week; the setup should launch automatically (if it doesn't, just open the DVD contents, find setup.exe, and double-click it); walk through the initial installation steps; once you hit the installation type screen, select Custom (advanced) and follow the prompts until it's finished.

P.S. Don't forget to back up EVERYTHING you care about on that XP machine.😳

There you go—one simple, complex sentence (with a disclaimer). 😁

goldenbear9 As specified by Noah Sanchez39:
I've been running Windows XP for about six years now. Honestly, I just haven't had any desire to switch over to Vista.🤮Look, I'm a gamer. But let’s be real—I also use this rig for actual work, which means performance across the board matters just as much as raw gaming speed.
I'm wondering if it's actually worth making the jump to Windows 7 this week—especially since I wouldn't be picking up a retail copy from the store. Does anyone know if my games and software will even run on Windows 7?
THANKS.
Can anyone list some actual reasons to ditch Windows XP for Windows 7?

Which games? Which programs? Did you even bother checking compatibility for them this week? 🤷
Is it worth it? Absolutely—even if you decide to skip the store entirely. 🙄
Look, just listen to what everyone else is saying. Scroll back through the last few pages of this subforum; you'll actually find some useful info if you bother to look. ☕

Does anyone have info on Office 2007, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Corel, TuneUp 2009, CCleaner, Winamp, PowerDirector, and other popular utilities?

I'm thinking about installing the 32-bit version of Windows 7...

I’m running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit at my place, and I can confirm that Office 2007 and CCleaner work perfectly fine on it. 👍

As for the rest of the software mentioned above, check this out:

AutoCAD (The link is right here.)
SolidWorks (I can't see any link here. You forgot to include it.)
Corel... honestly, what a joke.Link.)
TuneUp 2009.I can't see any link here. You forgot to include it.)
Winamp (The link is right here.)

Here’s how you handle it in Windows 7:

Right-click on My Documents

Move
Apply/OK

velvetlynx63 said:Hey guys, how do I set up Windows 7 so my documents go to a different partition instead of the C drive?

Still stuck at work, grinding away on this old Windows XP machine.

Have you tried right-clicking My Documents, hitting Properties, and then checking the Target folder location? 🙄

Sam Murphy said:And what would you actually gain by upgrading to Windows 7?

Hmm...🤔

Look, at my job, I'm stuck using Windows XP Pro SP3 on a Pentium 4, 1.60GHz, with 512MB of RAM. Could things be better? Sure. My coworker and I have been waiting months for new PCs, but still nothing. And even when they finally show up, there's a 99% chance we'll still be running the "good old, reliable" Windows XP. It’s a bit early to jump to Windows 7.

At home, though, I've got a two-year-old machine with a Core 2 duo, 2.4GHz, and 4GB of RAM. For the most part, Windows 7 runs incredibly well. Performance is 👍👍. I'm not much of a gamer or a programmer, but overall, I'm very happy with how everything performs.

In your case, I don't know how old your Windows XP PC is or what the specs are (CPU, drive, memory, graphics), but if your setup is similar to mine, you shouldn't worry. Just do a clean install of 7 and you're set.

As much as people resist new tech by sticking to proven, stable systems like Windows XP, I think Windows 7 was finally built the right way. Still, it's smart to double-check if your most-used apps are compatible with the new OS and if your drivers are up to date... 😉

Sam Murphy said:Can I actually upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista without formatting everything? And what’s the real point of moving to Vista or 7 anyway?

Upgrading from XP to Vista is doable; this page covers the details

For a look at Windows 7 from an XP user's perspective, check here

IMHO, now that 7 is officially "out," jumping from XP to Vista won't get you much of anything.
If you have the time (and the patience), there's a pretty massive 15-page deep dive on Windows 7 you can read here

If only they’d recommend decent drivers for my Sapphire Radeon hd 3870 512 mb GDDR4. The latest ones for Windows 7 keep freezing on me.

Check Windows 7 here, hopefully you'll find what you're looking for; just pick your specific model, select Windows 7 (32- or 64-bit), and hit "Submit." 😉
