SXSW 2005 - San Diego in Music ·
Olivia Martinez3 said:I heard Nightwish might actually show up in San Diego for SXSW! That lineup was absolutely insane...

They won't. But you might see Anthrax, Amon Amarth, Rage (not Against the Machine 😬), and maybe Sepultura.

analogharbor442, are you having vision problems too? 😁 The cards are 280, 300, and $110. 🤣

Where's the band? What am I supposed to do, just stumble around with some bassline and call it a day? 😕

I get the logic completely; I was just (intentionally) speaking from the perspective of a spoiled fan.😉

Unbelievable... Turning down Electric Frankenstein because of that garbage... You people have lost it. I was actually looking forward to seeing how Liars and EF would mesh together—I was ready to head over to something for them, but neither Liars nor Watt are big enough draws to justify paying for a train ticket just for their sake. Dammit!

I think I’ll just use Watt as my excuse to head out for drinks with the crew. 🙂

Watt’s big role model?! Good grief, how old is that guy anyway? 😁

Remind me again, what was the date for He Who Must Not Be Named? Was it April 17th, or something like that?

ironcrane7 said:Song of the week - Thunderbolt. Probably the most bizarre country arrangement in history. It’s got everything... almost sounds like a New Orleans brass band.

The Fall covered that one. Great. I need to dig up the original...

Listen to Spinal Tap. 😁

He’s got another decent one, "Everything's Coming Up Roses." The rest of the record is absolute garbage. 😢

By the way, Talking Heads - I'm not in Love (personally, I think their "Speaking in Tongues" takes the prize for the best mainstream album of the eighties)

Hard to argue with that. I’ve got that one and "Dazzle Ships" in my collection—both are solid picks.

not Talking Heads 🙂 🙂

True. This is easily one of my favorite picks from the '80s mainstream: the debut from The B-52s. It’s infectious, fun, and actually quite musically sophisticated, especially considering the band was started by two guys who were essentially just hairdressers. 😬 For me, it sits right at number three on my list of all-time great synth-pop albums, trailing only behind Kraftwerk's "Man-Machine" and "Songs about Sex." 😁

Not bad. It’s been a while. 😎

Young Cannibals... 🙄 If they ever do a "Best of FYC" release, here's my take: include "Johnny Comes Home," maybe throw in that Buzzcocks cover on the 🙂B-side as a curiosity. Everything else? Trash.

But "Johnny" is a true masterpiece of minimalist pop... 🙏

Cyndi. 😎

😁

Cyndi is punk. 👍

Debbie Gibson is also punk, considering she recorded a track with the hardcore band Circle Jerks back in '96. The song is absolute garbage, though that's entirely on the Circle Jerks...

Nicholas King62 said:Man, punk attitude right there! 😬 What’s wrong with 128? You can hear everything you need to, it doesn't take up much space, and it's an easy download. The real trouble only starts once you drop below 128.

That's just not true. Sure, 128 kbps works, but it isn't a guarantee of quality—it all comes down to the encoder. Most of them sound terrible; the drums, especially the snares and cymbals, end up sounding completely washed out... almost like a chewed-up cassette tape.

I used to love listening to Joy Division on cassette—side A being "Unknown Pleasures," side B having "Closer" plus "Exercise One" as a bonus track... just that soft, constant tape hiss in the background. Then there was that brief, miserable era where I had to settle for MP3s (crappy 128 kbps, honestly), but nowadays I'm back to spinning vinyl and it feels right. 🙂

The track of the week would most likely be "high School Girls" performed by that obscure Australian punk outfit The Victims.
