Moderating off-topic posts in Feedback & Suggestions ·
restlesscobra24 said:Some mods just shut down a thread entirely if people start veering off track—like how they recently nuked that whole discussion about Donald Trump.

Wouldn't it be way more logical to just punish the people breaking the rules or maybe just delete the specific posts that don't fit?

The way things work now, you aren't actually penalizing the rule-breakers (the ones spamming off-topic stuff); instead, you're basically silencing the people who were actually following the rules—they're the ones who get blocked from participating in the thread.

Honestly, I think the real issue lies in how this whole forum is organized and those rigid rules that seem totally disconnected from reality.
I call it the "natural flow" of a conversation.
If a discussion naturally drifts into an off-topic tangent, it’s honestly pretty lame for moderators to just wipe everything out and hand out warnings—mostly because the forum isn't exactly buzzing with traffic, so the off-topic chatter doesn't bother the users nearly as much as it seems to bother the mods.
And even if things go sideways into off-topic territory, it doesn't stop someone else from eventually bringing the focus back to the main point and pulling everyone else along with them.
It really hurts the smaller threads the most—you know, the ones where there isn't a ton to say—because in those cases, going off-topic is basically just a way to keep the conversation alive before the thread inevitably dies out.
Question for the NASDAQ moderator in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Way to go—you’re really a pro at shutting down threads, aren't you?
I mean, seriously, what did you actually achieve by locking this thing up?
Do you honestly think everyone is just going to migrate over to that other thread and pick up right where we left off?
They won't. Trust me.
So, thanks for absolutely nothing.

Robin Clark said:I’m also venting about how this whole site layout is just straight-up insane—it’s way too cluttered and split into hundreds of subforums, most of which are totally inactive and barely get any traffic.
For instance: Culture & Entertainment > TV (which is broken down into): Series, Unaired US and UK shows, Soaps, Unaired (other series), Reality TV, and Big Brother.
The logic is just non-existent, especially when you see they gave Big Brother its own dedicated section even though there's already a "Reality TV" forum sitting right there.
And it gets even weirder—the "Big Brother" section is split into one single chat thread, one "who is your favorite tenant" thread, and then EVERY SINGLE TENANT gets their own individual thread!!!
It goes without saying that the whole section is basically a ghost town because first, people have to actually hunt through this mess to find what they want, and then they realize they can’t even post freely without some mod deleting or moving their stuff just to fit this convoluted structure—and honestly, nobody has the patience for that kind of headache.

You can't even type something without some power-tripping moderator swooping in to move your reply to what they deem the "correct" topic.
Just last week, I posted in Information Technology > Internet > Web about how the American version of YouTube was recommending videos from overseas instead of local ones
and some nameless moderator immediately moved my thread over to a chat thread. It's been over a week and I haven't seen a single response because that damn chat thread is inactive—there's absolutely nobody hanging out there.
I really don't get this level of control freaking.

Totally with you on that.
I got hassled like that myself over in the mobile phone forum.
They’ve got sections for phone comparisons, Android, and so on, plus a separate thread for every single device.
So, you're looking for a phone, right? Usually, you're just comparing a couple of models, but once you finally decide which one you want and you're already deep in conversation with people, you have to jump over to a completely different thread specifically for that one model just to ask a quick question about it.

The site hangs on me sometimes too, and occasionally it takes forever just to load.
The absolute worst thing that's happened to me so far was when the page just threw an error right as I was finishing up a comment.
By the time the page finally loaded again, my comment was just gone. Vanished.
And then what? You write it all over again? If it's a long post, what are the odds you'll even remember exactly how you phrased everything...

There have even been days where the site just wouldn't open at all for an hour or two..

Casey Bennett said:Moderator posts are meant for managing the thread or dropping their own take on the topic itself.
First off, they aren't supposed to be commenting on the discussion directly—second, any actual input should stay relevant to the debate at hand. Moderators are just regular users too, and those two roles are usually pretty clearly separated.

For example: "Please stop the off-topic chatter" is a formal warning from a mod, and you don't reply to that.

But if a moderator writes, "Man, it's a beautiful sunny day out," on a thread about the weather forecast? Well, obviously people are gonna jump in and chat, especially if it's actually pouring rain outside.

I get where you're coming from.
But honestly, I still feel like there should be a way to respond to those warnings.
Just like what I was trying to say in that other thread.
The way things are going, it makes it look like the mods think they're some kind of absolute rulers of this entire site.
At the end of the day, I don't see why someone would need to dance around an issue just so the other person can save face after messing up.
I'm all about being straight up, and that’s exactly how I gave him my honest response to his—let's call it "gentle"—advice.

Casey Bennett said:@neongull93/">@@neongull93, we didn't actually get into it, at least I don't recall us clashing 🙂
I’m just speaking from the perspective of one of those mobile app mods—you know, the ones where you end up getting flagged by a colleague and you're just trying to explain why things went south. It was totally unnecessary, I agree—if you had just phrased things differently, you probably wouldn't be staring down a warning right now.

Regarding what the moderators think about the rules... honestly, everyone should really just stick to commenting on their own specific sub-forums. Rules can vary wildly from one section to another, kind of like how different departments in a massive company like Amazon have totally different protocols. Personally, I’m pretty happy with our guidelines; they aren't exactly rocket science to follow. And if you look at the facts, there aren't even that many complaints—well, not many of us are complaining, anyway. Usually, when people do gripe, it’s mostly about getting flagged for talking about the moderation itself. But Nick already covered that part.

Hehe, since you brought it up, I thought you were that guy.
I don't buy the idea that you can't comment on moderators. I mean, the second someone posts anything in any thread, they're part of the conversation too—so they shouldn't be treated like they're untouchable.

Matthew Anderson said:Look, since PDFs are such a finicky, specialized beast, the only opinions that actually carry any weight around here are the ones from the folks who spend their days elbow-deep in editing them. This rule isn't some new thing pulled out of thin air, either—it’s been standard practice for over five years now, dating all the way back to the previous management teams. There’s clearly a solid reason why everyone in the industry is on the same page about why this is absolutely necessary.

Look, we aren't about to go around changing the rules just because some other mod or a random user decides they don't like them—unless, obviously, the owner of the site steps in and gives us a direct order to change things up. It’s not like that. Besides, the rule itself isn't some terrifying monster or anything; it literally just says we expect a thread to have a few actual sentences instead of being a total one-liner or just a couple of choppy, half-baked thoughts. Honestly, if we scrapped the rule, I don't see how it would actually improve the quality of our platform at all.

Man, we’ve been doing this for ages—just slamming down topics that are barely even sentences, you know? It's like we just lock them in without giving anyone a second to actually process what was said. Every once in a while, someone might actually put some effort in and spark a thread that stretches out over a few pages, but even then... the second a moderator catches wind of it, boom—thread locked. Just gone.

Look, that’s really the core of the issue right there—it's something we absolutely have to figure out if we're going to move forward.
Look, here's the thing about this whole topic—it’s not actually about how many sentences someone writes or anything like that. Honestly? Just shutting down a thread without even giving it a second thought is just a pretty lousy way to handle moderation. It’s bad business, really.

Look, the rule can definitely stay—but honestly? It shouldn't be some hard-and-fast requirement where you get penalized or blocked from starting a thread if you don't follow it perfectly. That feels a bit much, right? Instead, we should treat it more like a "best practice" or just something that’s highly encouraged. Think of it like a suggestion rather than a strict law—you know, something that makes the community better without being a total headache for everyone involved.
Just because that rule has been sitting there for decades doesn't mean it actually carries any weight—honestly, it’s basically just a relic at this point.

rustydrifter10 said:The mods actually stay pretty on top of things—they know their stuff when it comes to how this place flows, the general vibe of the users, the quality of the threads, all that jazz. Like I was saying before, any real changes around here usually happen in small increments—think more like fine-tuning or adding a layer to something that’s already working, rather than tearing everything down and starting over. Honestly, your take feels a bit too broad and vague... it almost sounds like you're describing a total meltdown or some kind of apocalypse. Personally, I don't see the site being in nearly as bad of shape as your posts make it out to be. Sure, there’s definitely room for improvement—I’m fully aware of that—but we’re constantly working on those tweaks. Perfection is kind of a moving target anyway, since the whole community is always evolving.

Honestly, if you ask me, this whole site is way too obsessed with the rulebook—it’s like they're more interested in policing everyone than actually having a conversation. It feels like any time you try to bring up a perspective that doesn't perfectly align with what the mods or the majority think, they just shut it down immediately. It totally suffocates any real debate, you know? It's like trying to have a deep discussion at a dinner party where one person keeps correcting your grammar instead of actually listening to your point.

Matthew Anderson said:1. You got flagged because you broke a rule specifically set for this subforum—it’s not just a suggestion, it’s literally bolded and enlarged so nobody can miss it.
2. You’re arguing that the rule needs an overhaul to "improve" the board, but none of the site mods are on board with that idea.

To wrap this whole thing up, the mods aren't looking to change anything because we feel the current rule does its job perfectly fine—and honestly, our reasoning comes from the fact that before we implemented it, the discussions here were becoming a total mess.

Look, I don't really care what the specific subforum mods think—it’s about what all the moderators, and honestly, everyone who hangs out in this section or even the entire site, feels is right.
Plus, are you seriously trying to tell me there isn't a single topic worth bringing up that doesn't require at least six sentences to actually make sense?
Does this subforum even serve a purpose? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
rustydrifter10 said:That’s more of an issue for other boards. Here, we can only really talk about and decide on our own space. The current rules are basically just a byproduct of how this community has evolved over time—as the site grows and shifts, the rulebook has to shift too. There are stretches where nothing seems to change much, but looking at the long game, everything evolves. What worked back when there were only a handful of users and way less traffic just doesn't cut it anymore, much like how what works today probably won't be enough for where we're headed down the road. So yeah, we’ll keep tweaking things to make them better.

You keep "promising" improvements or changes down some hypothetical timeline, but I’m just not seeing it. If you ask any moderator, they all seem perfectly happy with the status quo, even though it’s obvious something isn't working right—I mean, people are getting warnings and strikes every single day for even the most trivial stuff.
So, honestly, I just want you mods to actually step up and take a hard look at whether these rules are actually serving us or if they need a total overhaul.
Especially since you guys are the ones handing out the penalties.

From where I'm sitting, it looks like most people are just doing their part by following the rules, while everyone else is just getting swept away.
The whole point of a community like this should be moving forward and improving, not just sticking to a "my way or the highway" mentality.

I haven't been super active here lately, but I've been trying to get back into it recently.
And frankly, you aren't making it easy with all the warnings and closing threads before they even have a chance to turn into actual interesting discussions.
But man, the biggest blow was definitely disabling the search feature.
You guys really need to be transparent with us, because it feels impossible to make progress no matter what you do.

Casey Bennett said:You can find the general site rules here:
Each sub-forum usually has its own specific guidelines, which are pinned at the top and act as an addendum to the main rules. Here are the rules for this specific section:

Off-topic posting is allowed in some areas and strictly forbidden in others. When it is allowed, there are limits, and if it's prohibited, that will always be clearly stated either in the general rules PDF or in the opening post of the thread itself.

Given what seems to be driving this discussion, I can tell you that on the mobile tech board, we allow a little bit of off-topic chatter, but it has to be minimal—it wouldn't make sense to let a thread about a Samsung Galaxy S7 devolve into a debate about Chinese smartphones. Directing users to the appropriate thread is just standard procedure to keep the sub-forum organized, and it's all laid out in the rules. If you feel like there's room for improvement, please feel free to reach out with suggestions.

However, responding with hostility or being vulgar when a moderator makes a standard request to move a topic is going to result in sanctions. Everything can be handled civilly.

It’s not just that, though—I see other people getting hit with warnings every single day.
And as for that argument we had, I wouldn't even take it seriously; it was just a comment that hit the nail on the head regarding how you were handling things, whether you were following the rules or not.

rustydrifter10 said:Look, we don't mind a little off-topic chatter as long as you pivot back to the main point pretty fast—if things get actually interesting or deep, we'll just move that conversation over to its own dedicated thread.

We’ve got the main rules pinned at the top of the forum, and most of our sub-sections have their own specific guidelines right there on the landing page as featured posts. Honestly, common sense and basic etiquette dictate that you should probably give those a quick read before jumping into an argument.

Oh, come on... I've been hanging out on plenty of other forums and none of them felt this restrictive.

Morgan Rodriguez57 said:I mean, why did velvetmaker3 even get flagged? What kind of legendary "subforum rule" did he supposedly break? It’s like... you go to the grievance subforum to complain about a decision, and then you get slapped with a warning just for complaining in the place meant for complaints. Makes zero sense. 🙏

So now we're gonna have political debates happening in the moderator lounge? Great. Just great. -__-

Daniel Ward87 said:Look, every single subforum is its own little ecosystem, right? So yeah, every one has its own specific set of rules. I honestly don't know what kind of weird logic they use to tweak things from time to time, but if you check out the Politics section, the date of the last rule update is right there in the thread title for the rules.

But does it actually say what the old rule was versus the new one? Like, do they give an example or a reason for why they changed it in the first place?

rustydrifter10 said:Any posts flagged as unfair get pulled. And please—don't give me that "it never happens" or "it’s super rare" routine, because:
a) this PDF is practically overflowing with examples of exactly that
b) it actually happens quite a bit, like several times a month on average
c) just because most posts stay up doesn't mean they were earned. Every single post gets an explanation and goes through a review by moderators, super-mods, and admins.

You shouldn't be critiquing mod work scattered all over the different threads—we have an entire PDF dedicated to that, which is exactly what you opened this thread in. Every thread has its own purpose, and every PDF has its own specific focus. This one, "Messages, Complaints, and Feedback," is specifically for moderation issues.

Take a look at the rules in this PDF, because honestly, this kind of back-and-forth is just a waste of breath. If you've got a legitimate issue, lay it out, explain it, and prove it. Rules change here from time to time—sometimes a little, sometimes a lot—to keep up with how the site is running, so you can't really claim "it's always been this way." Changing things constantly without a good reason makes zero sense; it just confuses people and makes running the forum a nightmare. We're always down for constructive suggestions, though.

The bolded part is fine, I guess, but you really should allow for some off-topic talk here and there, otherwise you're just killing the natural flow of conversation.
Like, when I started that thread comparing phones, once I finally decided which one I wanted, I was supposed to go hunt down an existing Android thread or start a whole new thing just to ask two or three quick questions? That feels overkill.

I've compared this situation to dealing with US bureaucracy—you know, where it's so much red tape that you feel like you're losing your mind being sent from one office to another.

Also, point me toward the thread where all the rules and their updates are listed.
If it doesn't exist, make it, because frankly, I'm not taking your word for it.
And if the rules were actually that solid, we wouldn't be seeing this many complaints in the first place.

I'm honestly just asking because it feels like whenever someone tries to appeal a ban, they just get handed some random excuse and the ban sticks regardless.
The rulebook needs a serious overhaul—and seriously, I don't get why there's even a rule against calling out the mods.
The real issue here is the moderation team itself... it feels like they’re totally resistant to change and just refuse to see when things aren't working properly.

Personally, I'm just hoping I don't catch a ban for speaking up about the moderators, since my point is more about the general lack of progress around here.
Just look at the search function—it's been broken or disabled for over a month now.

You can go ahead and lock this thread and give me nothing, or you could actually suggest something that might make this forum better—whether that's tweaking the rules, fixing the layout, or looking at how we're being moderated.
Looking for some clarification on the rules in Feedback & Suggestions ·
I mean, honestly, we really ought to sit down and take a long, hard look at all the rules—just scrub everything and add or cut whatever makes sense for where we're at now.
Maybe just start a new thread and see what everyone else thinks about specific points? If we get some real feedback from the community, we could actually put together an optimal set of guidelines that works for everyone.

You’re gonna end up breaking down when you lose someone close to you.
Look, I’m not quite there yet, but I’m heading that way.
I really value logic and intelligence—that's what I aim for—and honestly, letting emotions run the show feels like the exact opposite of being rational; it's just too unpredictable.

My dad passed away recently.
Everyone keeps telling me he was way too young.
If he had made it, he would’ve been about 50.
At the funeral, man, I was trying so hard to keep it together, but the tears just started flowing... it’s even tougher when you're surrounded by everyone else sobbing, too.
After everything settled, I think I was probably one of the "fastest" ones to just move on with my life.
It’s just that I've accepted death as a fundamental part of living.
And since I'm not a religious person, I don't feel any real need to go visit his grave or anything.

So, yeah—when a situation like that actually hits you, I bet you'll show some emotion.
If even then you don't feel a thing, then you seriously might need to sit down and talk to a therapist.
(I mean, maybe you have a psychopath gene—if that's even a real thing)

Scared to live, ashamed to exist in Psychology ·
Man, it’s like you’re reading my mind right here.
I’m actually two years younger than you, but I’m stuck in the exact same spot.
Sometimes I just sit there wondering if there’s even any point in trying to shake things up—or if I should just ride the wave and hope life eventually decides to get interesting, you know? Like, maybe I’ll finally meet a girl or land a killer job offer and everything will just click.
Right now, I’m pulling in less than $1333, and honestly, I’ll probably just blow it all on random junk because I don't really have the drive to save or invest in anything meaningful.
I can't quite bring myself to pull the trigger on moving abroad, but if what was said above is true, it might be a losing battle. It’s not like I’m out here chasing millions—my goal is just to work fewer hours while still making enough to live a decent, comfortable life.
In the US, finding a job that actually respects a 40-hour work week is basically a unicorn hunt at most companies.

Like the person above said—if you really sit down and weigh everything that's eating at you, you eventually realize you have to change yourself. Otherwise, you’re just going to end up in the same rut, no matter where you move.
Now, I haven't gone out and crunched the actual statistics or anything, so this is just me guessing.
But I know from experience that I used to think everything would magically fix itself once I found a girlfriend.
After thinking about that for a while—and letting that thought loop in my head every single day—I started asking myself: "What if nothing ever changes?"
And then you try to look at yourself through someone else's eyes, and you realize you wouldn't even want to hang out with yourself.

Anyway... enough of the doom and gloom. 🙂
