Dell Precision workstation laptop in IT Support ·
If you're browsing Craigslist, you'll see some folks just stripping their machines for parts because they died, while others are basically selling a laptop that’s on its last legs. You really gotta ask them directly, though, because you can't just assume anything—not everyone is rocking an HP, and even among the HP crowd, the specs vary wildly from one series to the next.

So, what's actually pulling you toward that specific model?
How much RAM do I need? in IT Support ·
Jeremy Fowler43 said:My PC is running on a mere 0.5 GB of RAM, and honestly, it’s become completely unusable. I'm trying to figure out how to determine exactly how many gigabytes I should upgrade to, and also how to identify which DDR standard I'm currently using. Do I actually need to crack open the case and inspect the hardware manually, or is there a more efficient way to find this information via software?

Thanks.

Where are you located? Just download that app Andrew Peterson2 recommended so we can see all your detailed specs, and hey, maybe I could even hook you up with my old one that I don't use anymore since it's definitely an upgrade over yours, even if it is pretty old. 🙂
I just need to double-check if it still works though, since it's been sitting around for a long time.
Fresh Windows installation in IT Support ·
If you’re still feeling a little shaky about it, just head over to YouTube and search for "How to install Windows 10"—watching those tutorials will probably give you the boost of confidence you need! It’s honestly not that complicated at all, though if I'm being totally real with you, I think the biggest headache is probably just hunting down all the right drivers.
Are you seriously working at a sportsbook just because you need the cash???

Look, I’m definitely not a doctor, and even if some MD decided to pop up in this thread, they probably wouldn't be able to do much without seeing the actual data, so you really ought to post your lab results so some professionals can see exactly what tests you've already cleared.
Honestly, everything you just described immediately made me think of https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/thyroid-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20354264 but I guess the specialists have already ruled that out, right???
Man, it’s honestly kind of tough to give you a solid hand here because the app is claiming your processor is missing SSE2 instructions, which is just wild since basically every modern PC from the last decade has those built-in, but then I see right there in your specs that you actually *do* have SSE2, so that can't be the issue at all.

Maybe just try grabbing the absolute latest version of Skype and running the install to see if that weird error finally decides to chill out.
I'm honestly not sure if you've run into this yet, but I just wanted to give you a heads-up just in case it hits you too.
Whether you're rocking an Intel or an AMD setup, I've heard that the newer processors are starting to drop support for those older operating systems, because apparently Microsoft is pushing hard to move away from Windows 7 and 8.

There’s been a lot of talk about how the newer Kaby Lake architectures from Intel and the Zen ones from AMD just won't play nice with them, so you might want to skip the Windows 7 install and just stick with Windows 10 to be safe?

You should definitely double-check on the Dell website first to make sure your specific laptop actually has all the drivers you'll need.
Green spots appearing on my screen in Desktops ·
Why wouldn't it be the monitor??? Like, if there’s some tiny little scorch mark on the image processor chip, couldn't that cause those weird dots to show up???

The very first thing I’d honestly do is just plug the monitor into a different PC to see if it still acts up.

Then I'd check the graphics card, maybe pull it out and try switching over to the integrated graphics if the motherboard supports it.
Best steering wheel bolt for PC racing? in IT Support ·
You can actually snag some wing bolts on eBay.
Something along the lines of this
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i/listing.html?_nkw=wing+bolts&_sacat=0

My biggest headache right now is just figuring out the thickness, because even though you mentioned 8mm, I'm totally tripping over whether those M8 markings are actually what I should be looking for.

You could also grab one with a plastic handle if you want, which honestly makes it look way less like a random hardware store bolt.

I spent forever hunting down an OEM bolt for your steering wheel, but man, I came up completely empty-handed—there’s just nothing out there.
So my brother’s been on this stuff for basically a year now and honestly, you can totally see the hair actually growing back in those bald spots, which is wild, but the catch is that once you stop using it, the growth just quits on you too.

My own hair has thinned out a little bit—nothing super crazy yet, but I’m definitely feeling it—so I was thinking about jumping on some Minoxidil just to get ahead of the game and stop the shedding before it gets bad.

Does anyone know if Minoxidil actually does anything to the healthy hair I've already got left?
Soy Lecithin in Health ·
Chloe Hughes2 said:When it comes to soy, I'm really not convinced it actually boosts sperm counts 😁... I used to take Lecithin while I was studying and I still have a container of it lying around, but I'm not quite sure about what you're saying here... regardless, there isn't any amount of Lecithin that would be considered toxic

Check out this page here

I can't find that other site, though, because I read it ages ago and my memory is just totally shot, so I have no clue where it went.
Soy Lecithin in Health ·
I wasn't totally sure where to drop this one, so I'm just gonna toss it into the Health section, since Lecithin is basically just a supplement you can grab at any CVS or Walgreens.
So, here's the thing—I was reading somewhere that Lecithin actually boosts egg production and increases sperm count, which apparently means guys get way better orgasms too, plus it helps with fertility.

But then, I swear I saw something else saying Lecithin is actually the reason behind infertility? Like, wow, now I'm just super confused about what's actually true.

I would honestly love to hear from some actual pros who really know their stuff when it comes to medications and vitamin supplements.
Hearing loss issues in Health ·
I just stumbled upon this thread and man, I really wish those of us dealing with hearing loss could all just hang out online somewhere, you know? Just a way to swap stories and actually connect.
My name's Mark, and I've been living with profound hearing loss since day one—we're talking about 90dB in one ear and 89 dB in the other.
So, I've had my new gear for about a week now, these Phonak Naida 3 SP models. http://surdoline.ru/images/PHO006166AI.jpg When I first got them fitted, honestly, everything was just a blur of noise and speech sounded totally terrible. I guess the thing is you really have to train your brain to handle a whole new spectrum of sound; these digital devices definitely require some serious getting used to. It kind of takes me back to being a kid, trying to pick through maybe thirty different analog models back then just to find the one that let me hear even a little bit better.

To be real with you guys, my hearing issues hit my social life pretty hard, and I usually end up staying in because when everyone heads out to noisy coffee shops or loud clubs, I just can't make out what anyone is saying. I used to just tag along with my old school friends, but I eventually got tired of the struggle and started preferring just chilling at home.
Now, I'm starting speech therapy once a week over at Suvag in the city to help me get better at navigating life with these aids, and maybe even tweak them if I need to fine-tune how I perceive certain sounds.
Linux or Windows XP? in Software ·
Sam Martin10 said:I'm running Ubuntu 1.8 right now and honestly, I am just so incredibly stoked with it because everything runs super smoothly in a dual boot setup alongside macOS and Windows Vista, which basically means Linux👍 is the way to go
.

I've actually never messed around with a Mac before, so could you please let me know if I'd run into any major headaches trying to get it installed on a standard PC?

wiredstag51 said:so I'm looking at everything right now

and honestly I'm just torn between installing Ubuntu or going with Windows Vista...
I'm leaning toward Vista because I really want that DirectX 10 support, but then again, I've been hearing nothing but amazing things about Ubuntu Linux lately.
But then there's the whole Vista situation too, you know, because I've heard people complaining about how much RAM and CPU power it eats up, like it slows everything down instead of actually making things better...

Can I actually trust Vista not to absolutely wreck my PC, and will my games actually run okay? I'm thinking about doing a dual boot with XP and Vista...

Even though I basically stopped using Windows entirely, I still find myself crawling back to it once a month or so—it kind of fluctuates like that.
If I were you, I'd just stick with XP, mostly because you can actually play both old and new games on it (minus the DirectX 10 stuff), whereas on Vista, you'll be lucky if an older game even launches. Personally, I've found XP to be super stable, and it boots up way faster than Vista ever did.

wiredstag51 said:Alright, so I'm grabbing Partition Magic right now to set up a new partition...

But I've actually got one more thing I wanted to ask about Linux, since you guys were asking me earlier, I'm running version 8.04
that's what you asked me before

And also, can I even run DirectX 10 on it, like does it even support that stuff...?

You can totally just whip up partitions using an Ubuntu LiveCD, and honestly, you'll have all those Windows formats like NTFS and FAT32 ready to go without even needing to install anything, so it's super quick and easy.

Now, about DirectX 10—that's a Microsoft technology, so it isn't built directly into Linux; instead, Linux uses OpenGL, which keeps getting better and better over time. If you're trying to play Windows games that require DirectX 10, you really have to check if Wine (that emulator for Windows programs) can handle it, and since Wine updates basically every two weeks, they're constantly adding new improvements and compatibility for different games. I can't say for sure how it works with DirectX 10 because I don't personally have a graphics card that supports it, and from what I've heard, you're supposed to be able to play DirectX 10 games on Windows Vista, though most Vista users are actually pretty disappointed with how those DirectX 10 games turn out.

So, I've got this 120GB hard drive running my laptop
I'm currently rocking a dual boot setup with Windows Vista and Ubuntu 8.04
I carved out about 20GB for the Linux system itself plus my home partition, which is another 20GB plus a 1GB swap space
Then I've got these two 20GB data partitions formatted as FAT32 just so I can easily grab files from the Windows side, though I'll probably migrate everything over to ext3 down the road once I get settled😁
The rest of the space, about 39GB, is dedicated to Windows Vista.

I gotta say, Vista feels way more bloated than I expected; I don't even have many programs installed yet and I'm already feeling the squeeze on storage.
Honestly, you're much better off going with a dual boot instead of using VMware, because if your Windows installation ever crashes and dies, you don't want your Ubuntu setup to go down the drain with it.
Linux or Windows XP? in Software ·
So, honestly, I’d really suggest just setting up a dual boot with Windows XP and Linux on the same machine, because if you install Linux first and then slap Windows on top, it tends to totally overwrite the Linux bootloader, though you can always fix that mess later if you have to.
Just take your time and really dive into everything Linux can do, you'll love it. 🙂

Tyler Rivera45 said:...if you're looking to play games, then go with XP...

So, look, it turns out Linux isn't really built for gaming, though there are plenty of open-source titles out there if you're into that—stuff like Quake Arena (which actually has versions for Windows and Macintosh too), Tremulous, and Counter-Strike, among others, plus you can usually get your Windows games running through Wine, which is basically this awesome emulator for Windows programs and games.
Linux is just super secure—like, it's totally resistant to viruses and trojans because the system basically demands permission before any program can do anything,
which is such a relief. One thing Windows is seriously missing is having something like Synaptic (for GNOME) or ADEPT (for KDE), which is kind of like those Add/Remove Programs tools in Windows but honestly way better, because as soon as you open it up, you can just check off everything you want to install and it handles the whole process super fast for you.
And most of the time, Linux doesn't even force you to restart after you run an update.
Even big banks love using Linux because it’s so much easier to fix things or push updates while the system is still running.
Plus, Linux partitions don't even need defragmenting.
