Emergency diet needed! in Health ·
Alright, I see you can't seem to function without me. 🙂

The UN diet is fundamentally flawed because it fails to provide the essential nutrients the body requires on a daily basis. Spending your entire day living off nothing but fruit or carbohydrates? It’s an absolute disaster.

Attempting to lose weight without any form of exercise is essentially inviting misfortune. Take that example mentioned above of the woman whose fat was supposedly "holding her bones up"—it wasn't her fat holding her bones up, it was her muscle mass. But that’s actually beside the point. Bones are supported by muscle, plain and simple. The real issue is that with any diet lacking physical activity, the body instinctively begins to burn through muscle tissue before it even touches the fat stores. So, while you think you're dieting, you're actually stripping away your muscle along with the fat, leaving you with no muscle left to support your frame.

That right there is the foundation of the so-called yo-yo effect, where the pounds drop off quickly at first, only to come rushing back even faster because you no longer have the muscle necessary to burn calories efficiently.

Let me walk you through the mechanics behind this yo-yo cycle.

A massive portion of your daily caloric expenditure comes from your muscles (your brain, heart, and lungs consume quite a bit too, but those needs stay relatively constant, so we treat them as a fixed baseline). The more muscle you carry, the more calories you burn in a single day; the less muscle you have, the lower your caloric burn becomes, regardless of how much you move. This is what we call your basal metabolic rate—the number of calories your body burns just staying alive while doing absolutely nothing. When you suddenly crash-diet, your body goes into a state of total panic because it doesn't know what's happening. Tens of thousands of years of evolution have taught the human body that fat stores are a lifeline; having more reserves means a better chance of surviving a harsh winter. So, what happens when you stop moving and start dieting? Your body faces a choice: burn fat or slow down its basal metabolism. Since you aren't being active, your body decides that muscle is an unnecessary luxury—it's just burning heaps of energy while you sit there. Consequently, instead of targeting fat, the body lowers its metabolic rate and starts consuming muscle tissue in tandem with fat. The end result is that you might lose a significant amount of weight, but you've also sacrificed precious muscle and, frankly, your overall health.

Then we hit the second phase of the yo-yo effect. Because your muscle mass has plummeted, your basal metabolism has been drastically slashed, yet you return to your old eating habits. The weight climbs back up much faster than it went down, and you find yourself facing yet another diet. However, you're starting this new attempt with a significantly lower metabolism than you had before because you have less muscle. You try to bring the weight down, but it happens much more slowly; you lose even more muscle and even more health, ending up with an even worse metabolism. It’s a downward spiral that continues until you eventually end up in a hospital bed.

The UN diet isn't healthy. Any weight loss exceeding about one pound a week isn't sustainable or healthy, because it almost inevitably drags your muscle mass down with it.

There is a top-tier thread over in the Recreation & Fitness section titled "how to lose belly fat." Anyone serious about losing weight should head over there and read the entire thread from start to finish; there is a wealth of genuinely useful information in there.
Plasma Donation in Health ·
The thing you have to realize is that plasma regenerates pretty quickly, mostly because it’s essentially just water. When you donate blood, you're also giving up red blood cells, which take a much longer time to fully replenish in your system.

Andrew Clark8 said:Plenty of exercise, eating regular meals, having snacks in between them. But honestly, that advice just didn't do much for me. They even suggested I spend a whole month eating nothing but my favorite things—tons of mayo, pasta, fried food, chips, you name it. Even then, I saw zero results. It really all comes down to why you actually need to gain weight and what the underlying reason for being thin is in the first place.

Well, you certainly received some top-tier advice there; probably the fastest way to land yourself in the ER with a heart attack. You have to eat plenty, sure, but it has to be high-quality, healthy food.
Ordering medication from overseas in Health ·
If there were a way to ask this elsewhere, I probably wouldn't be bothering everyone here...

There are plenty of online supplement retailers out there, like Swanson, and you can find them in a heartbeat just by using Google. You basically just scan through them until you find whichever one offers the best deal—once you factor in the shipping costs, of course.

He’s talking about vitamins—you know, those everyday supplements you can just pick up off the shelf without needing a prescription from your doctor...

I ended up ordering everything from http://www.swansonvitamins.com/

On their site, you can grab the Twinlab mega Twin ep 13 for just about $23, whereas if you try to find it locally here, you’re looking at over $45. I just paid with my credit card and the whole thing showed up via USPS in about a week. Of course, you have to factor in the shipping costs and customs fees—for a six-bottle order, I ended up paying an extra $50 for delivery and $67 in duties. Even with those added costs, it's still a massive steal compared to the local prices; on average, each bottle worked out to roughly $42.
Thomas Bishop64 said:Taylor Swift, I feel like I’ve finally found my tribe on this forum. Just as a quick update, I’ve swapped out heavy dinners for lighter meals for about ten days now, and whenever those massive cravings hit, I just stick to some fruit. I’ve already noticed I’m down just under two pounds.
Even though I’m pretty happy with the progress, I know I’m still being way too sedentary. After sitting for a long stretch, my whole body feels completely stiff when I finally stand up. It’s almost like I have this intense, restless energy bottled up inside me that just needs an outlet. I’ve actually been thinking about taking up dance classes in my spare time... To be honest, I have a larger frame, so the extra weight isn't even that noticeable. I don't even really care about the little rolls around my waist—they've actually become kind of cute to me—but I really do need to find a way to burn off all this pent-up energy.
🙂

Honestly, any kind of movement is a win. Just getting started is half the battle. Give it a few months, and you’ll actually start looking forward to it. Go take a dance class, hit the pool, or grab a bike and ride it as often as you can (though, granted, you might want to wait until spring 🙂) and so on. Since we're heading into winter, dancing is probably your best bet. You’ve got everything from Latin and hip-hop to jazz and ballet; I’m sure there’s something out there that clicks with you.
Secondhand smoke issues in Health ·
Anonymous said:What exactly is forcing your hand here? 🤷

Right, so I guess if some idiot decides to light up on a subway car, my solution is just to hop off? Or if someone even more oblivious starts smoking in the non-smoking section of a Starbucks and refuses to stop, am I supposed to just walk out?

And you always hear that classic line, "Why does one cigarette bother you so much?" Honestly, it’s pure stupidity. If they want to smoke, they can do it at home where they aren't making everyone else miserable.

Nancy Price72 said:Find another way to vent your frustrations; nobody's going to kill you by sitting in a smoky room for an hour. Honestly, I think it's the urban lifestyle that's actually doing the damage. If you're so concerned, go protest against traffic congestion or factory emissions instead... look, I used to be a smoker myself, so I'm hardly one to complain about the habit.☕

Oh, I just love this kind of logic. It’s like saying, "Hey, if a car is heading straight for you and you can't dodge it, why bother complaining?" Would you rather:

a) get hit at 12 miles/h
b) get hit at 31 miles/h

Sure, you might survive either scenario, but that doesn't mean there isn't a massive difference between the two. We can't exactly escape the smog in the city—that's just the reality of living in a major American metro, and we all deal with it. But that doesn't mean I have to go out of my way to poison myself even further.

Protein Supplements in Health ·
Eat plenty. And obviously, don't eat junk. You definitely need the protein, but please, stay away from those various mass gainers—you’ll just end up with a massive pile of fat. Stick to real food instead, like meat, vegetables, fish, and things like that.

How to lose 3 lbs? in Health ·
That’s actually more suited for the fitness subreddits—there are already dozens of threads covering that exact ground—but no harm in bringing it up here. If you want to see some real progress, try swapping out those Cocoa Puffs in the morning for some plain old oatmeal, and maybe cut back on the heavy carbs at night. I mean, skip the bread, potatoes, and pasta for dinner, and stick to things like cheese, chicken, fish, or just a big salad with some low-calorie veggies instead. A little bit of regular exercise wouldn't hurt either, either...

Trust me on this one, you’d probably have to grind for at least twenty years just to be a shadow of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Building that kind of muscle requires a massive amount of calories and relentless training. Honestly, you should head over to Bodybuilding.com; there's way more useful information available there than I could ever hope to squeeze into a single post.

@briskjackal5 - from what I understand, the body can actually convert excess protein into glucose, which then gets stored away as fat...

Also, does anyone happen to know how much protein is actually in a decent serving of chicken breast?

Just a heads-up, those nutrition databases don't seem to play nice with Firefox; you'll probably have to fire up Internet Explorer to get them to load properly.
My eyes are practically popping out of my head from searching, but I still haven't managed to track it down...
Maybe just put them on the Glavas diet... though I should mention that one is a bit unconventional, since there's actually a tiny 10% chance you could lose 100% of your body weight...

So, what, just eating fruit all day long? That sounds pretty ridiculous to me. Honestly, if there's one major flaw with the UN diet, it's that approach right there.
