Where is the latest issue? 🤔 It’s been lagging for a few weeks now.
At first, I figured they were just holding back because of the championship race, but this much of a delay...

It's running about a week behind schedule.

Hmm, Silverstone is actually the weekend before. It makes me wonder what the damage would be for a rental car and a place to stay for eight days ☕
I suppose we could cut back on the dining out a bit—maybe just hit up a pub here and there? Or, who knows, maybe we could just crash in the car instead of booking anything at all 🙂

mistybear87? Are we doing this?

I am definitely in. 👍

Aerodynamics is a tricky business, isn't it?

Alright, where on earth did you dig that up? 🙂

You can tell just by looking at the plane that it's a Lotus 79, but how can anyone be certain? Was this part of some official testing phase or what?

The legendary FW08B—I actually have a scale model at home (1:43 scale, I think that's as big as they get)—which Williams tested back in 1982.
There have been quite a few attempts throughout history to build a six-wheeled car, but none were truly successful, save for the Tyrrell one. Even then, that ended rather ignominiously when Goodyear refused to develop smaller tires. In today's aero-driven era, we might see more significant results, though the logistical headaches in the pits would be massive.😬
As far as I know, only one prototype was ever built, and it's currently sitting in the Williams museum.👍

It was driven a handful of times, including at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it immediately shattered the track record.🙏🙏🙏
A similar fate befell the Williams CVT transmission; it was banned before it even hit the track. Thankfully for everyone else, it stayed that way.🙏🙏🙏

I used to be absolutely obsessed with the Sauber Petronas livery, but during the 2007 season, there was this Honda scheme that just really spoke to me. It had that Live Earth vibe, you know?

There’s actually one even better...

IndyCar running an extra 300 RPM on top of its usual 800 horsepower
(http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....page_number=13)

Back in 1988, Ferrari ran a rather intriguing little experiment over at Honda
They took the MP4/4 and outfitted it with a fifth wheel—purely for measurement purposes, of course—along with a data acquisition unit hooked up to that wheel.

The car started from a standstill, and for every 6.2 miles mph increment, they clocked the distance traveled and the elapsed time.
Unfortunately, due to some logistical constraints, they couldn't run a full quarter-mile test.

Here are the numbers they pulled:

[FONT=Verdana, Arial] 0-10 0.7m 0.5s
0-20 2.3m 0.8s
0-30 4.1m 1.0s
0-40 6.6m 1.3s
0-50 10.0m 1.5s
0-60 14.3m 1.8s
0-70 19.5m 2.0s
0-80 25.3m 2.3s
0-90 31.5m 2.6s
0-100 38.9m 2.8s
0-120 52.6m 3.3s
0-140 77.7m 3.9s
0-150 86.4m 4.2s
0-160 98.8m 4.4s
0-180 125.2m 5.0s
0-200 159.4m 5.6s

Wouldn't it be even more fascinating to see something like this with today's tech?

InTruthWeTrust said:Are you thinking of... say, NASCAR or IndyCar? 😳 To be fair, they really are lagging behind when it comes to aerodynamics.👎 But just look at those engines—they’re so much more powerful than Formula 1! 👍
Could you walk me through... specifically regarding the last couple of seasons... how the V8s used by the top teams compare to those restricted V10s? How does that horsepower actually manifest in one versus the other? And how is it possible for a V10 to end up being weaker?😕

Where are you getting the idea that they're more powerful?
I don't have the exact specs in front of me, but I highly doubt they've got more juice; those late-era V10 engines were pushing north of 980 hp, whereas these V8s are likely sitting right around or just over 800.

When it comes to the power gap between a V8 and a restricted V10, you have to look at what we call the power curve and the torque curve (check out the examples below). Both curves are plotted against RPM, which means both power and torque are entirely dependent on how fast the engine is spinning.
That’s why you’ll often see a spec like 154 BHP @ 6300 RPM (meaning 154 horsepower at 6300 revolutions per minute).

Peak power doesn't always hit at the absolute redline; it usually peaks somewhere near the redline, depending on the specific car and engine setup.

With Formula 1 engines, once they capped those V10s at 16,700 RPM (??), they essentially lopped off a massive chunk of that curve—specifically the highest part—so the engines simply became less powerful.

Here are two examples, a gasoline engine and a diesel:

Ford Focus 2.0L
Power: 138BHP / 103kW @ 6000 rpm (red curve)
Torque: 190Nm @ 4100 rpm (blue curve)

image

Ford Focus 2.0L Diesel
Power: 90HP / 67kW @ 4000 rpm (red curve)
Torque: 205Nm @ 1750 rpm (blue curve)

And as a final thought, here is a simulation of the General Motors engine from 2006 (it isn't official data, just a simulation, but it should be close enough).

silverwolf26 said:Man, this one is just brutal... Honestly, looking at the grid this season, nobody has really managed to stand out or show any real consistency. It’s been pretty underwhelming all around. The only thing that’s actually caught my eye has been the Ford—at least with them, you can actually see some progress being made. It’s become a bit of a personal obsession of mine lately.👍

It feels like that first General Motors car was just painted over in those old colors, much like what we're seeing with this year's model. Doesn't it just feel a bit repetitive?
That was really just a showpiece at the Silverstone race, wasn't it? It’s such a shame they didn't actually pull it out for the main event. One can't help but wonder what might have happened if they had actually put it to the test in the heat of the competition. 😢

Heading to the Monaco race? in Formula 1 ·

I'll be up that way during that time working on a feature story for CNN, so I was hoping to include some shots of the fans and maybe grab a few of their comments.

Unfortunately not, but if you end up going to Silverstone, I'll see you there. 👍
Formula 1 car back at the Nürburgring in Formula 1 ·
Alex Martinez11 said:It’s practically impossible to host a Formula 1 race there. You’d need a small army of marshals just to watch every single corner, and if someone crashes, you'd probably need ten safety cars on standby. Maybe they'll pull it off one day, but if I were running Formula 1, I'd organize it like this:
This race would be a standalone event in the calendar, held mid-season with three-week breaks both before and after. The winner gets 20 points, second gets 15, third gets 10, and then we drop by 2 points for everyone else. Every driver who actually finishes the race walks away with at least one point.
I'm fresh out of ideas... throw yours in the comments!

There is absolutely no way that could ever happen.
For starters, the entire Nürburgring track would need brand-new asphalt for something like this to work.
Then you have the issue of the surrounding infrastructure; I’m not even convinced the current pit facilities could meet modern Formula 1 standards today.
Crowd control would be another massive headache, not to mention whether people would even want to sit there watching a car fly past every six minutes for maybe seventeen laps?

Formula 1 at the Nürburgring is a thing of the past, and it’s going to stay that way for quite a while. Maybe one day it becomes feasible, but certainly not right now.
Entering the Box in Formula 1 ·
Back at Donington in '93, I remember Prost had to make about seven different trips to the Box because the track conditions were just all over the place—it was constant rain, then bone dry, then rain again, then dry...

Racing history has definitely seen its fair share of chaotic scenarios like that; let me see if I can dig up some specific stats on it.
