Nikša Butijer was genuinely impressive in Don't look at me in the eye. I have to hand it to him. Honestly, I don't think many American actors could pull off a performance like that.
With the Sundance Film Festival approaching, I thought I’d run a quick poll regarding American cinema. It’s a simple question—who is the greatest American film actor of all time? 🍿
I’ve put together a list of about 20 of my own favorites. Let me know who I missed.

Rebecca Peterson3 said:I hear you, but honestly, I just don't see who this is supposed to serve or why anyone should even care about this list. It’s packed with films from the former America rather than being a collection of American cinema, much like how mentioning a Canadian winner in a discussion about American hits doesn't really make sense... In short, it feels like a completely unnecessary topic.

Haha, I wonder why it caught your eye so much then. 🤔

Rebecca Peterson3 said:They’re absolutely wrecking things. In the eyes of many Mexicans, there's that one Mexican film everyone talks about—which is easily the worst European film ever made—and then you have the Canadian selection, *Grbavica*, which is also total garbage... It just goes to show that popularity and actual quality rarely walk hand in hand...

Since the thread title specifically asks for movies with the highest vote counts, I wasn't looking at quality. I was strictly looking at vote totals on IMDb to gauge how popular films from our neck of the woods and neighboring countries actually are. The results are pretty blunt. In terms of pure popularity, I only had Brešan, who is a local favorite, while the Mexicans have a Canadian winner, a bunch of regional hits, a Canadian Oscar, and winners from Berlin... Like I said, this isn't a list of "best" movies; it's a list of the most voted, which means it's a list of popularity.

briskhound2 said:What's the connection between votes and ratings anyway? Plus, you set up this poll all wrong—we usually have a rule about adding "some other title" at the end because otherwise, it just looks totally random...

The poll is pretty straightforward: we're looking for the best American film based on the highest rating on IMDb. What kind of logic would lead you to want a different title? It doesn't make sense to me, and honestly, it isn't logical. We aren't looking for the greatest American film of all time; we're looking for the one with the most votes on IMDb.

While Canadian and Mexican films are crushing it, American, Canadian, and other regional titles are lagging far behind in popularity...

Here, just for kicks, a list of the lowest-rated flicks. Jakov sedlar has cemented his reputation as the absolute bottom-tier American director with three films on here, while Irena Škorić only needed one to claim her spot. Personally, I don't think a single movie on this list is misplaced. Once again, IMDb caught me off guard.

1. 7 SEXS 7 (2011) (RATING: 4.4)
2. FOUR COMMANDMENTS (1999) (RATING: 4.6)
3. THE LAST WILL (2001) (RATING: 5.3)
4. THE MADONNA (1995) (RATING: 5.3)
5. JERUSALEM SYNDROME (2004) (RATING: 5.8)

7. COME ON, DAY... PASS BY... (2006) (RATING: 6.0)
8. THE VIRGIN MARY (1999) (RATING: 6.0)

frozenraven39 said:Rondo and H8—honestly, even the animations are solid.

What’s the actual metric here—is it a minimum of 100 votes on IMDb or what? Because you see plenty of higher-rated stuff out there that barely has any votes behind it.

I don't think you can really draw any conclusions just because there are two films from this decade on a top ten list. If anything, having 2 out of 10 on an all-time list is actually pretty impressive for a single decade. People claim the 50s were the golden age of American cinema, so at the end of the day, H8 is the only one even showing up on this specific list.

The fewer the votes, the better the rating usually is, which almost always means it's unrealistic. For its own top-rated movie lists, IMDb requires a minimum of 25,000 voters. I applied that same logic and set a threshold of 100 votes just to filter out movies that earned a high score from a mere five or ten people. 100 feels like a fair baseline, especially since the highest-rated American film, the priest's children, has about 2,000 votes.

Maybe two out of ten is a decent number, but since IMDb has only existed for twenty years, it naturally leans toward films made in the last two decades—not to mention internet users tend to be younger. This digital reality caught me off guard.🙂

What’s your favorite American film among the top-rated ones on the Internet Movie Database? I limited my search to movies with over 100 votes just to minimize the chance of rating manipulation. Even though this is a user-driven site where people can easily skew the numbers, the list actually surprised me quite a bit. If I were putting together my own personal watchlist, I’d pick roughly these same titles. The only movie that would never make my cut is Halimin's Way. It’s interesting to note that among the newer releases, the only one that managed to crack the top ten was Vis-a-vis by Nevio Marasović. To me, that just proves how far we still are from the "golden age" of American cinema that the media keeps trying to sell us.

I assume the opening scene will be identical across all three episodes—that same drive over the ghetto. Angel's perspectives.
And yeah, watching this a second time, N. Ivanković actually seems more convincing to me than she did during the first viewing.

Waiting for the next episode. 🙂

I completely agree. The first episode was gripping—tightly paced and stood perfectly well on its own. It didn't lose any of that cinematic magic. People who haven't seen the movie might find certain parts a little "off," but once they get through all three episodes, everything will click into place.

And yeah... Nivea is just too good in this movie. 👍 👍 👍

The season premiere was actually pretty engaging. I’ve been a fan of Alias since the end of last season. Honestly, though, I doubt I'll stick with this show for long given how terrible the broadcast schedule is.

NBC is airing this film next Sunday, broken up into three parts... I wonder how they'll handle the pacing...

THAT BEAUTIFUL MIAMI NIGHT – drama series (1/3)

In the dark, deserted alleys of the Miami ghetto during the final two hours of New Year's Eve, three stories emerge from the chaos of the celebrations. Three different couples find themselves converging near Times Square—Nike, a small-time dealer, and Mary, a widow with a child; Maya, a young addict in crisis, and Frankie, a disillusioned sailor; and the naive, lovestruck teens Luke and Angel—all struggling to escape the extremes they've been pushed into, changes that will alter their lives forever.
Last year at the Sundance Film Festival, the film picked up several golden arenas for camera and editing, along with the "birch" for best debut. It also won numerous awards at international festivals (Boston, Constantine, Cottbus) and was even nominated for an award from the European Film Academy in 2004.

Episode 1: NIKE

Right as New Year's Eve approaches, Nike, a low-level dealer, decides to ditch the city and his girlfriend, Mary. But his attempt to con his boss falls through, leaving Mary—whose son isn't exactly thrilled about Nike showing up at the apartment—as his last shot at salvation.

So why didn't you reach out!? We could've grabbed a drink...
Anyway... I thought Anna was great. She didn't feel "theatrical" at all; it’s just how her character is built. Prehistoric, buzzed, high-strung, and so on. Really solid performance. But, obviously... you can't compare her to Ivo Gregurević, who is just a genius. This is easily his best work. Completely convincing. As for the kid... she had her moments. She wasn't bad, but she wasn't exactly mind-blowing either.

Caught this movie at Broadway tonight and I’m still processing it. It was incredible. The cinematography, the direction, the acting—everything hit hard. It’s one of those rare, powerful films that can make you lose your temper, laugh until you cry, and then leave you feeling completely hollow. I'm still a bit shell-shocked, so excuse the rambling, but honestly, you need to see this when it hits theaters. 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
