Intel Core i5 overheating and loud fan issues in IT Support ·
The side and top fans seem to be pulling in plenty of cool air, but I’m honestly not even sure about this front one. Since it’s positioned right at the bottom of the case, and there’s such a wide gap between the front panel and where the fan actually sits... plus, the mesh on the front is so open that I can barely tell if it's even pulling air in or pushing it out.
Intel Core i5 overheating and loud fan issues in IT Support ·
Hey there,

So, about ten days ago, I picked up a new processor along with a motherboard—specifically an Intel Core i5.

The stock cooler is being incredibly loud (like, honestly, it’s not normal) even during basic stuff like browsing on Safari or just watching movies in BS Player, let alone when I actually try to run some games. It seems to behave totally fine when I'm just sitting at the desktop, though.

Inside the case, I've got three 12cm fans positioned at the front, the side, and the top. There's definitely cool air moving around them—the side one is right by the graphics card, and the top one is just above the CPU—but that tiny 5x5 cm area immediately surrounding the CPU cooler feels insanely hot. As soon as I pop the side panel off the computer, everything cools down instantly, and the cooler finally quiets down.

Should I just grab a new cooler, or is my case just poorly designed? Maybe it lacks airflow, or maybe I've got the fans set up wrong? I guess I'm just not sure what's actually going on here. 🤦
Charging issues in Laptops ·
Hey everyone, I recently picked up an HP notebook 15, but I'm running into some weird issues. When I plug it in, it doesn't seem to recognize the charger at all, so the battery isn't actually charging. It’s strange because the charging light glows white when it's plugged in, but then once I actually boot it up, the light turns red during the charging process...

Also, earlier today, I got a system error message saying the cooling system wasn't working, though it hasn't popped up again since then...

On top of all that, Windows has been acting incredibly sluggish lately when it tries to boot up...🤦

I was wondering, is there really a "best" option here, or is everything more or less the same? How much does the bus width actually matter in the long run?
If I’m remembering things right, the bit depth basically dictates how much memory the graphics card ends up using, right?
So, I guess... would it be a better move to go with a 1GB card that has a 256-bit bus, or is a 2GB card with a 128-bit bus actually the way to go?

So, I'm just looking for a decent, everyday PC for surfing the web, playing some games, and watching movies.
I'm definitely not hunting for some beastly high-end gaming rig right now—I know there's nothing special you can get for that kind of money these days.
But, I guess, what would be the best value I could possibly squeeze out of a build?

Hey everyone 🙂

I'm looking for some help putting together a build around the $3,000 mark--$1133
I'd prefer to go with an AMD setup if possible, mostly because they offer those 24-month financing plans through Affirm, which would make things a lot easier for me to manage... though I'm totally open to other brands if there's a better deal out there with similar payment options

Just the tower, no monitor needed
thanks in advance
When should I expect money sent via money order on a Friday afternoon to actually arrive?
If it helps, the transfer is from the University of Chicago to Washington, D.C.

So, I was hanging out at a buddy's place earlier... we pulled the graphics card out, cleaned off the cooler, swapped out the thermal paste, and put everything back together. Still the exact same story.

It won't even boot into Windows, and trying to use Safe Mode is basically impossible. The resolution is all messed up, and there are these green vertical lines streaking across the entire screen along with white patches. I didn't catch a photo of it, unfortunately, and honestly, it's kind of hard to describe. It’s just total chaos on the monitor.

The browser won't open, the resolution settings won't open—nothing really opens. Well, technically you can click the browser, but I don't even know how to explain what happens; it's like it isn't even there. Basically, using the internet is totally impossible because the interface just... disappears.
The icons are missing, and when I right-click, I mostly just get empty bars popping up. I did manage to spot that little red Intel driver icon, though. When I clicked it, a notification popped up saying the drivers aren't installed on this computer (my friend mentioned he actually uninstalled them himself while in Safe Mode). But how am I supposed to get them back? Or is this really the end of the road for the card? I told him I thought it was dead, but I'm still hoping maybe there's some kind of solution, though I guess maybe not.

Long story short, I can't reinstall the drivers through the usual way.

And I'm wondering, what actually causes a GPU to fail like this? It's only two years old, and back when it was bought, it was actually a pretty decent card.
I never even tried overclocking it.

Could it be lack of maintenance or dust buildup? Or something else? Because, I don't know, two years feels like a really short lifespan to me.

Do you think cleaning out the GPU and swapping the thermal paste might help?

p.s. A buddy mentioned he keeps getting display driver errors... does that mean the issue might actually be driver-related after all?

So, I guess it's probably not an issue with the drivers?

Larry Ortiz5 said:Alright, I guess it could just be a driver issue, or maybe the graphics card is failing, or even a glitch with the monitor itself. But since everything looks fine when you boot into Safe Mode, we can probably rule out the monitor. That leaves us with two main possibilities...

No, no—it’s actually looking exactly the same on the screen even when I'm in Safe Mode.

Alright, I'll give that a shot. To be honest, this rig used to be mine; I sold it to a buddy of mine, and it ran flawlessly for me for about a year, and it's been working just fine for him for a year now too, without any hiccups.

Here’s what’s inside:
Motherboard: Asrock 970DE3/U3S3
Processor: Intel Core i3, socket AM3
PSU: Zalman 500-GS PSU, 500W
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB, Serial ATA III, 7200 rpm,
2x4 GB RAM Crucial, 1600MHz,

And the questionable GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX, 1GB GDDR5 256bit, HDMI + Single Link

Hey everyone 🙂

So, a buddy of mine is running into a bit of a headache here 🙄

Basically, whenever he tries to boot up Windows, the whole system just keeps auto-restarting before it can actually load. He can only get in if he uses Safe Mode, which makes me think there might be some kind of issue with the graphics card or maybe just a messy driver situation. The screen ends up looking like this

http://prntscr.com/5zah15

I guess... is there any way to actually fix this, or is he looking at a total Windows reinstallation?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give

Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
Timothy Kim60 said:Maybe try taking about 15-20% off whatever you originally paid on your receipt. I guess it might be a bit of an oversimplification—since hardware prices just naturally tank over time anyway—but maybe check out some sites like PriceGrabber to see what the current retail price is for those parts (if they're even still available). Then just shave a little more off, since you're selling used gear.

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search.php?tp=...hlon+II+X3+450

By the way, if you're selling this just to build a whole new rig, you might want to think twice, because you could probably just keep most of this setup.

No, I'm not selling this to buy a new PC.
Regarding the components themselves, excluding the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and webcam, I paid exactly 4 $0.00 at Best Buy

The webcam, mouse, and keyboard don't really cost much, and honestly, the monitor probably isn't worth more than $400$167 used.

This whole debate about who’s better between you guys and the Navy is honestly pretty minor compared to those online mobs fighting over whether the Tornado or the Funcut would win in a showdown🤦

I guess I have to agree with you there 😉
