J.C.V.D. (2008) in Movies ·
This definitely deserves its own thread. Honestly, alongside massive blockbusters like "Indiana Jones," "The Dark Knight," and "Hulk 2," this is the only small flick that actually caught my eye. It’s not even because I’ve been a van Damme fan since I was a kid; it's just that from what I can tell, this looks like something totally different from the usual stuff we expect when JCVD is on screen.
People have never taken Van Damme seriously—not as an actor, not even as a person. He was lightyears away from reaching the level of someone like Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger. To be fair, he didn't exactly give anyone a reason to take him seriously given the kind of action flicks he used to churn out, but honestly, he knows that himself. It looks like something finally clicked in his head, and now he’s trying to pivot and show the audience a more serious side. He’s gone on record saying he's done with crappy movies and that he's over the endless cycle of fighting films; those old "vi / bam thank you van Damme" days are behind him. That's why he passed on roles in things like Street Fighter 2 or Rush Hour 3. He’s actually been attempting this serious rebrand for the last five or six years with movies like Replicant, In Hell, Wake of Death, and especially Until Death. Even though they're technically action genre films, most of them lean way harder into drama than stunts. Take Until Death, for example—there aren't even any fight scenes. His performance as a cop dealing with substance abuse, whiskey, and family issues actually earned him a ton of solid reviews, and the film itself is being called the best work of his career. He’s keeping that momentum going with this incredibly weird and interesting project: the comedy J.C.V.D.
But before you guys start throwing shade, you might want to get the facts straight on this project...

So, we're looking at a semi-biographical flick here. It’s a mix of Jean-Claude Van Damme's actual life and some pure fiction, featuring him playing himself. It's basically a self-parody where he takes shots at his own roller coaster of a career—everything from those rough early days and jumping into big-budget studio flicks to the messy stuff like drug and alcohol issues, losing his A-list status, divorces, getting mocked by the media, and even dealing with losing kids. On top of all that, this might actually be the first time he's speaking his native language on screen. Also, pretty wild detail: he did this one for free. Didn't take a single cent. The plot goes something like this...

So, Van Damme plays some washed-up action star (himself) who’s totally fed up with Hollywood and all his flops, so he decides to head back home to Belgium. Steven Seagal just snatched his role right out from under him, he's broke, and to top it all off, he's fighting his ex-wife for custody of his son. He hits the shops right after leaving the airport, only to have every single one of his credit cards declined.
At the same time, some lawyer calls him up, threatening to drop him as a client if he doesn't cough up his fees immediately. Van Damme tries to get his manager to front him some cash until his next gig, but right when he heads to the bank to grab the money, he gets caught in the middle of an armed robbery and a massive shootout. Before long, the cops and SWAT teams swarm the scene, and everyone starts treating Van Damme like the kidnapper instead of a victim. The whole thing basically turns into a total "Dog Day Afternoon" situation.

What’s going to shock people is how much buzz this thing has generated online. People are actually mentioning Van Damme in magazines like Empire and on web portals that haven't breathed his name in a decade. He even did an interview with MTV recently. Most importantly, the film premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival and absolutely crushed the critics. There’s a real shot this could be his first theatrical release in nearly ten years—even if it’s just a limited run, it’s still a massive step up from straight-to-video trash. Online, the consensus is split: it’s either going to be the best Van Damme film ever made or an absolute pile of garbage. Personally, I'm betting on the former. Either way, he’s totally outclassing Steven Seagal, who puts out five movies a year.

To wrap things up, I'll just quote aintitcool.com

I have no idea how good this movie will be, how good Van Damme will be in it or if it will really make us see him in a new light. But man, I hope he knocks everybody on their ass. I hope it gets nominated for best foreign language film at the Academy Awards, wins a special jury prize for awesomeness at Cannes and creates a resurgence in the splits and fake Cajun accents around the world. I love it when a guy like Van Damme, who excels in a lowbrow art and gets made fun of left and right, really comes through and surprises everybody. I hope that's what he's about to do.

If not, well, in the tradition of Chance Boudreaux's mom, he took a chance. Give him credit for that.

transporter III in Movies ·
Jason Statham is pretty much the last true action hero with actual charisma left, especially since Bruce Willis is mostly retired from the gunfights these days. He’s back as Frank Martin in this explosive third installment of his hit series— "Transporter".
The first two flicks were just pure, fun, mindless action with that over-the-top comic book vibe. They had that specific charm you only found in those late 80s and early 90s movies starring Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Willis, Seagal, and van Damme—stuff you just don't see anymore.
Basically, you aren't supposed to take T1 or T2 seriously. You just sit back, turn off your brain, and enjoy the car chases, the fights, the sweet rides, and the gorgeous women...
It looks like "Transporter III" isn't going to change the formula at all 🙂. One thing is different: Louis Leterrier isn't directing this time. He moved on to tackle The Incredible Hulk, but it seems like Olivier Megaton is doing a solid job stepping in... though we'll have to actually watch the movie to be sure.

Like I said before... this third one looks like just another fun, mindless action flick packed with comic book exaggeration. Can't wait. 😁😁🙏🙂👏🙂

Frank Moore4 said:Those are the suits I was talking about a few posts back. We haven't actually seen them on screen yet, though they were mentioned in the book. Basically, every soldier jumps into orbit and then drops through the atmosphere like some kind of Transformer.

Anyway, I don't buy the idea that this movie is going to be a total cheapskate production. Word is the budget hit around $20 million.

Every recent Seagalov flick has a $20M budget too, so you tell me how that looks.😉🤣

I bet they blew that whole $20 mil just trying to make the effects look decent, but judging by the trailer, the directing and framing look pretty trashy and low-budget...
We'll know for sure once we actually sit down and watch it.

We can't deny the female casting is actually solid here.😁

I don't buy it... even from the trailer, this looks cheap and low-budget, unlike the second one. For a small budget, the sequel actually looked surprisingly good... it felt like a movie like "Assault on Precinct 13," where you have a group—in this case, soldiers—trapped in a building fighting off bugs. Plus, they added that creepy twist where the bugs take over human bodies... so who's infected? It’s a decent flick if you judge it as a B-movie, and honestly, it stands out from most other B-movies, even if it doesn't touch the original. But this third trailer? Looks like straight-up C-grade garbage. Everything feels cheap and static... I'm not holding my breath.

Sorry, but I disagree... none of this is actually trash (except maybe 10,000 BC) if you just view them as pure entertainment, which is what his movies are meant to be. If you can't handle watching Will Smith mess with Martin Lawrence while they take down drug dealers in some high-octane action flick, that's on you. Honestly, if you don't enjoy stuff like that, why even bother watching his movies? It's pretty stupid to sit through something you know you aren't going to like.

But they did have a wild Connery, a clueless Cage in his element... and Hans Zimmer.😁

LOL...the first one is miles away from being trash...sure, maybe those "Melrose Place" looks are a bit distracting, but it’s top-tier sci-fi action and honestly one of the last solid Verhovenov flicks...
The second one holds its own for a B-movie...visually, it actually looks pretty slick...but that third one? Looks cheap as hell and feels totally static...

Here’s my personal top 3 Michael Bay ranking...

1. The Rock
2. Armageddon
3. Bad Boys

In those movies, he absolutely nailed what he does best: pure entertainment and massive action. Say what you want, but when it comes to action, Bay is a total camera virtuoso... I mean, the guy didn't just pick up those tricks from Woo and his crowd by accident.😁

Bad Boys 2 might be a bit over the top, but as raw action, it works. Pearl Harbor is way too slow and sappy, even if the destruction scenes look killer. The Island is probably his most serious project with an actually interesting plot that tries to go deep but fails to land... a director like David Fincher definitely would've pulled it off. As for Transformers... it's fun, but it isn't nearly as good as people claim... definitely not Bay's best work.

1. Universal Soldier
2. Independence Day
3. Stargate

Though, I have to admit, I actually enjoyed "The Island." It’s a far superior film compared to Armageddon.

Not in a million years... Armageddon is peak Hollywood entertainment... even with all that hype about the San Francisco Bay stuff, nothing tops Armageddon... Armageddon and The Rock...😁

William Brown12 said:Hey everyone, does anyone happen to know the title of the song from Armageddon, specifically during that scene where Harry is playing golf?
If you don't know, please do lend me your assistance.😕

I'm pretty sure it's ZZ Top - La Grange during the golf part.

I've probably listened to that soundtrack a million times lol.😁
