Who is the greatest director of all time? in Movies ·
And what on earth is going on with Jakov Sedlar, for goodness' sake?
The Little Prince in Movies ·
Thomas Moore592 said:Where did all those classics go? I’m talking about the era of *The Little Prince*, *Kevin*, *Wolf*, *Perina's Society*, and *Train* in the snow—all those legendary productions from the old Yugoslavia days. For our American cinema, those were achievements on a level we simply can't hope to replicate. Not ever. Not how things are heading now.

Honestly, what happened? It’s like amateur hour took over the entire film industry. Total chaos.
The South used to be a true State with a capital S, back when its cinema was one of its greatest exports. Since it all fell apart, we've just ended up with a collection of tiny, disorganized little nations where movies are nothing more than an afterthought.

I honestly don't get why people start getting all worked up immediately if they're Korean, Russian, or Chinese—those guys are clearly the bad guys here.
Besides, North Korea basically spends all its time making fun of itself anyway.
Iranian film recommendations? in Movies ·
stormybison42 said:Maybe I should just go read everything written during the USSR era then.🙂 I guess I’d have to reject Thomas Mann too, just because he belonged to a nation that—to put it mildly—crushed human rights back in the day. And anything from Victorian England? Forget it, since millions died of hunger just so they could celebrate a coronation in India.

I don't know how you can judge a civilization that's thousands of years old based solely on its current political setup. I mean, Canada is one of the most organized countries out there, but their contribution to global culture doesn't even come close to what Iran has offered.

I actually just finished watching Kiarostami's film Shirin. Believe it or not, the whole thing takes place inside a movie theater, following the faces of about a hundred women watching a film about the legendary Armenian princess Shirin and her love for Shah Khosrau. We don't actually see the movie they're watching, but we hear the story through the subtitles and follow along. He's such an incredible filmmaker!

You actually made two mistakes here:
First off, Nazi Germany and the fascist USSR are relics of the past. The totalitarian reality in Iran is happening right now.
Second, my decision to boycott Iranian films isn't a judgment on the millennia of Iranian civilization and culture itself.

Of course, I was just joking about the boycott to see if anyone would take the bait. No hard feelings! But even in a joke, there's usually a kernel of truth. Anyway, that's not really the point. 🙂
Iranian film recommendations? in Movies ·
Since Iran is basically the biggest threat to human rights right up there with North Korea, I’m strictly boycotting their films.
The Little Prince in Movies ·
The Little Prince should have had curly hair and looked a bit younger. Honestly, I can't say I'm surprised by all this criticism regarding how poorly the kids are acting.
Olympus Has Fallen (2013) in Movies ·
Wait, so in Olympus Has Fallen, are the villains actually leftists?

If this movie were actually as insidious as people claim, you wouldn't be trashing it—you'd be praising it.
Republican propaganda? Please. As if Republicans and Democrats are so fundamentally different that we have to distinguish between their versions of propaganda. By that logic, I guess "The Lone Ranger" must be Democratic propaganda!?
It’s an action flick with a bit more Hollywood exaggeration than usual, but otherwise, it's completely harmless.

Don't just burn the movie; throw the filmmakers in jail! 😁
Patrick Martin said:Look, if we're talking about The Godfather, Schindler's List, and The Shawshank Redemption, then fine. But everything else here doesn't even touch the top 50, let alone the top 10.

I have to disagree! The Good, the Bad and the Ugly absolutely belongs there. In fact, I’d put it right in my personal top five given this lineup.

It really comes down to taste, obviously. But in any logical ranking, Fight Club is the only one here that just doesn't fit the bill.

...And oh, I just noticed The Dark Knight on the list.
Olympus Has Fallen (2013) in Movies ·
See, I actually had the opposite experience. In the first case, I got the mindless action I was expecting, but the second one turned out to be just mediocre—mostly uninteresting, really. 😁

And honestly? This is already a step up from all those recent rehashes starring washed-up action stars we've been seeing lately.

Counterpoint here... why would Prometheus be better or worse then? In terms of how serious they are, they’re basically on the same level.

I honestly don't get how some people on this forum can act so shocked by the idea of someone taking over the White House or find the special forces' tactics illogical. Are you guys even aware of how ridiculous you look trying to sound smart?
This movie is way too vague to even have that kind of debate. It’s just a standard action flick with decent directing; it actually reminds me of those old-school 90s thrillers, which brings up a certain sense of nostalgia.
Looking for realism in movies like this is just a total waste of time.

Galicia is easily one of the most legendary bands in the country. They have such an incredible catalog of hits:
Newport, Skadar, Faith, Gospi, I'm still dreaming about them... plus so many others...

Their cover of "Dimitrija sin mitra" is absolutely fantastic.

Speaking of Voyu, Matthias Hues really defined 90s action cinema with his fight scenes:

When it comes to today's music, I have to dig pretty deep myself just to find something that actually clicks. Even then, I usually stumble upon something decent eventually! But I never bother looking at the US or UK top charts. Honestly, even back in the 80s and 90s, those mainstream lists weren't serving up much of substance for me. I always looked elsewhere to find the real gems..

I agree with everyone here, especially with the bolded part.

Man, Florida Georgia Line is basically just genetically engineered country designed specifically for today's kids. I'm not saying I actually like them—they're fine, and I can listen to them if I have to—but they're just part of the crowd. Since eighty percent of the charts these days are nothing but R&B and pop-R&B nonsense, which I've never been a fan of, they'll do.
Well, that’s just how fashion works. When the frontman of that American rock band Tornado (this is a track I actually really enjoy) was asked about the current state of music, he argued that it's a systematic, deliberate attempt to manufacture brainwashed generations. Whether he's right or wrong is a much broader sociological issue.

And you can always fall back on something else, like Alter Bridge or some other classic legend.

And hey, I'm just kidding about the Beatles. Look, I listen to Merle Haggard ☕
