If an employee is looking to transition immediately to a new role, waiting several days could pose a significant issue....

In my experience, Social Security stuff usually clears in about half an hour.
I think I saw somewhere on their website that a new employer can just register you even if your previous one hasn't officially processed your exit yet. It used to be a headache, but apparently, they've streamlined it now.
Or was I thinking of how Medicare works?

Alternatively, you could just have them process the termination a couple of days early, then on the actual last day, you just print out the confirmation paperwork.

I was told they're currently installing the latest software updates for them.

I tried logging into my MyMedicare portal today. As easy as it is to check my Social Security benefits online, they’ve made this whole process unnecessarily complicated. 🙂
Honestly, I can't stand it. ☕

I’m honestly just wondering what happens now that everything—every single registration and cancellation—is being handled online. What becomes of all those workers who used to sit behind the counters at Social Security and Medicare & Medicaid Services?

Are we just going to keep paying them to sit there and count the days, just like before? While we end up doing their jobs for them?

I believe it’s called District 1 or something similar—it should be the very first one that pops up on the list of forms.
We were just venting about this the other day; why on earth can't they just label them clearly, like "Enrollment" or "Cancellation," instead of using cryptic labels like District 1 or District 2? You shouldn't have to play detective just to figure out which form is which.

hey!

You don't really have to turn anything in to anyone; you just fill out the online form and hit send. They don't ask for much else beyond that. You just need to have your basic info ready (Social Security number, taxpayer ID, insurance number, education history, etc.)
I read somewhere that they might want scanned copies of certain documents, but so far, nobody has asked me for anything, and all my filings went through without a hitch.

Carol Price4 said:I finished processing all the sales tax for January today—but my balances aren't lining up with what I'm seeing on the ETA system. Specifically, the debit/credit amounts are totally off from the actual balance... anyone else running into this? Hehehe... clearly something is wonky over there.

I just finished running my January sales tax figures today too.
But I ran into a bit of a headache immediately. When I pull the ETA report with today's date, everything looks fine. But then I tried pulling a report dated March 1st, 2014 (just checking some accounts), and the totals were completely wrong. Then it clicked—the system is automatically calculating interest for that period.

Basically, the system shows the tax was filed but hasn't been paid yet (due by Feb 28th), so it jumped straight to adding interest for the March 1st calculation. The weird part is that this doesn't show up on the individual tax cards, only on the summary sheet. On the individual level, the math adds up perfectly.
Their reporting cards are incredibly confusing.

It’s honestly a relief to know I'm not the only one dealing with this lag; I was starting to worry I'd messed something up on my end...🙄

I just checked today and saw mine isn't processed yet either. I was actually sitting around waiting for an IRS agent to call me because I thought I'd messed up a couple of cents again.

with my claims, if it’s under two business days (usually three), nothing has been processed yet
which is why I'm sending mine in early 😍

I misspoke earlier—I checked as soon as I clocked in today, and I can print out the confirmation. In the top right corner, it still shows "processing." A coworker of mine who filed applications for the exact same date already has that black barcode (or whatever they call it) in that spot instead.

That confirmation popped up after about thirty minutes, which is what I meant regarding both myself and my colleague. I’ll check back again on Monday; hopefully, it'll be fully processed by then.

I guess I’m just stuck "on hold" until the actual date listed as my termination day
(that was the only point I could actually pull the confirmation showing the cancellation was final)

No, the confirmation popped up saying it was processed after just half an hour. I even printed out the receipt for my records, and it shows the date as February 23rd.

I have a quick question regarding de-registering an employee from Social Security. This person is working through Friday (Feb 21st), and I’d like to set their end date as Sunday to ensure there isn't a gap in their service history—meaning, effective Feb 23rd.
Since that falls on a Sunday, can I just take care of this on Friday?

I'm basing this on the information found on the Social Security Administration website:

We note that e-filings can be submitted to the Agency up to seven days in advance to mitigate such issues. Processing for these received filings, and the associated deadlines, begins on the day the insured individual's status changes (the date of acquisition or termination of coverage).

Has anyone here tried filing an employee's termination early? I don't want to mess anything up.

I forgot to mention—every time I call the lady at the SSA office, she refuses to give me any actual information. She just keeps telling me everything is listed on their website; she won't even budge on a single detail. My conclusion is that they simply have no clue what they're doing, though maybe that's not it. I just don't understand why they would be so unhelpful.

Roger Stewart2 said:So, I just turned in my payroll and tax forms back on January 15th, and now—total fluke, really—I’m glancing at my Chase account and noticing something weird. Neither the deduction nor my actual deposit from the 15th is showing up anywhere on my card statement. Has anyone else run into this before, or does anyone have a clue what might be going on?

Did you use the correct payment references? Like, those newer ones?
Then again, if you actually used the wrong ones, the payment would probably just show up under the "old" references anyway.

David Green642 said:Classic job seeker stupidity. Just explain it to them like this: you send the form, and the IRS receives it. That *is* the automated processing. There isn't some third magical option—they should probably try educating themselves on how the e-filing system actually works, otherwise they're just talking nonsense. 😉

This time, they even asked me for a confirmation from the IRS proving all our payroll taxes were paid up.

Since they want monthly statements showing the payments, and we didn't have traditional statements because we offset everything through our sales tax filings, I ended up pulling every single ledger from the IRS portal showing the debits and credits for all the contributions.
And then, after a few days, the caseworker called to tell me his supervisor said that wasn't enough—that we still had to bring in an official certification from the IRS.

I’m also only seeing a $62.50 charge for the IRS. I think, though I can't say for certain, that there might have been some kind of $40 fee when we were transferring everything from Chase over to the IRS card. I can double-check the exact amount tomorrow.

As for what happens next, nobody has given me any updates yet.

My certificate at JPMorgan Chase expired last year. It was a complete circus—the manager actually brought my card back and forth to the branch a few times because they were totally lost on what to do with it. Eventually, it clicked for them that there wasn't some grand procedure required; I just used my Fidelity Investments card to log into the JPMorgan Chase portal and everything worked perfectly. You just use the PIN from Fidelity, not the one from JPMorgan Chase.

Looking at these certificate issuance dates now, my digital tax certificate was definitely issued well before March 11, 2013, and I never ran into any issues with it (which is saying something, since I'm constantly dealing with technical glitches otherwise).

Why don't you try taking that Fidelity card down to JPMorgan Chase tomorrow and see if you can log in with it?

Kyle Rogers8 said:Unless someone who actually filled out the new access form shows up...

I'm thinking the "user" or "users" refers to whoever the corporate card is issued to—it can be multiple people per company, though in my case, it's just me.
That's how it worked on the old access sheet.

I was the one filling it out.

The "Obligor Name" field is for the business name. It's not for the employees you're hiring or firing; that's where you register your own company (or LLC) so you have the authority to manage staff later on.

The "User" should be the first and last name of the person whose name is on the card (whether it's that Chase card or whatever you're using for the IRS). Once you enter that, they'll cross-reference the database to find that specific individual.

silverbadger said:I finally managed to get some actual healthcare assistance from someone who actually knows what they're doing today.
They basically scan all your documents and send them off as an attachment via email. You have to sign everything using a digital ID card, and apparently, you can only do it through Microsoft Outlook. They gave me instructions specifically for the 2007 version, but since we’re running 2010, the whole digital signature configuration process is slightly different. After spending a solid hour wrestling with it and digging through help files, I had to call up a buddy of mine who works in IT just to finally get this much-hyped email signing feature working properly.
It really feels like this could have been handled so much more elegantly—something streamlined like our online tax filings or the Social Security administration systems. Instead, it feels like every single department in the government is going to have its own unique way of delivering data and its own set of formats: one office wants a JPG, another demands a PDF, and a third expects you to use a specific web app... it's honestly a total nightmare. But hey, I guess it doesn't matter as long as they drop a new regulation on us by December 30th stating that starting January 1st, we have to submit all our forms or file employee registrations exclusively online.

Oh, come on... 🙂 🙂
Wait, if I understood you correctly, you're saying you need to have 2007 Office installed (which, luckily or unluckily, I actually do right now) just to send them an email through Microsoft?

What if I use Live Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird? Am I forced to have Microsoft just for them?

Or did I get all that mixed up?

Thanks for all the help you're providing.

But who gets a pass and who doesn't? I thought I was being careful by just posting a link to the instructions from pips, but then I got told they weren't allowed, so I just want to make sure I don't mess up again.

Don't mention it. Honestly, I'm struggling with pretty much everything here, so I'm just genuinely relieved there's someone out there willing to lend a hand.
