Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Joshua Diaz10 said:I've been running Windows 7 for a few days now and honestly, the vibes are pretty good—it looks sharp, the Windows Update interface actually makes sense for once, and shutdown takes about 13 or 14 seconds🙏. The Device Manager is still a bit of a mess, though—not exactly polished—but hey, Speccy handles everything perfectly fine, so I'm not losing sleep over it.
The only thing bugging me is whether I can trim down the Pagefile. Windows 7 suggests setting aside 5.2 GB of disk space, but even though I’ve got 4 GB of Kingmax RAM tucked away in here, my partition isn't massive enough to just hand over 5 GB of space without feeling it.
Right now, the Pagefile is locked in at a fixed 5 GB.

Just drop it down to 2 GB. Forget what Windows recommends; it doesn't know what it's talking about. 🙂

The only card you're actually going to find in there is:

AGP HD3450/512MB, ATI Radeon, HD3450, AGP 4x/8x, 512 MB, DDR2, 64-bit, GPU Core Clock 600 MHz, Memory Clock 800 MHz, DVI-I, HDTV yes, 1x D-sub, 2048x1536 - $103

Look, if your motherboard has an AGP slot, you're basically stuck in the past—those cards aren't even being manufactured anymore, so don't expect to pick up anything modern. That HD3450 will feel like a total space shuttle compared to whatever you're running right now. Plus, honestly? Your processor is way too weak to even handle a GT440.

Because there’s honestly zero need for it—we aren't running any credit card transactions or handling sensitive data here... and since SSL certificates actually cost money, unless you're looking to pay a premium just to browse the forum, we'll stick to this. 🙂

Look, if you're working with some ancient, relic-tier case from the early 2000s, just do yourself a favor and grab a tape measure—seriously, measure it. The card those guys suggested is about 8.6 inches long, and you really don't want to find out the hard way that it’s going to slam right into the hard drive cage.

Look, you can mix and match different brands all you want—it won't break anything—but just know that the cards are going to sync down to the speed of the slowest one. It’s basically the same deal as when you pair up two different sticks of RAM with mismatched speeds.

And as for the power supply... I mean, each card is pulling roughly 250-260W on its own, and that’s before you even start thinking about overclocking them (or the CPU, for that matter). Personally? I’d be aiming for an 850W unit—better safe than sorry.

What’s the deal with saying "everything's working fine throughout the house"—that’s a bit vague, don't you think? Have you actually called up your ISP yet?

Is this the right subforum? Man, this is a sticky subject... I’m actually working on putting something together regarding this—just need to get a decent intro post organized first.

Look, when you’re drunk, the move is to head straight to bed—not to stumble around the internet posting absolute garbage. 😁

Look, the 5770 is actually more powerful than both those 6xxx cards combined.

What’s the reason behind all this?

Lawrence Phillips said:See, you just handed me the answer to my next question—which, honestly, just triggers a whole chain reaction of other questions. It’s not even just about the GPU anymore; it’s about the entire upgrade path.

It’s always such a headache trying to find that sweet spot between upgrading an old rig and just buying a whole new machine. With all these new i3s, i5s, and whatever else is out there, I’m starting to wonder if investing in a better graphics card is even worth the cash.

Then there's the bottleneck issue—the processor. My next logical move would be swapping out that black CPU, moving from a dual-core to a quad-core. But once you start looking at that, you're basically staring down the barrel of needing a new motherboard and a modern generation chip too... so yeah, that's pretty much off the table for now.

Look, you’ll always get better performance running a dual core with a beefier GPU than you will with a quad core paired with a weak card. Personally, I wouldn't even touch the upgrade yet—you can always overclock the CPU, and those GTS cards still have plenty of breathing room... or, like stormywolf39 said, just pick up something used.

There’s really nothing left for you to upgrade to—you’re basically sitting on the most powerful card ever made for the AGP slot, and besides, nobody is actually manufacturing AGP cards anymore.
Troubleshooting 5.1 surround sound issues in Computer Peripherals ·
You could always try hunting down some new drivers over on the Silicon Valley website, but honestly? I just gave up and bought a dedicated sound card. It wasn't even an issue with Windows 7—it’s definitely a Silicon Valley hardware problem. 🙂

Check your Realtek HD manager—you should see an option for 'speaker fill' in there. Just toggle that on, and it’ll let you broadcast that stereo sound through all your speakers at once.

I’ve been scrolling through this thread for a bit now—it feels like we're looking at a pretty mid-tier budget IPS monitor here: http://www.overclock.net/hardware-ne...-features.html

I’m assuming there’s some kind of discount if I grab five or more Office packages at once, but their website is being incredibly vague about what the actual savings look like.

Look, just shoot an inquiry to a few different vendors and ask for a quote. You aren't going to get anywhere just clicking around the website. 🙂
A few questions about my new headphones? in Computer Peripherals ·
Hey Johnson & Johnson, I see they’ve got the D1 in their offer—honestly, that card is killer. If they don't have the DX available, just grab the D1 and call it a day, but maybe give them a ring first to see if you can snag the DX instead. I’ve actually picked up some pretty rare stuff from those guys that I couldn't find anywhere else... plus, if you're looking for a massive selection of Bose gear, you can find plenty over at Rhode Island.

Forget about ordering from there, though—half the stuff on their site is listed wrong anyway. 😁

Check out the Movie subforum—there’s this massive thread going about subtitles right now. You might actually find the right one there, or at least someone will point you in the right direction.
