When you’ve landed a great career and a world-famous, stunning girlfriend, life feels pretty much peaked, doesn't it? At least, that was the logic Peter followed, right up until everything went sideways.
Peter Bretter is essentially the type of guy who loves blindly, catering to his partner's every whim even when she treats him like an afterthought... which is exactly what defines his six-year relationship with Sarah Marshall, a rising star in the TV industry. It seems whenever she picks up an award, he isn't even a footnote in her lengthy list of thank-yous, and he's usually ushered out of the shot before the photographers can even snap a picture. His primary role is simply ensuring she has everything she needs, remaining on standby twenty-four hours a day...
And yet, Peter doesn't seem to mind the imbalance, contentedly convincing himself that he's actually happy. That is, until the day Sarah walks out on him, leaving him completely adrift. If we're being honest, this might be the best thing that ever happened to him, but it's hard to feel sympathy for the guy when he's lost his entire sense of purpose... After six years of being part of a duo, he's suddenly alone. So, what's the move? A classic, old-school American road trip to clear the head. Without much deliberation, Peter heads off to Hawaii to find some clarity, only to stumble into a rather "pleasant" surprise. While staying at his resort, he runs right into his ex, who is currently accompanied by her new boyfriend, the famous British rock star Aldous Snow.
As he struggles to process the reality that Sarah has wiped the slate clean and moved on, he finds a bit of solace in flirting with Rachel, a staff member at the resort. After working through a few rounds of cocktails, her easygoing nature and relaxed outlook on life slowly start to pull him back from the brink... Whether Peter can truly move past his ex and reclaim his own life remains to be seen.
