It tanked in the US. Apparently, it was all because of some joke that got taken the wrong way.

Just after the US release on December 4, 2020, the film caused an uproar on US social media because of a scene in which Jin's character jokingly asks: "Look at my knees!", and to the question "What kind of knees are these?", he replies: "Chi-knees!". US viewers interpreted this as a reference to the racist playground chant "Chinese, Japanese, dirty knees", and therefore as an insult to Americans.

Let me school you on this for a second, though I didn't mean to. Napoleon actually had a fiancée long before Josephine came along. There’s a massive collection of love letters from both sides, so you can say he was genuinely loved. And don't even get me started on the proof of devotion we see with Maria Walewska—the way she looked after him while he was exiled and stripped of his power. She stayed by him even when he wasn't some powerful figure that women just flock to.

And yet another inaccurate claim I chose to ignore: Napoleon wasn't some kind of "messiah" either...

Time to grab a drink.

Technically, I couldn't read between the lines of your illusion since you only wrote one single line. And let's be real, he was perfectly capable of handling a woman long before he turned into the terrifying Napoleon; he met Josephine well before he became that ruthless conqueror. But sure, you're totally right. These "nobodies" always end up building these massive military and political careers to become emperors.

And naturally, where would you ever admit you're wrong?

If you’re talking about Josephine, then yeah, she’s that older widow. They tied the knot back in 1796, and she was actually six years his senior. Napoleon didn't stick around forever, either—she had plenty of lovers after that, just like he did.

I had the same thought regarding the title...

The name of Scott's Napoleon movie is Kitbag, apparently taken from the saying, “There is a general’s staff hidden in every soldier’s kitbag.”

Once it hits theaters here in the States, they could easily call it "devil in a bag".😁

Mila Kunis 😍 is still gorgeous and dangerous.

Since it’s banned from US theaters, people will just watch it later. They'll see the quality for themselves. Critics are already calling this his best work since Polanski the pianist. I'm convinced—that's why I'm saying I Accuse is a good film before I've even seen it. That's my take. I'm not telling you how to feel. This whole American-style boycott thing is ridiculous. If we follow this logic, should the European Union start banning movies by Woody Allen too?

Obviously. Roman Polanski is a brilliant director. Unfortunately, his true value will only be realized over the coming years—not because of the Alfred Dreyfus situation, which is the least of the controversies here, but because of how distribution in the USA keeps shutting him out.

This movie is going to age like a fine French wine. 👍 I wonder how much they’ll actually dive into Emile Zola's involvement. Can't wait to see it... 🍿
