Overrated sports icons? in Other Sports ·
I honestly can't stand how people constantly belittle baseball, rugby, or cricket. These are some of the most iconic and widely recognized sports on the planet—easily a million times more popular than water polo or handball. But no, apparently, it's just too much to ask not to mock them.

Back when I was traveling through the States, I ran into this guy who actually said, "It's such a shame handball is even an Olympic sport." Of course, he was dead wrong, but it really highlights how much of a niche sport handball is to the rest of the world...
And before anyone starts with the whole "ignorant American" trope—no, that's not it at all.

no way, Babe was actually one of the greatest to ever play.

Personally, I’d much rather argue that Joltin Joe is the guy who became an icon mainly because of the press—and his personal life (that whole thing with Marilyn Monroe).

Sorry, my friend, but for me, the true sporting legend is Anthony—the world champion in lawn bowling—rather than this Ruth guy, who plays what kind of damn sport, anyway???!!!
Who even plays that besides those loud Americans, who basically ruined football by adding helmets and cups and calling it "football" (total blasphemy to the spirit of the game!)? Anthony plays a sport that's actually recognized in more than three countries globally!!!!!!!24>> ☕

Anthony Jackson2 said:Kudos to Blanka and Joško, really—but personally, I’m firmly on the gips side of this one.

First off, even Blanka herself—and especially her father—are just incredibly, incredibly unlikable people in my book; I get this nagging feeling they are both far too full of themselves and act rather condescending, which isn't exactly a trait I care for in anyone... 🤷

Secondly, in my view, the real distinction between them is that gips handles everything for his athletes—from physical conditioning to technical prep. On the flip side, without Marinović, Vlašić wouldn't be worth a damn... all those nutrition plans, training regimens, and fitness routines don't mean much when you consider that if Blanka didn't have Marinović, she might just be an average high jumper—a massive talent without any actual results. I am somewhat convinced that Joško simply lacks the deep technical knowledge required to teach the nuances of the high jump, and frankly, that is gips' biggest advantage. If anyone deserves credit for Blanka's success, it truly is Marinović.

Best post on this entire board.
I especially appreciate how you aren't afraid to say exactly how much Blanka rubs you the wrong way.
Well, at least someone else feels the same way...

Honestly, the mere fact that it's the US Olympic Committee despite the Olympics having happened just last year speaks volumes... that's all there is to it. This guy won two medals at the Olympics. End of story.
Vlašić vs Kostelić in Other Sports ·
Well, this discussion has gone completely off the rails... 🙏 🙏

Well, obviously... my point was simply to illustrate how the competition in skiing is significantly more intense than in high jump.
And honestly, anyone still insisting that "track and field is the queen of sports"—maybe that was true once upon a time, but these days? Skiing is far more watched and much more popular than track and field...

Terry Rodriguez41 said:It’s honestly ridiculous—Vlašić is back at it again... 🙏

That’s actually the first intelligent thing I’ve read from you...

No, seriously—Gips absolutely crushes Vlašić...

I can't stand either of them—honestly, I just can't stomach the massive hype surrounding American athletes lately... though, I have to admit, that one soccer player was a total legend—a real class act and a genuine guy...🙏But honestly—just speaking purely from my own perspective—I feel like there’s just more backbone in Gips than there is in Joško...
I haven't read an interview with Vlašić where he isn't absolutely bragging about every little thing—talking endlessly about his "projects" and acting like he's the only one who matters while downplaying everyone else... And honestly, those ridiculous stunts he pulls after winning completely absurd awards—just look at that whole episode with the rowers—are just plain distasteful...

On the other hand—Gips is a total conservative, a bit of a tyrant, and honestly, incredibly vain and self-important... he basically checks every single box on my list of traits I can't stand in people. But, somehow, amidst all that, he possesses this peculiar streak of madness that keeps him driving forward. And frankly, I’ve always had a soft spot for that kind of unpredictability and sheer intensity in a person...

When it comes to this specific situation, Gips is absolutely right—hands down. The guy earned his award, yet he’s being attacked for it... It’s honestly ridiculous. And let's be real—there are probably ten girls around the world obsessively training to increase their leg span by two feet, whereas in the skiing world, the competition is just on an entirely different level of intensity...
Aaron Young35 said:Come on, guys—seriously, let's stop the collective nonsense here.

All this talk about Canadian arrogance being brought up in this thread... honestly, you could apply that exact same logic to how Americans view us in the South. You wouldn't have won a single Davis Cup or those handful of handball trophies if it wasn't for the talent coming out of our neck of the woods. And don't even get me started on the talent drain. In America, nobody complains about that—people move for better opportunities, higher paychecks, and actual career growth. It’s just simple math and common sense... really.

Patriotism? Give me a break. Who is actually paying for that? The taxpayers? If you're looking for patriotism, go look at the thieves sitting in the government offices—they're the ones getting paid to pretend.

The amount of money the US poured into Jack Fak—and that one medal he's leaving behind—is just way too much.

Now that's what I call expertise👍
The Smiths in Movies ·
Elizabeth Baker38 said:The concept felt solid at first, but I don't feel like they actually tapped into all that potential—marketing, rolling out new products, building up the hype... even the Smith family, who would be like those neighbors in the suburbs whose lawn is always perfectly manicured, were great touchpoints, but they just didn't play them enough. Such a shame.
And honestly, that whole internal conflict with the lead character and everything that stemmed from it—without spoiling anything—I think the movie might have actually been better if they hadn't gone 😬

I'm with you there—it’s a brilliant premise, but the execution just wasn't quite dialed in.
They probably could have skipped the protagonist's moral dilemmas entirely, though without them, the story might have lacked that classic plot structure...

All in all, still an interesting watch.
Kudos to Fak for finally getting out of this wasteland!
There is absolutely NO LIFE here.

Good for him for heading over to the States—let those empty-headed Americans sulk about it all they want.
Issues with my Samsung monitor - SyncMaster 940nw in Computer Peripherals ·
Hi there, everyone.

My monitor was working flawlessly until just a few days ago—and now...

When I hit the power button, nothing happens immediately.🙂

Hehe, that little blue power light just blinks—in this steady, rhythmic way—for a few minutes, and then, suddenly, it kicks on and works perfectly fine for the rest of the day if needed.

I'm fairly certain it isn't a loose connection or some simple "bad contact" issue, but I'm honestly at a loss as to what could be going on...
Why won't it just boot up right away like it used to? Why does it need those few minutes to wake up?🤷

If anyone could point me in the right direction regarding what might be causing this...

Thanks.🙂

Edit — the unit is about two and a half years old.
