Issues with external hard drive in IT Support ·
shadowwalker7 said:I've got the button right there, but it’s like it doesn't even exist, you know? Absolutely nothing happens when I click it.

I’m thinking you might need to allocate some space first... though honestly, I'm not entirely sure if you can pull that off without wiping every single bit of data on that partition...

Nah, don't just send a screenshot of the little box in the corner; send me a shot of what you see when you right-click that drive in Disk Management—you know, the part that actually shows how much space is being used up..

I honestly can't believe I'm even seeing this right now because it feels like we're all just staring at a ghost in the machine, you know? I was looking through some old files earlier and stumbled upon this screenshot, and man, does it bring back a flood of memories about how much things have changed since the early days of computing! It’s kind of wild to think about how far we've come from those clunky interfaces, isn't it? Does anyone else get that weird sense of nostalgia when they see these old layouts, or am I just getting old and sentimental over a bunch of pixels? It really makes you wonder if we actually lost something in terms of simplicity along the way, or if we definitely traded it for the sheer power we have today. What do you guys think? Is there a part of you that misses the old-school vibe, or are you all too busy with modern tech to care?

I mean, I honestly don't know, shouldn't it just work like any other standard USB stick you'd grab at Best Buy?
Does your drive have some kind of physical button on it? I know for certain that some of them actually have a dedicated key, and you have to physically press it before the drive even shows up in your file explorer!

If that doesn't do the trick, then I honestly have no clue what else to tell you, man! I’m totally stumped here, so why don't you try Googling the specific driver for that disk and see if anything pops up? 🕺

but honestly, he doesn't even realize what the actual issue with the database is, I'm pretty sure it's just a missing driver

Seriously, just delete the partition... it’s basically just a formatting issue at this point, right? Honestly, why not just click on that little square all the way over on the left where it shows the drive name, go into properties, and then hit that "update driver" tab? Man, I can't even remember what the exact wording is on the US version of the OS...

It’s not even picking up the device at all... if you right-click on it, what kind of options are actually showing up for you??
Alright, try going into properties and then hit update driver...
Man, seeing Windows running on a US build like this is just painful

wanderingpanther68 said:Are these batteries universal? Or would it be smarter if I just pulled mine out and took it to the store to make sure they give me the right one? It shouldn't cost more than $17 bucks, right? 🤔

Man, I already tried it and it’s still lagging—I'm positive it's the battery because this thing never used to lag like this years ago.

I guess I'll just head out later and try to track down a new battery if I can find one, there isn't really any other way..

I'm pretty sure they're universal... I mean, what else could they be? Once the computer loses power, it totally forgets the date and everything else...

wanderingpanther68 said:So, over the last couple of days, I’ve noticed this weird thing where every morning when I boot up my PC, the system clock is way off—right now it’s showing 4:42... I’ve seriously never had this happen before,
is this a sign that the CMOS battery is finally dying and needs a swap?
Does anyone know roughly how much a new one costs, and do they usually carry them at Best Buy?

Yesterday the exact same thing happened to me, and even though I set the time correctly, it stayed fine all day, but then the next morning I turn the computer on and it's lagging by like 7 hours again. 😲

That's exactly it, your motherboard battery is running out of juice, that's what happened to my old rig too... honestly, just try setting the time to sync automatically... maybe it'll just fix itself once you boot up
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Kate Adams83 said:I mentioned over on page 402 that I managed to grab Windows 7 from that site you guys suggested, and everything seemed totally fine at first, but now this "activate windows" message is popping up out of nowhere... how on earth am I supposed to get rid of that annoying thing or actually get it activated? My screen is back to being all black and depressing again...

Xbox 360 emulator for Xbox One? in Software ·
Kevin Ruiz36 said:Right now, we’ve got the Xenia emulator for PC, but let's be real—it can't handle the heavy hitters yet, since they've only managed to get some tiny indie games running with pretty terrible graphics. Honestly, I'm convinced that building a decent emulator for the Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3 would take a massive team of geniuses, an insane amount of time, and just a mountain of cash.

You have to watch out because there are tons of fake websites and sketchy videos out there promising free PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 emulators, but you can spot them a mile away because they force you through those annoying, brainless surveys before you can even download anything. They also look super unprofessional and tacky, with bright, garish designs that scream "scam" the second you see them, usually because they're just peddling total junk. If you see a download that claims to be only a few hundred kilobytes or comes in weird .exe or .bin formats, just run—you're definitely about to infect your PC with malware.

I mean, honestly, who could actually fall for that stuff? It's almost laughable... especially since the architecture for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is so complex, so don't hold your breath until we see high-end emulation for these newer consoles one day.
Xbox 360 emulator for Xbox One? in Software ·
I honestly feel like Microsoft is just going to roll out a software update that lets us run those old classics directly on the new console, you know? Like, why bother with a clunky emulator when they can just bake it right into the system? I'm not totally certain yet, but I've got this gut feeling that a dedicated PC emulator is never actually going to happen the way we want it to.

Best external hard drives to buy right now? in Hardware ·
fadedgardener18 said:I'm looking at picking up an external hard drive, so I could really use some pointers here.

1. Is using an external drive basically just plug-and-play, like any other USB gadget where you just dump your data and go?

2. What's the actual lifespan on these things? I can't find a straight answer anywhere, though I've seen people mention they last about four years.
I'm not planning on living out of this drive or anything; it’ll just sit there most of the time until I have a bunch of new files—photos, music, whatever—to offload from my laptop a few times a year.

3. I'm leaning towards grabbing a Seagate. Are they actually the gold standard or what?

4. I read somewhere that you need to keep these drives in a cool, dry spot. Is just leaving it at room temperature fine, or does it need to be kept even colder than that?

5. Do these things even need "cleaning"? And if so, how often are we talking?

Man, why are you making this such a huge ordeal? It's really not that deep....
The disk you have from your aunt is roughly $200, and honestly, SanDisk is a great brand.... though most of them are pretty much fine...
imageThey look like this, and hey, I actually dropped one of mine off a fourth-story balcony once—luckily it was inside its plastic packaging and it didn't even skip a beat....

It doesn't really matter how often you use it, as long as you aren't leaving it plugged in 24/7, right? Obviously, if you aren't using it, just unplug it from the computer. 😬

Just keep it in a cool, dry spot like any other piece of tech, whether it's your iPhone or whatever else you own.... nothing crazy special about it, keeping it in your room is totally fine. 🤣

And there's zero reason to clean it..... dust isn't getting inside the casing anyway.
Man, it’s honestly pretty easy, nothing surprising there at all...

The only thing I can really think of is that you should definitely grab one of those laptop stands with the built-in cooling fans underneath...

Timothy Kim60 said:Maybe try toggling the Intel Memory Profile in your BIOS settings? If you get stuck, the manual is always available on the official support site if you need to dig deeper.

Alright, thanks! I'll give that a shot...
edit: Hey, it actually worked! Just two clicks in the BIOS and now I'm sitting at 1866—I honestly wasn't even looking to mess with those settings, you know? Hopefully, this gives me at least a tiny little boost in performance, right?
Oh, and just a heads up, there isn't an Intel Memory Profile option here, it's just EXPO
New stick of RAM! in Hardware ·
Hey, so I noticed my RAM is just sitting there running at 1333, even though it's actually rated for 1866, and I was wondering if there's any way to actually get it up to speed if that's even possible?

I mean, there really isn't... (bad answer... 😬 , you still have a GPU)
the guy probably thinks maybe you haven't set the right resolution in Windows or something...
honestly, just... wipe those old drivers out completely and install the fresh ones.

Now you just gotta grab some RAM and you're good to go! 😁

I know that site well, let me just take a quick look 😁

Timothy Kim60 said:it’s literally right there in the manual, man

Honestly, who even knows where to look for that stuff...

William Morris13 said:If you've got 4 slots available, you just go with the first and third, then the second and fourth—they're actually color-coded to show you that.

Man, I must've been dreaming or something, okay thanks!
New stick of RAM! in Hardware ·
William Morris13 said:Basically, the system will just scale down the latencies and the MHz to match whatever the slowest stick is, right? Honestly, if you aren't some hardcore overclocking nut trying to squeeze out every single drop of performance, it really doesn't matter that much. If you just pick two solid brands with similar specs, you won't even notice a difference unless you're pushing your hardware way past its limits.

So, I'm not totally sure which chipset you're running, but usually when you look at a motherboard, certain slots are color-coded differently, so you just pop the sticks into the two matching colored slots and boom... you're running in Dual-channel mode. It’s not rocket science, really.

Man, I've got an ASRock FM2A88M Extreme4+; nothing fancy, honestly kind of a junk board, but hey, it gets the job done for what I need... I've got a 6790K clocked at 4.3GHz paired with these 4 gigs... everything is running smooth so far, haven't had a single issue...

I just want to circle back to my question though, how can I actually tell if Dual-channel is working? My board has four RAM slots, and right now I've got one stick in the first slot, so I was planning on putting the new one in the third slot to get that Dual-channel setup going —but the problem is, all the slots are black... does this board even support Dual-channel? —quick update: okay, it does support it—I just saw it listed on their website... alright, so if that's the case, should I go with the third slot then?
