Locking threads instead of actually moderating in Feedback & Suggestions ·
This thread was closed for good reason; we’ve been stuck in a cycle of constant bickering and trolling for months now. Honestly, I wouldn't even bother reopening a discussion in this specific format anymore because there’s zero point to it—it just turns into a shouting match where people attack anyone posting an ad or anyone brave enough to think "outside the box." It has reached a point where certain users are basically treating their own personal vendettas like they're fighting holy wars.

When you're faced with a continuous stream of nonsense, you have to ask: do you keep documenting every single mess, or do you just shut the whole thing down? In my book, closing the door is always the smarter move. 🤷

Am I ever going to get an answer here?

I mean, if there wasn't actually a mistake made by the moderator, what exactly is the hold-up?

You guys are unbelievable.

If blondes and cops are considered fictional caricatures, then how come Canadians, Mexicans, and Gypsies aren't?

Go jump in a lake. 😳

bluecyclist64 said:No, the issue isn't just whether it's funny; it's the fact that you're ignoring how old this joke is. This "joke" has been circling the drain for years now.
Would you treat an artistic mural painted on a wall back in 2006 the same way you'd treat a hateful political slogan spray-painted on a fence?
Do you see the distinction there?

Look, even if it’s revolting and brutal, it still functions as a joke because it provides some sort of punchline—a twist on a setup. But that "joke" where the punchline is just a racial slur? That’s pure idiocy. The only people who could find that remotely amusing are complete morons. To appreciate actual humor, you need at least a baseline level of intelligence.

You missed the mark. The second and third jokes fall under dark humor—it’s edgy and offensive, sure, but it’s still humor. And for dark humor to work, it *has* to be edgy.
The first "joke" is just a lazy trope where the insult is the entire punchline.

Hold on a second—do you actually think this is funny?

Wait, let me ask you: do you honestly find this funny:

What do you get when someone steps in sheep droppings?

An average minority citizen.

Which version is more clever or witty? 🍿

Alright, if you've been completely brainwashed by low-brow internet trolls, then I guess your lack of wit is somewhat excusable.🎉

This is terrifying. You’re actually positioning yourself as some kind of authority on what constitutes humor. 🤦

What makes humor universal anyway? And especially your specific brand of it?

Weren't you one of the people fighting against the narrow-minded conformity of the old regime? What kind of thinking is this? Seriously?
Matthew Kern said:That's just typical liberal feminism right there.

I bet a thread about blondes will pop up next.

Neonfox12, you're the one I'm most baffled by.

This has nothing to do with feminism. Being close-minded is a state of mind, regardless of what group you belong to.

so let me circle back to my original question: is posting a photo of one's own backside with an arrow pointing toward the name of a specific individual or a member of ANY group considered spam, or is it just a tasteless joke?
That strikes me as the fundamental question regarding the culture of this community, and frankly, it’s the only thing I care about right now.

Look, sure, it’s an insult to that person, but where in any decent joke does it involve targeting a real human being?

Nicole Johnson20 said:No, I’m not playing dumb; I just don't follow the logic. In the quoted post, you claimed something wasn't appropriate for Politics but was fine for Jokes—so my question is a direct logical consequence of that reasoning.

I always operated under the assumption that a moderator's job is to judge when a post crosses the line of the forum rules, regardless of whether it's a joke or a serious statement.

It's essentially like saying you expect a moderator to decide what constitutes trolling, which is just the first step toward censorship.

This is truly appalling.

Not quite.

My grandfather lost his life at Waterloo, even though he never once stepped foot in a battle or got involved in any kind of politics. To this day, there isn't a clue where his remains actually ended up.
Jamie Davis9 said:Man, you are completely losing your focus.

I see. It’s pretty clear that when I present an argument of this caliber, this is the kind of "top-tier" rebuttal I can expect in return. 🙂

Yet, people conveniently overlook the fact that Gypsies were also unbranded victims of that very same genocide. 😁

Nicole Johnson20 said:Look, I think there’s definitely some offensive content here, but my personal feelings aren't an actual argument, nor should they influence any official decision.

My only real point is that this MAYBE violates the forum guidelines (and potentially U.S. laws, for that matter). That’s it. That’s my whole case. And as I mentioned before, I haven't even sat down to read the specific bylaws or the legal fine print. It’s not my job to manage this site or police everything that gets posted on it. 🤷

As for the historical context, I’m really not here to act as a history professor for anyone. If you want to dive deep into the past, you have those history PDFs available—you can go ask the experts over there.

But that’s not true. Why do you think dark humor constitutes an insult? That distinction is actually vital if we want to understand how this whole situation is unfolding.

Let’s be honest: the only reason you’re upset is because you feel personally targeted. Yet, it was clearly stated that dark humor doesn't play favorites; it hits everyone equally.

Actually, you're the one who needs to brush up on your history, which is why I asked. During WWII, it wasn't just Jews and Roma who suffered under the Nazi regime; Mexicans, Canadians, and Mexicans were victims too...

Jacob Williams said:And what about Mexicans? 🕺

No, they're my favorites.

Matthew Anderson said:Getting rid of dark humor is just the first step toward censorship. Once you ban one set of jokes, you inevitably have to start policing everything else.

Exactly. In general, trying to hunt down "offense" within comedy is the slippery slope that leads straight to censorship.
Nicole Johnson20 said:1. Bold—what kind of argument is that???

2. Bold—you’ve completely lost it! What argument am I supposed to weigh here, or against whom? I didn't even present a formal argument for anyone to validate or reject; my point is that people should react if rules are broken, not based on whether they agree with my specific "logic."

Man, what are you even talking about? Do you honestly think I came here to justify myself to you? And for what—to defend my "ability to think," as you put it?

3. Well, maybe it's because of historical circumstances???

Good grief, take a breath. Why all the tension over a debate about humor?

1. You can't just frame things that way—simply claiming something is offensive without explaining why doesn't work. Let others decide if something crosses the line. Explain *why* you believe this specific humor is offensive. And tell me, what happens to all the other jokes, including those about Jews that are far darker?

2. I'm having a hard time following you. What exactly is your goal with this topic?
Well, I'm speaking in front of everyone here, not just to my own humble self. Why do you think this attempt at censorship doesn't affect me too?

3. Which historical circumstances could possibly equate the experiences of Romani people with those of Jews?
Jokes about Romani people in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Jamie Davis9 said:Honestly, I think the best move here is to just forward the link directly to the local Jewish community organization, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and the ACLU. Let those folks handle the heavy lifting—they have the expertise and the standing to take it from here. 🙂

It’s certainly possible, though in my experience, those kinds of jokes rarely land unless you're specifically taking a jab at a Jew.
Nicole Johnson20 said:I’m stepping in here to address the moderators directly with a specific question. Just to be clear, I didn't come here to engage in a back-and-forth with every single jerk who decides to park themselves in my thread just to lecture me with their "arguments."

The fundamental issue I run into when we debate is that you don't seem to grasp the actual weight or definition of the words you're throwing around. It’s like trying to play a game of chess where one player keeps insisting a pawn can move like a queen—it makes having a meaningful conversation nearly impossible when the very foundation of our language isn't being respected.
It’s getting to the point where people are actually trying to compare Canadians and Mexicans to Jews and Romani people. 🤦

You have such a wonderful way with words. But look, you need to realize that you’re essentially standing in a courtroom right now, trying to defend your position against everyone in the room. The stakes here are high because how effectively you make this case is exactly what determines whether the moderators decide to actually uphold your argument. You just aren't quite grasping the situation yet.

That was a truly magnificent display of defending your position—completely devoid of any actual arguments, of course. 👏

I’m trying to draw a direct comparison between jokes targeting that specific group and jokes about the Romani, so I’m struggling to see where you're losing me. Why exactly are you equating the Romani with Jews, while simultaneously grouping Canadians and Mexicans into an entirely different category?

Jamie Davis9 said:He’s back at it again, obsessing over his own biases and friction points, while she just keeps circling back to blondes and Canadians.
Give me a break. 😁
I really tried to look at this from several different angles to shed some light on the issue, but if you ask me, here is the most contentious part:
we are talking about a public forum with clearly established rules, where moderators were specifically brought in to ensure those rules are actually enforced.

p.s. Just so there’s no misunderstanding, I’m certainly not suggesting that America is more fascist than any other nation on the planet.
In fact, I think what we see here is more of a fundamental mindset born out of sheer ignorance and helplessness. It’s like how we might treat someone from a marginalized group—viewing them as a permanent ward of the state who needs constant support, yet still feeling entitled to mock them.
What I am trying to get across is that these groups actually agree to play by these specific rules because, within the context of this particular game, they are the ones coming out on top.

I decided to bring this down to a personal level because I’ve noticed you tend to miss the point when I speak in generalities.

Honestly, it feels like you’re intentionally playing dumb. ☕

You seem to have an issue only when the topic turns to certain minority groups, treating them like sacred cows compared to how you view Mexicans, Canadians, and so on...

I have to disagree with your P.S.—humor isn't tied to nationality, consciousness, or physical condition; it’s about the clever use of unexpected twists or the play on stereotypes.

At the end of the day, how do you think Jews feel when people make jokes regarding WWII and their history?
Jokes about Romani people in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Nicole Johnson20 said:If something qualifies as hate speech—and I’m honestly asking the moderators here if it does—then it’s hate speech, whether it’s stated bluntly or "masked" behind a layer of humor. The law isn't going to give you a pass just because you wrapped your words in a punchline instead of saying them straight. I don't quite follow your logic here—are you suggesting that if it's delivered as a (bad) joke, it suddenly doesn't count?

Fundamental human liberties include the right to hold an opinion. Our ability to think for ourselves is what defines us, yet you seem to want to strip that away.

Look, if you're in a circle of like-minded people who appreciate dark humor and you make a joke at someone's expense, that's just comedy. But if that humor is specifically targeted at a minority group while they are listening, then it becomes an insult disguised by velvet gloves.

You’ve entered a discussion where the title itself explicitly states we are discussing jokes about Rome. To label that as hate speech is a stretch. 🤦
If there were a joke claiming one of our own forum members was born out of something unsavory, that would be an insult; as it stands, it isn't.

Speaking from experience—having grown up hearing all sorts of jokes about Canadians during my childhood—I can tell you it doesn't feel great when someone you barely know, who has zero connection to Canada, expresses a desire to joke about my background. My advice to you? Just laugh it off and tell a joke about whatever group that person belongs to. You can't act this soft and expect people to respect you just because of rules or legalities; respect is something you earn. Now, while some groups might not work particularly hard to earn that kind of regard, there are certainly individuals within those communities who command immense respect.

Jamie Davis9 said:Well, looking at what they’re trying to pass off as the standard, it seems like they've actually succeeded in making it stick. The only reason I haven't been penalized for it yet—if there is any reason at all—is likely due to my own ability to negotiate my way out of a corner. It’s almost like being able to talk your way through a tense meeting with HR just by knowing exactly which levers to pull. 😁

That simply isn't true.
I’ve mentioned this before, but for years there was a running discussion regarding the Roma community in Chicago. Honestly, I didn't notice any specific moderation or special interventions being made at all—not until I finally spoke up and voiced my own concerns.
And honestly, the absolute pinnacle of moderation at that point was simply shutting the whole thing down.

Perhaps it’s just a matter of timing—maybe the moderators haven't had a chance to take a look at it yet?

Wait, do you honestly believe the moderators have the bandwidth to read every single thing posted here? It’s just not realistic. If you spot something that actually crosses the line or breaks the rules, just hit the report button on the little icon. That’s how this works.

And what on earth does that topic have to do with humor?
The fact that this thread has been locked only proves one thing: it was thoroughly analyzed, and it became immediately clear that there was no actual room for meaningful discussion here.

Look, you’re splitting hairs here. You can't go around looking for perfection in everyone, and you certainly shouldn't expect every single person—or even entire groups of people—to have nothing but glowing things to say about you. Honestly, I don't hold Rome in the highest regard myself; my own professional experiences have thrown all sorts of headaches my way involving them. To me, it feels like most of them are just out to pull a fast one on you. And what, you want me to strike that from the record? Because if you start labeling every bit of blunt humor as an "insult," that's exactly where this conversation is heading.
Jokes about Romani people in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Jamie Davis9 said:I’m not disputing that part. My issue is specifically that you aren't allowed to call members of certain religious or ethnic groups on this forum anything remotely derogatory, even in jest.

You can, provided it's within a thread dedicated to jokes. But anywhere else? Absolutely not—and that goes for Rome, too. 🤦

Nicole Johnson20 said:First of all, when did I ever claim to be "normal"?

Secondly, I didn't actually have the freedom to write down my true opinion of them—because I would have been banned instantly. So yes, it seems like one-sided thinking is a universal constant.

The reason I’m asking is that I know if you insult an individual user, there are consequences. I just don't understand how *this* specific situation is categorized (is it hate speech, or what?). I am simply seeking clarification.

And please, stop flooding this thread; this isn't some dedicated debate forum. If you want to argue, take it somewhere else.

Regarding your first point, you’re essentially implying that anyone who disagrees with you is unintelligent. In reality, you’re the one being insulting here.

As for your second point, you can't really apply that logic to a thread specifically about humor directed at the Gypsy community.

Are you seriously suggesting that we should police jokes? In a thread meant for humor?
You can find out which group you belong to and enjoy the jokes made at their expense. 🤷 It’s not like you haven't laughed at someone else before...

This is absolutely a valid space for discussion—the comments themselves prove that.
Jamie Davis9 said:What you personally feel or don't feel toward anyone isn't the topic at hand.
The issue is that if we are going to patronize the Gypsy community by insisting on strict order and following rules, then we either maintain that order equally for everyone, or we let it descend into total anarchy where anyone can grab whatever they want.
I am simply advocating for clear rules.
Either we have them, or we don't.

Good grief, just recently a user here got slapped with a 500-point penalty just for picking a fight with a Gypsy woman.

And now you want to punish humor? That’s censorship. That feels like a slide back toward those old authoritarian regimes...

You are completely misinterpreting the situation and jumping to the conclusion that making jokes in a humor thread constitutes an insult.🤦

Jamie Davis9 said:I want to weigh in on this small but important protest, especially since this isn't the first time I've encountered this specific way of treating the Roma community on this forum.
I work extensively with Roma children, and quite often when I have to issue a sanction because they’ve messed up, they resort to the argument that I’m only doing it because they are Roma.
While it's perfectly normal for an American forum to feature jokes where a "gypsy" is the punchline—after all, why stifle humor?—it becomes a problem when the standard is applied inconsistently. It's nowhere near equitable. For instance, the most trivial example is that while you can jokingly call a Roma person a piece of trash just because of their background, you aren't allowed to joke about changing a politician's name here without facing punishment, let alone insulting members of other ethnic groups. If that's the case, this forum will become an inadequate place for genuine discussion and wit, and America will remain a deeply fractured society where Roma people feel fundamentally justified in their identity while everyone else hates them, and Americans simply step in to prove how right they are.
The Roma individuals I know are incredibly intelligent and resourceful; if they truly set their minds to it, they could outmaneuver any frustrated American however they pleased.
Therefore, any humor involving the Roma needs to be far more sophisticated than the average American is clearly capable of producing, and I fear the Roma community is well aware of that too.

Your argument misses the mark. Just look at the jokes told about people from Appalachia (which is where I was born), and you'll see I'm not the first one to take offense.

Or do you honestly think blondes or police officers enjoy those kinds of jokes being told about them?

You can't force humor into the mold of political correctness; that's an infringement on the right to hold an opinion. People can think whatever they want about Roma people, just as they can about Americans. You can't categorize all of that as mere insult or a lack of intelligence.

The Roma have lived their lives a certain way for centuries, and now those who have gone through the education system expect that entire history to be wiped from the collective consciousness? That doesn't happen overnight.

How much Americans "dislike" the Roma is contradicted by the fact that a member of that community was voted winner of a major reality show by the public, and was a fan favorite then and likely still is for many today.

Dark humor is often distasteful, but it is still humor, not an insult.
Jokes about Romani people in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Look, jokes like those—and that specific brand of humor in general—just aren't my cup of tea. That said, I’m incredibly sensitive when it comes to freedom of speech, which feels like something you're trying to box in here. Beyond that, you seem to be grouping yourself with the "normal" crowd while dismissing anyone who thinks differently as just plain stupid. Honestly, sorry to say, but that kind of narrow-mindedness is a bit much.

The moderators will handle their own posts, but what I was actually interested in was understanding the reasoning behind your perspective.
As far as conduct goes, insults are strictly against the rules on this forum. If you've spotted any, they probably just haven't been flagged yet—that's exactly what the report button is there for.
