Windows 10 Pro + Webcam issues in IT Support ·
wearysurfer78 said:Alright, thanks! I’m just a bit stumped on how the webcam could have died on me, especially since I made sure it was functioning fine initially (see that first photo). I bought my laptop with Windows 10 Pro already pre-installed from the manufacturer, and I haven't messed with any of the system settings or anything like that.

Check this out

That might be what you're dealing with.

On my old setup running Windows XP, I use Google Chrome. It works perfectly for me and I know my way around it. On this new Windows 10 computer, I currently have Mozilla installed along with the standard Microsoft Edge. Which one should I actually be using? Should I just go ahead and install Google Chrome again?
All my emails are tied to my Google account, and all my bookmarks are sitting right there in Chrome.
What's the best way to move those bookmarks over to a different browser?

Just a heads-up, I’m definitely not a tech expert, so please keep the answers and instructions simple enough for someone like me. 🕺

Thanks!

It’s actually very simple. https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/96816?hl=en

granitemason55 said:Look, until yesterday, my C Drive had about two-thirds of its space free. Then, overnight, it suddenly turns red, claiming I only have 13 GB left out of 244 GB. How does that even happen? In the last couple of days, the only things I’ve downloaded are three movie converter programs, and those don't typically take up much room, let alone these ones.

When I tried to open Photoshop—which I use every single day and basically depends on my livelihood—it wouldn't even let me start a new document because it kept throwing a "scratch disks are full" error. My computer is essentially useless right now; I'm completely blocked.

I've already nuked most of my movies, cleared everything out of the Recycle Bin, deleted several massive .psd files, and tossed out some old downloads and unused software, but the available space hasn't budged a single millimeter.

What should I do?

Just download this tool https://windirstat.net/ and you'll see exactly what's eating up your drive.

I just set up a new account and logged in without any issues. Is there a way to migrate all my data from my old profile over to this new one?

Navigate to your drive, go into the Users folder, and open up your old profile directory. Once you have it open, simply copy whatever files you need—Downloads, Documents, Music, Videos, Favorites, Desktop, etc.—and paste them into their respective folders within the new profile. After you've moved everything, take some time to reconfigure your settings in the new account (email, browser settings, and anything else tied to your specific setup). Only once you are absolutely certain everything is transferred should you delete the old profile. To do that, right-click on "This PC" and select Properties. In the window that pops up, look for "Advanced system settings" on the left side and click that. A new window will appear; under the Advanced tab, you'll find User Profiles. That’s where all the profiles are listed, and that is where you can delete the old one. I'll say it again: do not delete the old profile until you have successfully migrated every single setting and file to the new one.🙂
EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard - Urgent! in IT Support ·
granitemason55 said:About two weeks ago, I made a bit of a mess of things and accidentally deleted a folder filled with some incredibly precious photos. To make matters worse, I cleared them out of the Trash right after.

I didn't even realize what had happened until I went to check on that folder yesterday. Half the pictures were missing, and I foolishly assumed I’d just moved them into a subfolder instead of copying and pasting them like I usually do. Then, in my confusion, I ended up deleting that subfolder too.

After a frantic Google search for solutions, I stumbled upon and installed EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. I tried running the full scan option—the one that scans the entire computer—and let it run overnight. Unfortunately, after eleven grueling hours, the progress was practically non-existent; it had barely managed to scan about a tenth of my hard drive before hitting a complete standstill.

In an attempt to be more efficient, I tried the quick and guided options, searching specifically by the folder name both with and without specific parameters, but the software just kept telling me "not found."

I then pivoted back to the full scanning method, this time attempting to use a keyword search, but the software gave me a "not found" error almost immediately at the start of the process.

I am honestly quite baffled by the whole situation. During that first marathon scan—which I eventually abandoned because it froze up and felt like it was taking forever—I did see that it had indexed over 71,000 files, ranging from 2014 all the way up to the present day. I took a little peek at the results, but my specific folder was nowhere to be seen.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Should I perhaps try a different piece of software? It feels incredibly strange that the program can find files from years ago, yet somehow swallowed this recently deleted folder into a bottomless abyss.

There's a ton of junk listed here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filere...y-programs.htm
Personally, I think EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard and Recuva are the best bets. 🙂

when I try to run System Protection (see image 2), it takes me to image 3 where I have to select "Turn on system protection...". From there, it moves to image 4 where I choose "Click to open system," but then the "System" window pops up without any "System Protection" button available to click.
Hopefully, that makes sense.🤦

None of that is going to work then. You might want to try creating a completely new user account and logging into it; that should tell you immediately if the issue lies with Windows itself or if your specific user profile is just broken. If it's a Windows issue, you're likely looking at a full reinstall. If it's just the profile, you'll need to migrate your data over to the new one and delete the corrupted profile.

Kenneth Allen11 said:There’s no "System Protection" listed, just "Device Manager," "Remote settings," and "Advanced system settings."

What happens if you just type "system restore" directly into the search bar? Does anything actually pop up?

Kenneth Allen11 said:Hey, my laptop is constantly plugged in. I tried running a system restore, but it looks like system Protection is turned OFF. 😕 It says "system Protection turned OFF," and I’m having a hell of a time actually finding where to toggle it back on based on the instructions I've been following.
1. Go ahead and click to open System.

2. Head over to the left pane and select System protection. You’ll likely need admin rights to move forward here. If a prompt pops up asking for an administrator password or a quick confirmation, just go ahead and enter the credentials or hit confirm to proceed.

3. Under Protection Settings, select the drive and hit Configure.

4.Choose one of the following:

If you want to roll back your system configuration or recover older versions of your files, just head over and click "Restore system settings and previous versions of files."

If you want to limit the action specifically to restoring earlier file versions, just hit the "Only restore previous versions of files" option.

5. Hit OK, then just click OK one more time to wrap it up.

The issue is that I either don't have it, or I simply can't find it.😕 Regarding point 2, "system Protection"—if you’re looking to get that switched back on or enabled, here is how you handle it.

Any advice...?

Right-click on "This PC" and select Properties. Once that window pops up, look at the left-hand side; you should see an option for system Protection sitting right underneath Remote Settings.

Kenneth Allen11 said:Hey there,

I'm looking for some expert advice here. I have an HP EliteBook 8460 running Windows 7 Professional SP1. Everything was working perfectly until today, but now, right after I turn it on and before the login screen actually shows up, I get hit with a "logging off" message. Then the login screen pops up, but as soon as I try to log in, the whole loop starts over—it just keeps saying "logging off" and cycling back to the login screen. I've been scouring the web for a fix, but my English isn't great, so I'm basically just clicking around aimlessly. I did try hitting F8 to boot into Safe Mode, and everything works fine in there. Has anyone dealt with something like this before? Any ideas on how to fix it?

It’s possible the battery is acting up; try pulling it out and running the laptop strictly on AC power. Hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds until it shuts down completely. Then, try booting it up again. It could also be a driver issue or a problem with Windows itself. In that case, the smartest move would probably be to run a System Restore to a point when everything was still functioning correctly.

Samuel Rodriguez10 said:Look, anyone who actually knows their way around a network should find this easy—how do I connect to a server from another machine on the same network?
The hardware setup is solid, cables and all, but I’m stuck on what to type into the address bar. I’ve attached a shot of how it looks on my old PC, but now that I've got this new one, I can't seem to locate the server (S:) at all.
Anyone got a clue?

The standard way is to just type "\\servername" into the search bar or the "Run" dialog. If you need to map a specific drive, you'd include that detail too, like: \\servername\c$

Thomas Sanchez30 said:Alright, I'll give it a shot tomorrow. But honestly, why bring up malware when this machine is running a fresh, clean install of Windows?

By the way, I noticed we're technically in the hardware thread, yet the conversation seems to have drifted almost entirely toward software issues—so, if the moderators want to move this to a different section, feel free.

You could just download Blue Screen View and run a scan with it. It'll show you exactly what's triggering the Blue Screen of Death.

Nicole Newman15 said:I finally let it run, and it churned through 99 updates. This afternoon, it started another couple, and every single time I shut down my computer, it’s still working on something. I mean, fine, I'll let it finish, but I don't get it. I used Windows 7 before and never dealt with this. I have no idea how long this is going to last or if this constant activity is just mandatory for Windows 7.

The initial wave of updates right after a fresh installation usually takes forever—though that depends entirely on your hardware specs—so you really just have to let it finish its business. Alternatively, you could download all the updates offline to cut down the waiting time.

Thomas Sanchez30 said:A friend of mine has been dealing with constant Blue Screen of Death (Windows 10) issues, so she handed her machine over to me to see if I could play technician.

My plan was straightforward—keep it simple and avoid unnecessary headaches by 😁 wiping the hard drive and performing a completely fresh installation of Windows. It seemed like an easy win: just kick off the install, catch a movie while the progress bar crawls along, and call it a day. 😉 Besides, that was actually what she wanted; the system was cluttered with absolute junk anyway.

Well, plans change. Now the OS is pristine—freshly installed, nothing on there except for the drivers that Windows automatically pulled in—yet the damn problem persists.

Basically, about two or three minutes after booting up, the blue screen hits:

"😢 Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’re just collecting some info, and then we’ll restart for you. If you would like to know more, you can search online later for this error: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA – snp2uvc.sys"

I did some digging online and stumbled upon this: http://www.solvusoft.com/en/files/bs...r/snp2uvc-sys/ (I'm referring to the article itself, not the software they're trying to peddle for download)

I went through their ten-step guide, and when I reached step 10: Perform a Clean Installation of Windows, I noticed this warning:

please Note: If snp2uvc.sys errors still persist after a clean install of Windows, your SYS problem MUST be hardware related. If that is the case, then it is likely you will need to replace the associated hardware causing the snp2uvc.sys error.

So, we're looking at a hardware failure, but which component? What's the next move here? The machine is a Fujitsu laptop.

P.S. I ran a check disk, but it didn't flag anything—it just rebooted normally without any specific error messages—so I'm assuming the hard drive is fine.

I also ran a system scan (sfc /scannow), but it came up clean.

The issue doesn't trigger in Safe Mode. But once it boots up normally, after maybe two or three minutes—I haven't timed it perfectly, but it seems to happen consistently shortly after Windows fully loads—that blue screen pops up again.

You could try removing that driver (from what I can tell, it's camera-related) or updating it to a newer version.
Where did my Windows 10 Start menu go? in IT Support ·
fadedbear92 said:Great, so now that I’ve followed Microsoft’s own instructions to "reset to default settings," they went ahead and wiped my entire Office 2016 installation along with a whole bunch of other stuff 🤦

My bad for not mentioning that earlier, but there’s usually a warning right there about the exact same thing. Since you're dealing with those typical "which error is which" headaches that always pop up during a Windows upgrade, the smartest move is honestly just a clean install. It saves you the trouble later when things inevitably go sideways again. As for the programs that got wiped out—like your Office 2016 suite—just reinstall them. They'll activate themselves automatically once you're back up and running.

It’s also acting weird with the taskbar icons—if I try to click ones that used to be in the menu, they pop up for a second and then immediately vanish.

Does anyone have any clue how to fix this?

By the way, the issue from that previous thread is still hanging around, too.

You can solve all of these issues by refreshing Windows. Just type "reset" into the search bar and run the reinstall.
Emily Green66 said:So, if I open Disk Management to run that Initialize process you suggested, should I go with MBR or GPT?
Won't that just wipe the whole drive?

I haven't tried it yet because I wasn't sure what it actually does. I was worried that once I hit that button, the drive would be formatted and then I'd be stuck without any way to get my files back.

Yeah, doing it that way will effectively format the drive. Your best bet is to try recovering the data first using different software—stuff like EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard or MiniTool Partition Recovery. The real question is whether those tools will even recognize the drive at all. Alternatively, you could try using a partition tool like Partition Wizard to see if you can just manually assign a drive letter.
Emily Green66 said:I went through all three scanning methods, but it keeps showing this every single time 😢

Have you tried to Initialize the drive via Disk Management? And obviously, make sure you assign it a drive letter.
Emily Green66 said:Hi there,

I have a 2TB WD My Book Essential hard drive.
When I plug it into my laptop, the drive starts spinning, but it doesn't show up with an assigned letter in My Computer. In Disk Management, it shows up as unallocated.

When I open Disk Management, this happens.

The hardware itself isn't important to me, but it would be great if I could recover the data from it.

I've already tried a few different programs online, but nothing is working (EaseUS partition recovery, MiniTool power data recovery, Recuva doesn't even recognize the drive is plugged into the PC, and GetDataBack reports a bad disk and found absolutely nothing).

Acer Aspire V3 Win 10
Win 10
I am using the original 3.0 cable connected to a 3.0 port.

Thanks!

Try this approach: http://www.networkpcworld.com/recove...ed-disk-error/
Download the software, run it, perform a scan, and then mount the problematic drive. Create a folder and transfer the data from the mounted drive into it. Once you've successfully recovered everything, you can go ahead and Initialize it by selecting MBR. After that, just assign a drive letter and you should be all set. 🙂
