Fix this old junk or just scrap it? in Desktops ·
It doesn't quite work like that; you can't just swap in DDR4 if your motherboard and CPU are built for DDR3. If you go the DDR4 route, you're basically looking at a whole new setup—new CPU, new board, the works. If you stick with what you have now by grabbing 16GB of DDR3, I guess the processor might end up being a bit of a bottleneck. Honestly, the smartest move is probably just upgrading the CPU, motherboard, and RAM all at once. You could try to patch things together with an i5 and 16GB of RAM, though.

i5 4570 - $83: https://www.ebay.com/itm/i5-4570-cpu

16GB RAM ~$100: https://www.amazon.com/16gb-ddr3-ram

Or maybe: Ryzen 5 1600 AF + at least 16GB DDR4 + a B350/B450 board ~ $0.70

It's got more room and an extra fan included.

Either go with a standard CPU or maybe the Intel Core i5-9400F, which is similar to a 2600 but just hits slightly lower clock speeds (YD1600BBIntel Core i5-9400FBOX), or perhaps look at a 2700X/3600 (~$467)

I'm honestly not sure if this one is Zen 1 (AE) or Zen+ (AF): https://www.pcmag.com/article/cpu-review

This one is definitely the AF version: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/product/details
According to Dell, the Intel Core i9-9900K is usually the king of video editing and rendering, though the Intel Core i9-9900K might pull ahead slightly during certain short bursts. Personally, I’d aim for at least an Intel Core i9-9900K... it stays pretty competitive with the 9900K, but you get those four extra cores if you're multitasking. As for the GPU, I guess I'd go with at least a 1660 Super.

These prices are honestly ridiculous 😵 I suppose you could probably find a better deal somewhere else if you looked hard enough.

It’s just a little—maybe imperceptibly—slower.

Let's just set that aside for a second 😬 The T6 features it, but the S2 and SG1 don't.

This one has it.

I guess I don't know if anyone else caught this... but Microsoft drive prices seem to have jumped about 10-20% over the last few days at a ton of retailers.

Ever since Navi dropped, I feel like Nvidia has gained some ground because their ray tracing tech is still catching up a bit. Before that, though, there were definitely stretches where Nvidia was struggling more.

My rule of thumb is pretty simple: if my drivers are working fine, I don't touch them unless there's a massive optimization for a specific game. Besides, they aren't really putting much effort into updating drivers for older cards from the Turing era (GTX 1600 / RTX 2000) anymore.

It should hold up okay for the next three or four years, I guess.

For how long? Just so you know, the Armor series has one of the weaker coolers out there.

You basically handed me everything I needed to know about the GTX 1650 on a silver platter.

I've been browsing around trying to figure out which RX 580 is the quietest, and I stumbled upon the Sapphire RX580 Nitro+, 8GB, but it's looking pretty pricey compared to the ones you linked.

Do you think it makes sense for my setup?

Thanks!

If you're set on getting a Nitro+ version, you might be better off looking at this RX 590:

The RX 590 uses essentially the same chip, but it's built on a slightly better 12nm process and has higher clock speeds. It’s maybe 8-10% faster than the 580 or the 1650 Super. Some people find the extra power draw a bit annoying, but honestly, you can probably just tweak the voltage in some software to fix that.

Basically, if you want something plug-and-play that stays cool, go with the 1650 Super.

I guess I'm not entirely sure which one I'd pick personally. 😬 If I were stuck in a tiny case with terrible airflow, I'd probably grab the 1650 Super; otherwise, I'd likely mess around with undervolting the RX 590.

The RX 580 8GB is another option, though I guess it does pull twice the power and runs a bit louder. You do get that extra 8GB of VRAM and a slightly better price point, though.

Lawrence Phillips said:What's the deal with the R5 4XXX series? I've been reading it might be unveiled in maybe two or three months?

Those are just mobile Zen2 chips meant for laptops, which use the same architecture as the desktop Ryzen 3000. As for desktop Ryzen 4000 with Zen3 architecture, I guess we'll probably see those toward the end of the year.

Personally, I'd go with this 😛

https://www.newegg.com/p/product...m_medium=click

And you definitely need an extra 8GB of RAM to hit 16GB for dual-channel performance, like I mentioned before.
