This setup is just a little bit weaker than the one I put together earlier.
'I'm running an Intel Core i3-4130 with 16GB of RAM and an EVGA GeForce GTX 970; GTA 5 hits about 40fps at 1080p with max settings and 2x MSAA enabled'
If you go with the R9 380 x, you're definitely going to need a new power supply. A GTX 960 might work, though it's maybe 15-20% slower. I'd also suggest picking up a better cooler and trying to overclock that CPU to around 4.2GHz, just because you might run into a bit of a bottleneck otherwise.

It’s basically the same deal as the build from ADMu, though I guess they don't include a cheap cooler in their package...
Intel Core i7-4770K processor (16MB Cache, up to 4.20 GHz), LGA 1150 socket ASUS Prime Motherboard, sAM3+ socket. The SCYTHE Tatsumi, SCTTM-1000B, works with sockets like 775, 1150, 1155, 1156, 1366, 2011, AM2, AM3, FM1, and FM2. It runs at about 300 ± 200rpm. I guess that’s roughly 25. The SanDisk X300 256GB SSD is a 2.5” 7mm drive using SATA 6 Gbit/s. You’re looking at read/write speeds of 520 MB/s and 470 MB/s, with random read/write IOPS at 91K/57K. It comes with a 5-year warranty, I guess. DDR3 8GB (1x8GB) PC3-12800 1866MHz CL10 Corsair Vengeance, HX318C10FB/8
If you pair an 896MB card with a 1792MB one, you're really only getting the 896MB capacity.
You can't mix and match different graphics cards. I think that kind of thing—like trying to combine AMD and Nvidia—has only started showing up in the most recent generations.
I guess we're looking at an Intel Core i5 4460. Just looking at the specs for this Gigabyte Radeon R9 380 x gaming GDDR5—980MHz/5700MHz, PCI-E 3.0 x16, with DP and HDMI. It seems like a decent little card, I guess. Maybe a Raid with PSU 550? It looks like we're talking about the Gigabyte GA-B85M3333HHA motherboard. Patriot Blast 240 GB SSD, 2.5", 7mm.
If you're working with a weaker power supply, maybe go for the GTX 960, otherwise an R9 380 might be better. I'd suggest sticking to the 2GB versions or just jumping to the R9 380X, since the 4GB models for both the GTX 960 and the R9 380 are priced way too close to the R9 380X anyway.
A bit of an upgrade, I suppose... You can actually overclock Pentiums on most H81/B85 and other non-Z boards, which might just push them past the 4GHz mark.

If you just want something for messing around, but want a much better setup, you could grab a case with 4 fans and a plexiglass side panel, a modern Intel i5, DDR4 RAM, and system speed boosted by one of those top-tier budget SSDs. 😬
