If it’s still in stock, though it is 28cm long... I guess you could maybe remove some of the HDD cages?

Their selection is pretty weak when it comes to graphics cards, and maybe a few sockets over at Micro Center too.
But honestly, it’s becoming a solid option for people living in places like Indianapolis who don't want to trek into New York City because they're worried about warranties. Plus, those installment plans are actually decent. 🙂

HD 7870 = AMD Radeon R9 270
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 is just a tiny bit slower than the HD 7870, and if you compare it to the AMD Radeon R9 270, the gap is actually wider since the drivers have improved so much. Still, $267 seems like a pretty decent deal for a GTX 660. From what I can tell, Best Buy doesn't have any NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760s left in stock... you can grab a GTX 960 for around $1650-$583.
By the way, didn't you already have an i5? 😁

Well, from what I've seen, an EVGA 550 W handled the FX 8350 and R9 290 without any issues. This CPU seems a bit more efficient, especially if you're doing a little overclocking (since it doesn't need nearly as much voltage). He could always grab a Corsair RM750 for about $350 if he's really worried about 🤣

Here’s what Robert Rodriguez2 suggested—you just need to swap out the power supply and the RAM:

It’s higher quality, plus you get a 5-year warranty.

That should save you about $10...

Hmm... the TR2 Gold 600 w? I know it isn't even semi-modular, but it doesn't have an overwhelming amount of connectors either—just 6 SATA ports (you'll likely use two), 2 PCIe cables (which you'll definitely need for the GPU), and 4 Molex leads (though you could always daisy-chain your fans to those if that works better for you).

The power supply could probably be an upgrade. If you let us know where you usually shop, we might be able to suggest something better.

If you're looking for an alternative to the 970 A-UD3P, the Asus M5A97 R2 is right there in the center of things, and you've got a ton of RAM options starting from $70. 😛

55°C under load feels like an icebox 🤣 I’m seeing 35°C at idle and hitting 80°C under load—which is basically the stock temperature threshold where the fans start ramping up.

Well, this isn't looking great. The tires have completely lost their heat. It looks like everyone’s going to be switching over to the option tires now.

Why go with Hyper when you could grab an XFX TS 550 w for the same price, or even a TT 80+ Gold for just a little $6.75 more? 😛
Kimberly Gomez34 said:Look, an i5 is definitely sufficient; I'm just pointing out that when you look at the price-to-performance ratio for your specific tasks, those other two options are much better value.
As for the GPU, it really depends on the software you're running—whether it utilizes hardware acceleration, NVIDIA CUDA cores, and things like that—but generally speaking, more memory is always better.
You don't need a powerhouse card unless you're doing nothing but GPU rendering. Back in the day, the GTX 650 was the absolute sweet spot for price versus performance; anything above that didn't offer a significant jump in power for the average mainstream programs most people actually use. Since that's gone, the gtx 750 has stepped up as its successor (and it's faster, obviously).
An SSD is also a massive priority. You could put together something similar to what Robert Rodriguez2 suggested, maybe something like a gtx 750 paired with a 240GB OCZ Arc 100 SSD.
You might be able to squeeze in a xeon (a non-K i7 without integrated graphics), but not if you want an SSD:
You might even grab a 3% discount on that total if you click here

The GT 740 is really just a rebranded GTX 650 😉

The monitor is on eBay 300$ (around $733), so I guess $500 might be doable.
CPU Cooler Recommendations?
in Desktops ·
You won't be able to overclock on a B75 board since you can't mess with the multiplier. Plus, starting with Sandy Bridge, Intel's CPUs make it pretty much impossible to tweak the BCLK, so you aren't going to see anything beyond 100MHz anyway.
You could grab that cooler ($133 over at Micro Center), though I guess you could find something a bit cheaper that would still get the job done.
