It’s that emphasized 'BUT' right in the middle of the sentence that bugs me—you know? I've noticed American celebrities do that all the time during interviews. ☕
I love it when people talk about something deep—they kind of drift off for a second and just get lost in thought.
But man, I can't stand it when someone keeps their eyes locked on yours without breaking away while they speak. It makes me feel like they’re lying or trying to force an idea down my throat... you know, that intense stare that just pierces right through you?

How do you guys feel about it? When someone's talking, do you actually like having them stare you down the whole time? 🤷
Honestly, when women swear—especially if they have a pretty limited vocabulary—it’s just a total turn-off. It only works for me if they’re super eloquent.
With guys, though? I don't know, the swearing just feels more natural.

Oh, and one more thing—I can't stand it when people close their eyes for a second while they're talking. It's always felt incredibly arrogant to me for some reason. 🤷
I read somewhere that people who talk fast are often pegged as being smarter—even though half the time they’re just rambling about nothing at all. (😁 )
On the flip side, I’ve noticed that when someone talks slow, people immediately assume they aren't as competent... and honestly, it's easy to lose focus listening to them.
I also read that slow talkers get labeled as "slow thinkers." (I'll admit, I catch myself doing that too. ☕)
But that isn't always true—sometimes it’s actually the exact opposite.

I really want to dive into speech styles and how nonverbal cues play into it.

For me, I definitely appreciate someone with a quick wit, but I also love a steady, moderate volume. Thin, high-pitched voices? Total dealbreaker for me.
And don't even get me started on people who laugh way too hard at their own jokes. That's pretty much everything I can think of. 🤔

So, what do you guys look for in a conversationalist—and what drives you crazy?
Have you noticed specific traits that make you instantly favor someone? Or maybe things that make you write them off right away?
Or more on the negative side?
🤷

briskhound2 said:This just tells me you didn't even bother checking out the original thread—which has like, over 700 posts in it. Seriously? People there are actually recommending... Seen them all. They’re sharing their takes and giving out ratings, right? But since you added "recent" to the title, it kind of narrows the scope—is that how it works? Like, if someone watched a doc just last month, they can't post in your thread and have to move over to this other one instead?

If it’s all basically the same stuff—then why even bother having a "recently watched" thread on FilmBuff instead of just one massive, unified movie discussion? Makes zero sense, right?

Whatever—my point isn't even the same as that documentary recommendation thread... anyway.
Let me break down the differences.

Based on the recommendations:

People are always hunting for good documentaries—anyone else?
They’re all listing stuff they watched like ten years ago—as if anyone actually remembers that much? Who even knows anymore?
It’s just a laundry list—nothing more than a bunch of random points thrown together, right?

on the topic of reviews—

People just give off this vibe like they just finished watching something—you know, while they're still totally buzzing from it?
It’s mostly just reviews of the newer documentaries lately—is that all we're doing now?
People were just sharing their takes—there was always this vibe where everyone wanted to jump in and debate it, you know?
So, they actually give documentaries ratings now? Like, who even decides that?
They don't just spam you with lists or beg you to watch stuff—you know what I mean?

Who even recognized it? Even people on the forums were pointing out there was already an identical thread. It only got like 50 views before I moved it—it sat there for almost a week with just 8 posts total.

Why are you lying now?? What do you mean "forum users"? Only one guy even said that. After getting totally ignored by everyone else, he just kept sharing his thoughts—is that really such a crime?
People just aren't watching documentaries like they used to—which is why there's way less written about them now. But honestly? All those old posts on that other thread were just... different. Way more interesting, you know?

It wasn't even deleted—honestly. Every single post, from the very first one to the last, is still right there—they just got moved over to the actual relevant thread, you know? It’s way easier to read now, much more organized, and actually informative.

Nah. It’s just a complete mess—total chaos, honestly. How are you even supposed to make sense of it?
And she's only reading it because there's nothing else to do—right?

Seriously? I honestly think what you're writing is just total nonsense—like, I truly don't get who you're even trying to convince.
Or do you actually think we're that stupid? 🤷

When someone says... Anyone got any recs for movies like Alien? Looking for that same vibe—maybe something with an extraterrestrial lurking in the shadows?Look, other users should just stick to listing titles. No reviews or deep dives needed. If someone’s gonna post about a movie they haven't even watched—well, those are supposed to be actual impressions, because we're deleting those mindless "this was awesome" posts. Get it now? Your topic would actually be cool if the documentary recommendation thread was strictly recommendations... but since you didn't really read the rules, you didn't see that it's already full of reviews, thoughts, suggestions, and ratings. It basically boils down to you just wanting things your way. And honestly? Having two identical threads isn't just redundant—it's pointless.

Look, when someone drops a doc recommendation into a massive pile of random titles, nobody actually sits down to write reviews or share their deep thoughts on it. So—honestly? What you're doing here just doesn't really make sense.

briskhound2 said:Ever feel like writing about documentaries is just... a lot? Anyway, check this one out. unified This thread is all about documentaries—keep it simple, right? Just dive in.

If that’s how it works—then why not just bundle the movie reviews in with the recommendation threads? Wouldn't it make more sense to just have one big, unified topic for both recommendations and reviews? Just keep everything together... right?
Is it working or what?

Same goes for documentaries—those are two totally different beasts.
Why does it work one way in this case, but totally different in the other?

If you’re gonna claim it's all the same topic—then fine, be consistent. If we're talking movie reviews, just bundle them with the recommendations too? Let people actually talk... wouldn't that be fair?

So, someone actually went back and watched a documentary related to the topic I originally posted—but honestly, how can anyone have a real conversation in this mess? Every time we try to dive deep into something serious, someone jumps in begging for animal documentaries or whatever else... it's exhausting. How are we even supposed to keep a thread organized or follow a discussion at this point? It’s impossible.

You guys basically nuked a great discussion. Probably just to make your own workload lighter, right?
And honestly, that’s pretty shady.

Hey there

I started this whole PDF thread—basically an "experience review" of recent documentaries I've watched—where I put in a ton of work so people could actually review, rate, and share their real takes on them.
Then yesterday, some guy posted in that thread for that exact reason, but instead of staying put, his post got moved over to the general documentary recommendations thread where people just list titles. There’s zero rating or actual deep thought happening there.

My thread was meant for something totally different. It was specifically about *recent* docs—I made that clear from the jump, and people definitely picked up on it. It was super organized and engaging, way more interesting than that messy recommendation thread that's sitting there now without any real structure. And honestly, it was clearly working—people were posting photos, giving ratings, and sharing really cool insights.
So, I genuinely don't get why a moderator would just delete it without saying a word or even checking in first?
And that one post from last night? It just got quietly shuffled over to the other thread. 😲 (It doesn't even fit there, since nobody actually reviews anything in the recommendations section.) I'm honestly pretty shocked. I just don't understand the logic behind how the moderators handled this. I mean, on other subforums, if a topic is well-made and people are actually interested, they don't just yank it away whenever a mod feels like it.
That’s why I’m asking you guys to please restore my thread—there is clearly a demand for it. 🙂 Plus, if you look at that other thread, it’s mostly just people begging for suggestions. It isn't a space for reviews or real impressions at all.
Thanks.
James Garcia50 said:Rectify, check it out. Two seasons are out and it's great—you'll love it.

Gotta go scrape together a list once I find my notepad.

Not everyone wants dry realism...

Would a series based on a Tolstoy novel even be worth remembering?

Realism and being "realistic" aren't even the same thing—I wasn't talking about the style, just whether the characters actually feel like real people.
Do you even read what anyone else writes, or are you just stuck in your own head? 🤷
TV shows today offer everything a movie does—plus they have that massive edge where they actually capture real life, character psychology, and how people interact way more authentically since you get to live with them over a much longer stretch.

Think of series as the modern novels, while movies are more like short stories.

Sarah Mendoza90 said:I finally sat down to watch it yesterday—sadly, I missed it for the longest time. I meant to see it as soon as I heard about it, but life just got in the way... though it’s been on my mind lately, especially given how tragic it is that the director who captured this film took his own life. What a waste.

A well-deserved Oscar—between the storytelling, those stunning shots, and that incredible soundtrack, it's just perfect.

Yeah, there are definitely those types of people—those quiet souls who don't feel the need to chase the spotlight, who are okay with not being "stars," just living their lives while carrying this massive, hidden depth inside them. It’s the kind of movie that hits you with tears and triumph all at once... but somehow, when it's over, you just feel like a winner.

Beautifully put. Honestly, it’s a movie about a man so humble it almost makes you feel self-conscious just watching him.
Just pure perfection.
