I just finished my own deep dive after catching it earlier today. Look, I’m not going to join the mob on RT and crucify the thing like they are, but let’s be honest: the movie is fundamentally broken. It feels like they lost about 20 or 30 minutes of crucial footage somewhere along the way during editing.

Now, that's a rating I reserve for truly spectacular films, and I don't see how SOW could possibly fit into that category. It’s a film that tries so incredibly hard to be great, but it just doesn't quite land. Aside from the visual aesthetic, which does work, it leaves such an empty impression that it actually gives me a bit of a headache. And don't even get me started on the heavy-handed clichés. There isn't any real emotional connection to the story, which means you never truly connect with it as a viewer. It's a love story that has been told much better a million times over. The acting is solid, certainly, but it's just not enough to save the narrative.

I can’t shake the feeling that this year—especially leading up to autumn—has been a bit of a letdown when it comes to quality films actually making it through our distribution channels and hitting the US box office. Things are finally picking up steam just in time for festival season, but honestly, it feels like the summer blockbusters completely missed the mark.

That's why 5 recommendations from this year deserve way more attention than they actually received, if you ask me.
