Jean-Michel Jarre - Waiting for Cousteau 46:53

image

This one is a bit of a deep cut compared to his usual stuff. It’s pretty much an outlier in his discography, released back in 1990. The whole thing really centers around this epic, 47-minute ambient title track that acts as the massive heart of the record.

Tracklist

1 Calypso 8:23
2 Calypso Part 2 7:10
3 Calypso Part 3 (de Siècle) 6:29
4 Waiting for Cousteau 46:53

Look, we all know how massive he became after dropping Oxygene back in 1976. He spent the rest of the 80s churning out hits that basically became the gold standard for instrumental music—real evergreen classics. But if you ask me? This title track is actually his most impressive and mature work. It’s where he really found his footing.
Arthur Brown6 said:You’ve actually inspired my next "Album of the Week" pick. It’s another German artist—going back a bit further this time—and once again, we're looking at an electronic record. This one was incredibly influential within certain niche circles. The coolest part? It was basically captured in a single session using just a few instruments, no software involved. It was released raw, without any heavy overdubbing or cutting, and honestly, it's just brilliant.

Could it be this one?

I honestly went into this thinking that Love & Rockets or Prefab Sprout would easily come out on top, mostly just because their reputations carry so much weight compared to the competition—which, if you ask me, felt a bit obscure. But hey, I guess I was wrong again...😁

Still, to have ten people gather... Something truly Genius (under the label Thirty Birds).

Bernhard Guenter - Un peu de neige salie (1993)

👍👍👍👍👍

Honestly... I never in my wildest dreams thought someone here would even bring this up.
It seems I was being a bit too self-important, thinking it was just a handful of Guenterov's CDs plus a few more or less connected "musicians"—basically the experimental crowd back then—listening to this specific album.😁
I suppose that’s because back then, pressings topped out at maybe 500 to 1,500 copies.

It really is such a shame that this likely won't catch on, but then again, this is a pure headphone listening experience. You can't really define that within conventional terms; you either feel it, or you don't.

Alright, I just received a suggestion for an album that honestly exists in its own league entirely...👍👍👍

......I know this probably won't fly, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.....

Borghesia - Venceremos (1986)

.....It’s honestly fascinating to me how they managed to get this released back in 1986. With that sample right at the beginning, you'd think the authorities would have hauled them in for questioning before they could even blink......😁

Looks like I managed to pull this one off right in the nick of time... just like Bonnie Raitt would say.

Since I know there’s basically a zero percent chance this ever gains any traction, I'm just posting this to give myself some closure regarding this absolute masterpiece by David McComba & Co.....

It’s a bit of a shame they didn't go with a Kiss in The Dreamhouse vibe instead of Kaleidoscope, but hey, it is what it is...😁

Looking at this lineup, it was pretty obvious that Miami would be the heavy favorite, given how much everyone loved them back in the day.
I honestly thought Metallica might give them a run for their money, but that just didn't happen.

Heh... I honestly can't believe it. First off, someone else from this forum is actually still awake—that's usually my exclusive territory. And second, someone might actually sit around waiting until 6:40 AM just to call a game? It’s almost like they think it’s a matter of life and death... 🤣

I’ll be honest, at first I didn't think The Beatles stood a prayer against this field of competitors... but man, was I wrong. It turned out to be a total nail-biter.
What a shame.

I think it’s worth jumping in on that previous suggestion. Back then, that specific record was a massive influence on so many artists over at the 4AD label, which eventually picked it up for a reissue in 1986.

It was actually a bit of a surprise when the Group known as Clan of Xymox joined the 4AD roster in the mid-80s.
Their second release with the label—Medusa (1986)—is widely viewed as the absolute peak of their early era. To this day, plenty of people still consider it their definitive masterpiece.

Just gave my vote to Boards of Canada, so hopefully that settles the debate... assuming anyone else hasn't already checked out and left us hanging.

To be perfectly honest, I actually know next to nothing about the artist or this specific album...
A quick glance at Discogs tells me it falls under the IDM umbrella—which, truth be told, I didn't even realize was a thing until I hit the wiki. But hey, if this is a logical evolution from that late 80s house and acid-house vibe leading into the whole rave craze, it might just be right up my alley.

...So, here’s that old track from my guy. I’m pretty sure it won't blow up, but hey, at least I get the satisfaction of seeing him in the lineup...

Hold on, hold on a second... suggestions aren't even supposed to be taken until Thursday, yet we've already burned through six of them between 6:29 and 9:00 this morning.
So, for all you night owls who won't be around until after noon, if you actually want a shot at being part of the competition, you better have your suggestion ready to go right at midnight on Thursday. 😁

It’s a real shame the mixing was such a mess, though. The background music is just way too loud, making it a total struggle to actually catch what they're saying. It would have been much better if it were just clean dialogue—especially since the conversation itself is actually quite engaging. It's like trying to enjoy a fine meal while someone is blasting a jackhammer right next to your table.
