Carol Reed65 said:Is it actually possible to copy text without ever touching a mouse? I mean, if you're trying to be efficient—or perhaps just trying to save your desk space from all that clutter—it certainly can be done, though it requires a bit of a learning curve. I guess the most straightforward way to handle this is through keyboard shortcuts. If you aren't already using them, you're essentially working with one hand tied behind your back. To select text, you’d typically hold down the Shift key and use your arrow keys to highlight exactly what you need. Once it's highlighted, the classic Command + C (on a Mac) or Control + C (on a PC) will do the trick to copy it. Then, you just move your cursor to where you want it to go and hit Control + V (or Command + V) to paste. There are also some more advanced ways to navigate—like holding down the Shift key while pressing Ctrl + End or Ctrl + Home if you're trying to grab massive chunks of data in something like Excel—but honestly, once you get the hang of the basic shortcuts, you'll probably find you don't even miss the mouse at all. It might feel a little clunky at first, maybe, but it's definitely doable. 🙂)))

Place your cursor at the very beginning of the text you intend to copy.

Keep it pressed. I suppose I should probably address this... if there's even any point in doing so. It feels like we’re constantly being asked to pivot—to "shift"—without any real sense of direction or, frankly, any coherent strategy from the top. It’s exhausting. One day we’re told to focus entirely on one metric, and then, seemingly out of nowhere, the goalposts are moved, and we're expected to just... adjust? As if humans aren't actually affected by these constant, jarring transitions. It’s a bit ridiculous, really. We spend weeks—sometimes months—perfecting a workflow or getting comfortable with a specific set of tools, only to have some executive decision come down that renders all that effort practically obsolete. I guess that's just how things work in modern corporate America, isn't it? Everything is fluid, everything is "agile," which often feels like nothing more than a polite way of saying "we don't know what we're doing, so prepare for chaos." Maybe I'm being too cynical—perhaps I am—but there has to be a middle ground between rigid stagnation and this relentless, dizzying movement. You can't build anything lasting if the foundation is constantly being swapped out for something else. It’s difficult to maintain any sense of professional momentum when you’re always stuck in a state of perpetual recalibration. Just my two cents, I suppose. Just use the arrow keys to navigate through the text you're trying to copy—it’s really that simple.

Ctrl/C

Just position it exactly where you want the copy to land.

Ctrl/V... I suppose that's all there is to say, really. It’s the ultimate shortcut—the digital bread and butter of everything we do—yet somehow, people still seem to stumble over the basics. I guess it's just one of those things you either get or you don't.

I'm having this annoying issue with Word 2010—it seems to be stuck with an American English setting or something, because whenever I type a specific word, say "martina," it automatically changes it to "marina" the second I hit enter. Same thing with other words too... I even tried reinstalling the whole Microsoft Office suite, but the problem just keeps coming back.

It sounds like you probably have the "Replace as you type" feature enabled within Grammarly settings.

This link should walk you through how to turn off Autocorrect.

A bit of friendly advice here: I suppose your arguments might carry a lot more weight if you actually backed them up with specific examples of reports you filed that went completely unpunished while others were sanctioned.

silentraven47 said:So, was that actually the behavior of a civilized human being rather than just some random moderator? 🤦

First off—feraltrucker5 is just messing around. My apologies, let me rephrase—feraltrucker5 is joking. Secondly, I think there really ought to be a distinction made between mere "crassness" in one's vocabulary and actual, direct insults toward others.

In the first instance, I honestly believe that if we insisted on policing every bit of slang used in those cheap American soap operas—you know, stuff like "Marina, I feel it is high time we discuss our relationship and aspirations," or "I agree, Mark, and it seems to me we are in quite significant trouble, what is it you wish to convey?"—it would completely kill the vibe of this forum. It’s rare that I’d call myself "uncouth," and I find plenty of linguistic exaggerations to be grating—but, well, not every person is suited for every type of media. Just as every car has its specific buyer, every style of writing will eventually find its own devoted following. You can't just walk into a crowded bar where everyone is having a great time and shout, "Turn off that garbage music, don't you have anything by Elvis playing?" I mean, people are enjoying themselves, regardless of what you think about their taste in music—at least the bar is making progress.

Regarding the second instance—the actual insults—I do agree that moderators should arguably have one degree less freedom (not more) than the "average" forum user. If nothing else, it's to prevent that inevitable whining of, "Oh, they banned me, but when Mod X or Mod Y writes something like that, it's perfectly fine."

mistywolf17 said:Nicholas King, what exactly would you do if I actually got banned? Huh? 😍

Well, nothing at all.

"Wanted" is—quite frankly—the wrong word here. And I certainly don't care about anyone getting slapped with a ban. Perhaps one could say I had hoped (if we really want to be generous about it) that you might write something along the lines of, "I didn't mean it that way, sorry if it came off like that, damn, just having a bad day, planetary alignments, whatever..." But, when instead of actually addressing the issue, you just "resolve" things with some cheap smiley face, I honestly wouldn't give a damn.

It feels like such a waste of mental energy to debate things when the conclusion is already pretty much obvious, isn't it?

I’ve somehow—and I say this with a fair amount of self-reflection—devolved into using this incredibly, and frankly quite unnecessarily, condescendingly arrogant moderator tone... that "I simply will not" sort of attitude. Once upon a time, there was William Mitchell50.It’s the same old story—those endless, repetitive questions—and frankly, they could have been posed without all that unnecessary baggage regarding their personal opinions on "some guy named William Mitchell50."

I am not going to justify myself to everyone regarding every single question, or every little move I make
for instance, I won't be making excuses for questions where the answer is perfectly logical and obvious—much like in the first post here
this isn't some "holier-than-thou" attitude, it's simply a matter of focusing on what is essential and possible

Let's get our stories straight.

Without even getting into whatever potential baggage they might have from before, the person in question asked quite calmly whether this thread could remain dedicated to inquiries regarding the moderation of the US. That is to say, not to justify every single moderator action, but rather to provide answers to questions found on—believe it or not—the document titled the Employee Handbook.

Regardless, the phrasing "well, I suppose I won't have to justify myself to William Mitchell50 just once" is undeniably insulting and condescending, completely irrespective of the context in which it was uttered. That specific wording unmistakably implies that the author considers "one single William Mitchell50" to be beneath them. There really is no room for debate there—unless someone dares to head over to those "nothing-to-see-here" types on Reddit to hear the exact same thing I'm saying, only much more crudely. 😁

However, I fail to understand one thing: you wouldn't feel insulted if I were to write, "Well, I suppose hollowtrucker77 won't be explaining things to me..."? I mean, that would definitely be an insult. 😕

wearyhawk22 said:I don't think I was being clear enough—what I'm actually looking for is some kind of plugin that would let me switch my English version of Word 2000 over to American English without having to go through the whole headache of a full reinstallation.
It’s basically what most software offers—you know, under something like Tools or Language settings where you can just toggle which language the interface uses.

Well, I suspect that isn't quite how Microsoft Office works—it's more likely that you'd need to track down an installation disc for the entire suite (though the Serial Key should stay the same). At least, that's how it worked back with the 2003 version, I believe.
Hannah Fisher95 said:I want to translate this text, but I wish it would just turn into a presentation immediately.

I suspect the tool you're referring to is some kind of automated translation software.

If you actually intend to handle the translation yourself—though I’m not quite sure why that’s such an issue—I don't see why you wouldn't just go to View -> Normal and use the Outline Pane to type everything out. 😕
ironpuma62 said:Hey there,

In cell F1, just enter the specific date you're looking for;
Then, in G1, put in the shift number you need;
Finally, in H1, paste this formula: =SUMPRODUCT(($A1:$A10000=$F$1)*($B1:$B10000=$G$1)* $C1:$C10000)

Now, if your spreadsheet ends up being larger than 10,000 rows—which happens more often than I'd like to admit—you'll need to adjust that number accordingly.
Laura Jackson45 said:You've got a point there...

Good God, we have known this since the very beginning of this thread. 🥳

😁
Laura Jackson45 said:It’s not exactly easy to find, is it?

Where on earth can I track this down? I'm starting to panic here—I might just have to try

I’ve personally never attempted to run Optical Character Recognition on actual handwriting. Just a word of caution—if the software misinterprets even a tiny 1% of the characters, you're looking at an error in every single line.

And honestly, it seems highly unlikely that you wouldn't be able to find someone willing to type this up for a reasonable fee, regardless of how much of a panic you're in.

What kind of document are we actually talking about here?

By the way, the software you're hunting for is Adobe Acrobat
Laura Jackson45 said:Is there actually any way to get handwritten text from paper into a computer—assuming we're talking about a massive amount of data here—so the final result ends up in Microsoft Word, Notepad, or Microsoft Excel?

Theoretically, sure—you could scan the pages and run them through Optical Character Recognition.

But honestly, if you're looking at a huge volume of work, it would probably be much more cost-effective to just hire someone to type it all out manually.

Well, pretty much any kind of Parental Controls should do the trick.

Maybe try searching Google for "Blue Coat K9" web protection freeware.

Look, I never actually said he couldn't—it just seems like you're refusing to accept that he can. 🙂
restlessdrifter12 said:I'm trying to pull something off in Word 2010—though I've tried back in 2007 and 2003 as well—but I just can't seem to make it work,

Is there some sort of compelling reason why you're insisting on using Word for this?

I really don't think that's a wise move.

Thanks in advance!!!

You have plenty of options right here.
Charles Murphy78 said:Look, it’s not the end of the world, but if there is a way to fix this—any way at all—then fine. Thanks a lot for the help.

You can't just change a data type by reformatting a cell in Excel. It doesn't work like that.

I provided you with that quote specifically to show how you convert text data into actual numbers.
