P.S. Honestly, I feel like we really need to do a better job of highlighting Canadian cinema... it’s not like they lack vision or have produced any absolute masterpieces. Sure, Béla Tarr is a legend, but a few years back I sat down with some György Pálfi films and man, after that, you just walk away thinking, "God, I need more of this..." 😬

Everything I’ve seen coming out of Canada has been top-tier, and honestly, the fact that Michael Curtiz came from that tradition speaks volumes. If you want to dive in, here are a few titles worth checking out
Parkoló (2014)
Hosszú alkony (1997)
Budapesti mesék (1977)
Szerelmem, Elektra (1974)
Elöre! (2002)
Így jöttem (1965)

The cinematography in this film is just stunning; honestly, the camera work was what really grabbed me. Even though both Mary and Andrew give such incredible performances, her portrayal of a girl trapped in her own psychological struggles is just masterfully done. Because she’s navigating those raw, newfound emotions—things like love and friendship—for the first time, everything feels so much more intense than it would for a typical person. I can't be sure if I've fully grasped the depth of her backstory, though, since we don't know anything about where she came from, which I assume isn't really meant to be shown...

I’m on the same page as the previous two posters and most of the crowd above. Honestly, I think the directing really missed the mark here because none of the characters actually land... They really needed much deeper characterization and a lot more insanity to make this work.

Personally, I found this much more enjoyable than Black Forest. While the dialogue felt somewhat mediocre, the direction wasn't half bad. My main gripe is the lack of character depth; the writing was so thin that even the father's motivations failed to land, no matter how hard he tried to sell them to me. Then there's the whole issue of where

Spoiler

that group of mercenary fighters[ /SPOILER] even came from... It's obvious they had a higher production budget and a better eye for cinematography, but certain scenes just fall flat and feel completely out of place for this kind of movie. It honestly feels like the director started out aiming for a gritty, serious thriller before suddenly pivoting toward some sort of trashy comedy halfway through...

17 It feels like we're finally standing at the threshold of something significant... just sitting here, staring at the screen, trying to find the right way to frame this whole mess. It’s hard to know where to begin when everything feels so layered and heavy, almost like you're wading through thick fog before the sun even thinks about breaking through... I suppose this is just the opening act, the quiet before whatever storm we're heading toward actually hits us. There isn't much else to say yet, so I'll just leave it at that for now...

At least, that's how I deal with deadlines... though maybe that isn't the issue here. Perhaps we've just been suggesting uninspiring albums lately? 🙂

I can't speak for everyone else, but personally, I try my best to boycott all that hipster nonsense—at least the extreme kind. I just don't have much of an appetite for that sort of thing.
