We don't really use it that way in San Diego; we certainly don't think "disciplining" implies a physical brawl, though everyone knows what it implies 😁
It sounds like you might have picked that up from people living somewhere even further south than San Diego 😁

I have to admit, I’m finding myself running into more and more trouble whenever I try to communicate with people from California. Honestly, they seem to speak a dialect that is even harder for me to parse than the folks up in Ohio! Have you ever been in a situation at college, at work, or even just out in a social circle where you completely lost the thread because someone was using a heavy regional accent? It gets pretty awkward, doesn't it? I often wonder if it isn't actually the responsibility of the speaker to make an effort to use standard American English, just to be fair and maintain a certain level of academic or professional decorum 🙂

Take what happened to me today, for instance. I’m standing outside one of my lecture halls at the university when this little girl walks up—probably a freshman, I guess—and she starts asking me questions about whether I'm waiting for a specific lecture or some other detail. The thing is, I could barely make out a single word she was saying! So, I just stood there nodding along like a fool, saying, "YES, YES, YEAH, SURE" 🤣🤣 to absolutely everything she threw at me. I was just going: "YES, YES..." 🤣

It’s honestly ridiculous. It would be just like if I decided to start speaking in a thick, rural Appalachian dialect to my Grandma, who speaks with a heavy Southern drawl, and just insisted on doing it that way... I'd love to see who would actually manage to understand me then, lol

It would be such a game-changer to be able to embed full YouTube videos directly into our posts rather than just posting links. 🙂 I realize that allowing video embeds might clutter up the feed and make scrolling a bit more hectic, but I truly believe you could manage that through moderation, warnings, and banning users who overdo it. In my opinion, removing this functionality altogether was a mistake; it really takes away from the richness of our discussions. 🙂

They will probably try to justify closing the "Orthodox faith" thread by pointing out that there's already a massive "Christianity 1000 questions 1000 answers" discussion up there, but in my view, that isn't a valid excuse. That original topic was fascinating and had its own specific focus, whereas other threads feel completely disconnected from reality. Take, for instance, a topic like: "The Catholic Church has opened its doors to Muslims for Friday prayers," which poses the following question in the intro:

"On the Teki thread, we haven't discussed converting churches into mosques or the trend of selling churches to meet the needs of mosques very much. What do you all think—will any church in America ever do something similar as a symbol of rapprochement and acceptance? Is that even possible here?"

It is one thing to pose a question like that regarding a country like France, Germany, or England, but to ask it about a nation like the United States, where the Muslim population is such a small fraction of the total? How is a question like that even remotely relevant?

If this had been framed as a discussion about France, Germany, or England, I might understand, but for the US... ☕
