The impact of local recognition in Hobbies & Leisure ·
It’s wild how seeing your own life reflected in public art can hit someone so hard. I remember my uncle seeing a tribute to his old shop in our town and it actually moved him to tears. Do you think these kinds of local landmarks actually matter to the community?
I was watching a documentary last night about rebuilding legendary sports dynasties, and it got me thinking about how much we, as fans, obsess over the "invisible hand" behind every decision. We love to invent these secret narratives where a single person’s quiet preference or a hidden motive supposedly dictates the entire direction of a franchise. It’s almost like we’re trying to solve a puzzle where half the pieces are just made up in our own heads.

I’ve noticed this pattern a lot lately, not just in sports, but in how we view leadership in general. We look at a massive organization—whether it’s a team, a corporation, or even a political movement—and we pick one "alpha" figure. We then spend hours on forums like this debating how much that one person’s personal philosophy or individual whims must be steering the ship. We create these complex psychological profiles for them, claiming that if they had just made *this* one different choice, or if they had felt a certain way about a specific player or project, the entire outcome would have been different.

It’s a fascinating way to pass the time, but I wonder if it actually keeps us from seeing the reality of how things work. Most of the time, big decisions are the result of a messy, grinding intersection of contracts, cap space, aging curves, and coaching philosophies. It’s rarely just one person’s "vision" or a singular moment of personal preference. We want there to be a mastermind behind the curtain because it makes the world feel more intentional. It’s much more exciting to believe a superstar is pulling the strings of destiny than to accept that a roster move was actually just a calculated necessity driven by a spreadsheet.

I remember back in my college days, I was part of a local intramural league. We had this one incredibly talented player who everyone thought was the "soul" of the team. Whenever we lost, the entire group would sit around and argue that if *he* had just played differently, or if we had recruited a certain type of defender to complement him, we would have been champions. We spent more time theorizing about his "influence" on our chemistry than we did actually practicing. We were essentially creating a myth around a single individual to explain our own shortcomings or the complexities of team dynamics.

There’s also a certain level of disrespect in these theories, don't you think? When we say, "This happened because Person X wanted it this way," we are essentially stripping away the agency of everyone else involved—the coaches, the scouts, the front office. We reduce a massive, multi-layered ecosystem down to the ego of one person. It’s a very human tendency to want to find a single point of failure or a single source of greatness. It simplifies the chaos.

But what if the "what if" scenarios we build are actually just distractions? If we spend all our time debating how a specific superstar’s mindset might have swayed a trade or a retention decision, we miss the actual structural reasons why those moves happened. We get lost in the psychology of the individual and ignore the cold, hard reality of the situation. We turn a tactical decision into a character study, and while character studies are great for novels, they’re often terrible for understanding why things actually go down in the real world.

I'm curious to see if others feel this way. When you're following a team or a major organization, do you find yourself falling into the trap of attributing every pivot to the "will" of the most famous person in the room? Or do you think there actually is a significant amount of influence that these high-level figures exert that the public just isn't seeing?

Does the "legend" of a single individual actually shape the direction of an entity, or is that just a narrative we construct to make sense of the noise?
Modesty - why partial? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Look, driftingtinker, those are just the facts. If Modesty were moderating the Economics subforum, everyone would have been banned ages ago. They’d probably have the whole section locked down by now. Even over in the cars section, people trade insults left and right and nobody ever gets banned. I was just pointing out how inconsistent the moderation is across different boards. My post that got me hit with a 100-point penalty was nothing more than a polite heads-up to a new user about being careful with what they post. There wasn't a single insult or anything remotely aggressive in there. Honestly, if I had actually been insulting someone, I probably would've caught a permanent ban. For crying out loud, stop trying to defend her. And you can see for yourselves that I didn't even get a warning for that post; if she were running that board, I would've racked up five warnings by now. I never thought I'd have to get dragged into a thread like this. LP aufiderzen

PS. I'm only chiming in here because we're talking about the exact same moderator, the same subforum, and the exact same penalty...

You aren't the only one who got hit with a penalty. I personally took a 100-point hit for a single post in that subforum, and several of my posts were wiped out too, which wasn't even her call but someone else's decision based entirely on the vibe of my writing style. She’s incredibly strict, so there's honestly no point in hanging out in any subforums she manages.

That's exactly why I got slapped with 100 points and a one-day ban that somehow stretched into four days.
Post.

Timothy Jones4 isn't allowed to speculate about what might happen here. Speculation is strictly forbidden and will get you a strike or a ban. What happens, happens. That is the only takeaway from this thread.

Here is the actual rulebook:
Additionally, posting scientifically unfounded information regarding earthquakes is prohibited, as is harassing other users with false and/or malicious misinformation.

This space is reserved for new reports on earthquakes and subsequent general discussions.
For any other topics, find the appropriate thread in the correct subforum.

This thread is barely active as it is. We only post things like: "It shook," or "I didn't feel that earthquake here in New York City."

I'm telling you this as a favor because in thirteen years on this site, those are the only strikes I've ever received.

And here are the other ones that got nuked:

"Modesty gets annoyed when someone deviates even one percent from the scientific consensus. Now she might end up punishing herself, so let's be fair since she's just trolling. She could have at least linked to your 'favorite' fringe subforum..."

"
If any other user wrote what fiket wrote, they would have been struck immediately. Their statements are all 'could be' or 'might be,' but nothing is certain. We expect certain outcomes, but expectations aren't facts. Those statements help absolutely no one, they just..."

"Expected. It was even clumsy of them to comment on that. Don't hand out a strike for that... try having a broader perspective; not everything exists on the edge of science, and science isn't an infallible god."

Keep in mind that when I called her out for trolling, she actually was trolling by linking to a crystal ball reading. She didn't punish herself; she punished everyone else. If she were a competent moderator, she would have linked to a thread on fringe science instead of fortune-telling. Plus, she’s one of the few people who doesn't even have the option to receive direct messages. That says enough. They'll probably start banning people from the disaster zones soon too; the topic is high-tension and they are way too quick to click the ban button. You see how often I mention strikes, and that's because every time I posted in there, I knew a strike from her was coming.
BSOD caused by RAM issues in Desktops ·
It’s pretty much impossible to find a single 2GB stick of Apple MacBook RAM like the one I've got, especially since all I see on eBay are these sets of two 1GB Apple MacBook sticks and nothing else.

There are just these two listings for those dual 1GB kits

and

technically that would hit 4GB, but since both slots are already taken, I have no clue if that would even function correctly...

I don't see any other way to handle this unless someone actually tracks down a single 2GB module identical to mine.
BSOD caused by RAM issues in Desktops ·
Here’s the deal with my situation.

I'm running 2x2GB of RAM, where the first stick is a Crucial 667 MHz and the second one is a Kingston 800 MHz. Ever since I slapped that second stick in, my whole system just freezes up and dies every couple of days, throwing a Blue Screen of Death and an error message at me. This only happens while I'm gaming, and before I added this extra RAM, the game ran perfectly fine for over a year. To be clear, the RAM itself is fine. I've already done the defrag and cleared the registry, plus I used CCleaner and disk cleanup, and there isn't a single virus on this machine.

I should mention that about two years ago, I also picked up some 800 MHz RAM because I couldn't find any more of that Crucial 667 MHz stuff, and I had the exact same issue, just more frequently. I ended up selling them because I figured they weren't compatible back then.

The motherboard I'm using is this: http://www.asus.com/products/pro...px?pid=2695#ov it supports DDR2 up to 1066 MHz, has 4 slots, and goes up to 16GB total, so you can't blame the board.

I have no clue what the BIOS settings for the RAM should actually look like. I just tried something a moment ago where I pulled the CMOS battery out of the motherboard, waited five minutes, put it back in, and fired up the PC. The date in Windows defaulted back to 1/1/2008. It doesn't show the startup messages anymore, but when it lists the CPU GHz and the RAM, it shows 667 MHz instead of 533 MHz, though it says 64-bit now instead of 128-bit if I remember correctly. Also, the processor is sitting at 2.2 GHz per core instead of the 2.7 it was at, and at 2.9 it would just crash. Basically, I just reset the BIOS.

The RAM is running in dual channel. Here are some fresh CPU-Z screenshots:

Did silverfox91 get banned?

Anyway, back to the topic, I can't stand slowpokes, I'm not some rebel or anything, but I just can't deal with people crawling along at 50 miles/h when the speed limit is 80, you know, driving 89 or 90 and refusing to move out of the fast lane.

Since you're expecting actual moderators—real people, not some damn search engine or automated system—to handle your requests, it would be pretty decent if you used a little manners like "Could you...", "Would you mind...", or even just a "Hey, can you...".

Sure thing, just get in touch with Nica.

Has anyone ever actually bought protein whey from this user on Craigslist

The price is lower than this 2.2 kg Gold standard stuff $33 you'd find even at the cheapest Walmart.
Dealing with hemorrhoids – any advice? in Health ·
Five days ago, right after a night out drinking, I woke up to find a massive hemorrhoid popped up out of nowhere on my left side. It’s thick, inflamed, and honestly a nightmare. In the past, I’ve had tiny pea-sized ones in the same spot that would just disappear within a day, but this is different. For the last five days, I've been treating it constantly by doing multiple chamomile rinses a day, using Faktu ointment mixed with calendula, and applying oil a few times daily. The first couple of days were absolute hell whenever I had to use the restroom because the pain was unbearable, but days three, four, and today have been fine in that regard. The issue is that the swelling hasn't gone down at all; it's still just as thick as when it started. Even though the pain has subsided and I've switched to a healthy diet, upped my water intake, and started taking magnesium supplements, the lump remains. Can anyone tell me how long I actually need to keep treating this before it vanishes, or if it's already too far gone and I just need to head straight to the doctor for cauterization or whatever surgery they do? This is seriously the worst possible timing for this to happen.
