gentleowl66 said:I'm having some issues with Microsoft's stuff on what are otherwise pretty solid Microsoft Windows builds... I've got the full version of Windows 7 Ultimate (pirated, but whatever)... when I first slapped it on my PC about a month ago, everything was fine, except MSN 9 would lag—it took over 10 seconds just to pop up the chat window. After a couple of weeks, it seemed to fix itself though. Yesterday, I did a fresh install because I messed things up while tweaking settings, and now MSN 9 is acting up again. Just so you know, on Windows 7 I have to run it in compatibility mode for Windows 2000 (since they insist I download a newer version, which I don't want, and I couldn't deal with that idiot anyway)... right now, it signs in okay without any errors, but the second I try to actually start chatting or reach out to someone, the whole thing just freezes. My only option is to pull up Task Manager and kill the process... anyone got a tip? This is driving me nuts... and I really don't want the new MSN 14 because it looks ugly as hell, I just don't want it.

Seems like looks matter more than functionality to you, I guess.🙂
I assume Microsoft has their reasons for pushing everyone away from the old Messenger toward the new versions.

Maybe you'll find something helpful here

Just grab this and install it.

I found some Outlook calendar... maybe you could take a look and see if you can figure out how the reminders work.

I don't get 😢

Found something that might actually help you out 🙂 A Google Calendar where you can set reminders.

What do you mean? It came out on October 22nd, which was almost a month ago. I guess you haven't really read the forum rules under section 2, so I wouldn't be surprised if they end up banning you for openly bragging about how you aren't crazy enough to pay for legal software. 🙂

I found some Windows Live calendar stuff... think you could take a look and maybe figure out how the reminder works?

I don't really get it. 😢

I guess that Windows gadget is just acting as your desktop calendar. 🙂
Windows Live calendar is an online thing, so I guess you have to be logged into Windows Live if you actually want the reminders to work.

Michael Vaughn2 said:Hey, does anyone actually know what that Gadget CALENDAR is for?

I mean, I don't really get it. It just sits on the screen showing the date, and that's it? I can just look at the taskbar for that. Who even needs this?

I thought maybe you could set reminders or birthdays... if that were the case, it would make sense, but right now it seems pretty useless.

So my question is, can you actually add reminders to this calendar, or is there some other GADGET out there that handles a reminder calendar?

Don't suggest third-party apps for reminders because I already have those. I'm specifically wondering if there's a gadget for Windows 7 that actually includes reminders.

thanks and peace

Unfortunately, it's not a reminder tool, just a calendar. It shows the current date, or if you click it, it shows the whole month.

I'd probably just stick with 32-bit. 👍

Not sure. Maybe try looking here instead. Just click the Office icon at the top and go into "Microsoft Word Options." It should look like this picture, then just hit "Proofing" on the left side.
My bad if the image is a bit huge 🙂

Good luck with Linux. Cheers 🙂

David Sanchez64 said:I just finished installing Windows 7 and everything is a mess... I keep getting these black squares over my desktop icons. I've rebooted a few times already, but nothing changes. Anyone have a clue what might be going on?

I guess it sounds like you might be missing a graphics driver.

Scott Ramirez2 said:oh, my bad, I meant when you get those red squiggly lines under words because they're misspelled.

Here’s how to fix that one too:

Double-click the part I circled here.
Set the language to English and pick "Automatic Speech Recognition" and "Default."
That should probably do it.

I wasn't trying to correct you, I just kind of got the feeling that Jonathan Morris40 didn't know where the Windows key was 🤷 though I might be wrong. 🙂

ALT + Tab gives you one view (those little windows lined up horizontally across the screen), whereas pressing the Windows key 🙂
plus Tab pulls up this other view where they're stacked on top of each other.

The program is solid, plus there's a free version available. I'm just not sure if you can do an overburn on a CD with this. Like, trying to squeeze 704 MB onto a 700 MB disc? I usually just use Neruda for that without any issues. 🤷

Austin Ward4 said:Windows 7 is such a pain... I ran into a million issues just trying to get Daemon Tools and other random stuff installed. And all those annoying pop-ups asking if you want to let the program modify your C drive or whatever... just stupid. Honestly, Vista with its service packs was way better.

I guess you might have given up on Windows 7 a bit too soon. Maybe give it one more shot. 🤣

rustydriver23 said:I don't have it on my laptop, but I was thinking about installing it since I've got 4 GB of RAM...

I've also got 4 GB of RAM, and I actually went with the 64-bit version before ditching it after a week to go back to 32-bit. Driver and software compatibility issues were just easier to deal with on 32-bit, and honestly, the speed felt pretty much the same.
My laptop never really uses more than 2 GB of RAM anyway, I guess. 🙂

Noah Thompson said:I guess 🙂 ... I'm getting my connection via Wi-Fi along with a few others on one router, so it's set up to handle the load without any issues..............
I managed to get Windows 7 installed, though I had to manually grab the sound card driver afterward. Now I'm downloading the graphics driver even though Windows already installed one, but I can't find the option for TV-out anywhere... so I guess I have to deal with that.
One thing I'm struggling with, though—how do you put icons on the bar? I can't seem to get them down there...

Also, are you guys using the included Internet Explorer or just Firefox?

thanks

Icons on the bar?? You probably mean the QuickLaunch toolbar. It's tucked away in Windows 7.
If you want to add a specific program to the bar, just open it and then right-click the icon on the taskbar and select "pin this program to Taskbar"

Personally, I stick to Internet Explorer (and Google Chrome), but if you prefer Firofox, feel free to grab it (the latest version is 3.5.5.).

Is that enough?

thanks

It’s not exactly fast, but hey, it's ADSL. It'll get the job done. I guess if you aren't super impatient or in a massive rush, you should be fine. 🙂

Noah Thompson said:does the driver installation happen during the Windows installation itself, or does it wait until after?
if it happens after, does that mean it's just pulling drivers from the web?
and if I don't have fast internet, that could be a real pain, right? 😁

hvača

If you're working with slow internet, that might actually be an issue. It's not just the drivers; Windows 7 also pulls down OS updates, which could end up taking forever ☕
