Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
@quietcanyon2/">@@quietcanyon2 - just to be specific - it only pulled down about 65 MB for the Service Packs for me.
Anyway, just run the update, and it'll tell you how much data it thinks it needs to download. If that seems like too much, you can always just hit "
Cancel"
😬 And there's no need to get all worked up. If you aren't a fan of the colorful crap, just use something else; I guess you have plenty of options.

..so, should I just skip it, trash this junk entirely, or just switch to Linux Mint?😕

I think Windows 7 is a great OS. If you really think it's garbage, you might as well just jump over to Linux. 👍
And if you think there aren't any updates or patches over there, you're mistaken. 🙂

I usually just go with option 6. Other formats and pick .rtf (rich text format). That way, you can pretty much open the file in any word processor later on. 🙂

I'm not entirely sure if I'm reading your screenshot right, but I guess I end up with this even without any extra software 🤷

@ Matthew Ramos61 - my taskbar isn't grouping windows either, but I think it's an easy fix

I don't really need that Up button anyway. When I'm in a folder and want to head back, I just click the specific folder name in the address bar right next to the Back and Forward buttons. It's way faster to just jump straight to whatever parent directory I want :-)

@ Michael Mitchell69

Maybe try running a System Restore to an earlier date? Usually, that kind of thing fixes my issues when they pop up.

Andrew Rogers6 said:It’s just weird because whenever I launch Winamp, everything goes sideways... everything else works fine. Any other app is totally normal, but once Winamp opens, the font gets messed up. I don't even really use it, but knowing I didn't set things up right is starting to get under my skin. Here's what it looks like in these screenshots:

This is how it looks when Winamp starts up... I guess you can't see a huge difference right here, but looking at the whole page, the font change is pretty obvious..

Does anyone happen to know which font is being used in that second picture? If I knew the name, I could just rename it to Caliber and maybe fix the issue... but since I have no clue what the font is, I'm stuck.

Maybe it's Segoe UI 🤷

Do you have this option?

If you just hit the shortcut there, it should show you all the available system restore points.

This explains why the pagefile.sys moved from the C: drive over to the D: drive. There’s a fix at the bottom of the thread, though it mentions you should probably be careful with what you try 🙂

Same here. It’s just how the page is laid out; it doesn't stretch edge-to-edge (like The New York Times or Yahoo...). If you're actually looking to make the font bigger and easier to read, you probably need to adjust the system scaling. I guess you could head over to the Control Panel, go to Display, and maybe try setting it to 125% or 150%. 🤷

Samuel Smith4 said:Hey there!
So, my girlfriend picked up a new laptop that came with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. There wasn't a physical disc included, just the product key stuck on the machine itself. She hadn't even gotten around to doing the phone activation yet when the thing crapped out on her. They took it in for repairs, swapped out the motherboard, blah blah blah...
After she brought the laptop home from the repair shop and turned it on, the thing was in even worse shape than before. Device Manager was just full of yellow exclamation marks, and it kept flagging the OS as a pirated version. I guess those guys at the shop installed some cracked version of Windows after swapping out the motherboard or something. She ended up calling Microsoft support, and they got it activated and updated, which cleared most of the errors in Device Manager—except for Bluetooth, which is still acting up. Plus, the computer keeps crashing constantly, which shouldn't be happening given her specs. We called the shop where she bought it, but they basically brushed us off saying that since it's an Asus, they can't help because they only handle support for Acer, Lenovo, and HP. They suggested it was either a botched repair or just a software glitch. So, I tried downloading the Bluetooth driver directly from the Asus website since the standard Windows search couldn't find anything, but now it’s actually worse, it's crashing more often, and those error icons are still there. None of this was happening before we took it in. At this point, I just want to do a clean install of Windows. If it still acts up after that, we'll definitely take it back to the shop. The issue is I don't have a Windows disc to reinstall from, and I really don't want to deal with pirated software since she already paid for a legitimate license. Is there any way to reinstall without a disc? I haven't really messed with the Windows 7 Recovery option before, and I'm not sure if that would even fix the underlying mess.
Sorry for the long post, and thanks for all the help.

The installation should be sitting on a hidden partition. You can usually get to it by tapping a specific key right when you boot up the laptop—it typically pops up a message on the screen telling you which one to hit to trigger the Recovery. Once that kicks in, it restores the whole system along with all the drivers, so everything should hopefully run smoothly after that. 🙂

Alex Barnes4 said:I guess I rarely find anything there. Like, if I search for a song title, nothing pops up. Most of my stuff is actually on my D drive, so maybe that's the issue.

Just go to My Computer -> click on the D drive -> then type whatever you're looking for in the search box at the top right.🙂

restlesslynx8 said:Anyone know how to fix this...

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on this setup: 2.4GHz Intel, 512MB RAM, 120GB HDD... basically, after I format everything and set up the partitions, it gets to the part where it copies the Windows files, and then right around 5% or 7%—it varies—I hit this error:

Windows cannot access The installation sources. Verify that The installation sources ara accessible, and restart the installation.

Is there some kind of BIOS setting I should change or something?

Maybe it's just not enough RAM??

I've got a 500GB HDD I want to split into three parts (60, 280, and 160), but it’s just not working out. 😳
A tech guy suggested I just shrink it by about 200GB, so I did that 🤷 and now I'm stuck with two partitions (300 and 200GB), where the system one is actually the bigger one... and when I try to shrink that down further to 60 and 240 GB, it's basically impossible. 😳 It only lets me shave off another 15GB. 😕😕
How am I supposed to get another partition set up? I'm honestly pretty lost here. 🤷

Maybe try using this free tool?

Maybe try killing sidebar.exe in Task Manager first. Then you could probably just relaunch Desktop Gadgets from the Control Panel.

As for antivirus, I just stick with Microsoft Security Essentials and honestly, I'm pretty happy with it. It's free, stays out of the way, and does a decent job catching all the junk, especially the stuff coming off USB sticks 🙂

Sometimes formerly IE won't let me download things because of language compatibility issues, but Chrome handles it just fine 🙂

dustybear9 said:Quick question, can you actually order a recovery disc online if the Windows version is genuine? Like, using the product key? Thanks!!

Whose laptop is it? Maybe try reaching out to their support. I guess it should be possible, though they might charge you for it.😢

what kind of info do I need to provide or ask about this
is this okay
http://www.amazon.com/cooling-pad-laptop

I'd fix that one and maybe bend this one too.

You’ve gotta check what kind of power connector it uses—like, where you're plugging it into the motherboard or one of those spare power leads from the adapter.
Also, you should probably see if there's actually a spot on the case to screw it in. 🙂

cosmicrider5 said:I'm not sure which fan you actually pulled off, but if it was the CPU or the chipset, hitting 75% is honestly a miracle. I'd grab a new fan and definitely not run it without one. Cooling matters.

The chipset fan died on him. Not exactly the smartest move taking it off, since it at least acted as a passive heatsink before—now nothing's being cooled, so maybe the motherboard will fry too.🙂
