Put a rag under your PC, just in case it starts bleeding all over your carpet 😁

512MB is the bare minimum if you want Windows XP to actually work. Give it some food before you start talking about a week 😉

I don't know how much RAM you're running, but if it's under 2 GB, installing Windows 7 is probably a waste of time. That "slowness" could be coming from a dozen different places; it mostly depends on your hardware setup. It might be indexing files, maybe Superfetch is acting up, or who knows. At worst, maybe it isn't the RTM version and some random bug slipped through.

And this idea that Microsoft is just churning out a new OS just to keep things moving? I don't buy it. New hardware hits the market, and the OS has to catch up.
Are you sure it's the GPU?

Regarding Windows 8, they describe it as a user concept. I guess someone just sat at home and imagined how Windows 8 should actually look

Maybe you'll learn Russian too if you're lucky. xD

Man, that reminds me of this one time. Some lady called me to fix the network at her shop—not just any shop, though, a Chinese grocery store. I show up, sit down at the laptop, and it’s running Windows XP, but the whole OS is in Chinese. 😂 Just lines and dashes all over the screen. 🤣 All she could say was, "It won't load, it just won't load, my god, it won't load." 🤣

But I figured it out. Real geek stuff. 🙂 😬

Once the final version of Service Pack 1 drops, I guess we'll be able to upgrade to the retail version for free?
thanks

I just don't get this comparison where they claim Windows Vista runs like a dream and wouldn't even come close to Windows 7 😁 If he’d just said he sticks to Windows XP and can't imagine using Windows 7, I guess that would make sense, but this... 😁

I downloaded it straight from Microsoft's site, still nothing.

It just freezes during the installation, either it crashes or throws some error about missing files.

The specs are
ABIT IP35 Pro
Q6600
Nvidia gtx275 4
4 gigs of RAM
Samsung monitor
Two hard drives, one Seagate, one Hitachi. I tried switching them, installing on one then the other, trying them one at a time...😁
I even swapped the GPU, pulled the RAM out, tried a power supply from another PC thinking maybe that was it. I've swapped everything except the motherboard and the CPU.

The processor is overclocked, though I set it back to default settings thinking that might be the issue, but it didn't help.

Nothing else in my hardware seems weird enough to stall an install. I searched online and found nothing. I even ran that Microsoft tool to see if the rig could handle Windows 7; it said everything looks fine. It mentioned potential issues with Daemon Tools or Norton, but I doubt that's it.

Hardware-wise, it says it should work.

Windows XP and Vista install perfectly fine.

I have no idea why this junk won't work.

Maybe try burning the image at a lower speed.🙂
Maybe it'll be MS 🙂

I guess American private users (and certain companies, too) have a pretty sharp sense of what things actually cost at retail 😁

I've already answered this a bunch of times on this thread. I guess I'll go dig through a few pages back to find it. 😉

But mostly I just stick to Microsoft Word, maybe with a few other basic apps running in the background. I rarely touch anything heavy. Maybe I should just install the x86 version instead? And if I do, I could grab an extra 1 GB of RAM, though I'm not sure it's worth it—partly because of the price, and partly because I doubt it'll even enable dual channel mode.

I don't think there's a 64-bit version of Adobe, so it probably doesn't matter.

If you're worried about dual channel... even if you pick up 2GB, there's a slim chance it'll work since the chips have to be identical. I doubt Best Buy would even have the exact same series in stock.

Still, go ahead and get that 2GB. If the system recognizes 3.5GB total (with that 256MB card), you're basically set. 👍 You might lose 500MB in the process, but who cares? Eventually, things will catch up...

Sticking with x86 for now. We'll see what happens.👍

Taylor Campbell4 said:Can you clarify this? (I've only got 2 GB of RAM right now, but I was thinking about picking up another 2
soon.) How does this whole 64-bit thing actually work? I have a 64-bit processor, so I assume the motherboard handles 64-bit fine (not really an expert here), but if I install x86, does everything just run at 32-bit?
(Does it affect speed? What exactly does it change? Does it only matter when running a 64-bit app? I haven't stumbled upon any 😁 yet.)

And why isn't less than 4GB enough?

Reasons?

I think nobie explained it well enough. Don't sweat the motherboard and processor situation; if the CPU is 64-bit, you're fine. If you install an x86 OS, then yeah, everything runs in 32-bit mode. A 64-bit OS would be faster for certain heavy-duty apps, maybe things like CAD/CAM software or similar stuff.

But if you want the quick breakdown, it goes like this:

32-bit processors: theoretically can address up to 2^32 memory units (4,294,967,296 = 4 GB)

64-bit processors: theoretically can address up to 2^64 memory units (18,446,744,073,709,551,616 = 17,179,869,184 GB = a massive amount of gigabytes)

There are ways to squeeze up to 64GB of RAM onto a 32-bit processor, but... well, there's a catch.

As for why I wouldn't recommend it, it's because in a 64-bit OS, all those 32-bit apps run through an emulator, and some of them just don't play nice. Driver support can be hit or miss, too. It probably just depends on what you're doing.

EDIT: You caught me, that 750MB would go to waste. 😉

What's the issue? I gave the guy an answer to his question. Whether we call ourselves experts or not, you still have to deal with a massive amount of nonsense.

Grace Morris6 said:Everyone here thinks they’re some kind of expert, acting like they have all the answers when someone actually runs into trouble. If I could fix this myself, I wouldn't be bothering you people. I guess this forum isn't really meant for solving anything anyway. But hey, thanks for nothing.

I already answered you. You want me to click through everything for you too, I guess?

Taylor Campbell4 said:Can you upgrade between builds? Like, say I install 7100, then decide I want to move up to RC, then from RC to RC 2, and so on? Or am I stuck doing a clean installation every single time?

Got my new PC today. I need to find some time to actually put it together, then I'm thinking about installing Windows 7. I've been planning this since I read that article on YouTube about two months ago. They said it was solid—that the beta version was basically as stable as the final release. Apparently, everything works fine, aside from maybe two or three major bugs involving media files and some software, Winamp I think? Doesn't really matter much to me. It should work.

I use this computer for work, and frankly, I don't have the patience to perform a clean install every few months. Usually, a single Windows installation lasts me several years without any issues. That’s why I’m specifically looking for an answer to the question above. If I install an RC version now, will I be able to just upgrade to the final release once it actually drops?

Thanks for the reply.

PS: I know, maybe someone will want to suggest that I shouldn't be installing an OS beta if I'm using my computer for work, but my current guess is that I'll go ahead and install it anyway. I think it'll be stable enough.
P.S. Which version should I bother downloading now that I've got a 64-bit processor? If anyone has a link, maybe toss it my way.

The RC version is only good until July 1, 2010. Starting March 1, 2010, your PC will probably just shut itself down every two hours. Upgrading between builds should be fine, I guess, but I'm not so sure about jumping straight to the final release. If you've got more than 4GB of RAM, maybe go with x64; otherwise, x86 is probably your best bet.

Yeah, you nailed it. 😁 I'd suggest you don't make that your primary OS. 😁

Grace Morris6 said:Look, I'm no expert, which is exactly why I'm asking for help from someone who actually knows what they're doing. But apparently, you don't have the answer either. I've got 3 GB of RAM, which I figure is plenty. Download speeds seem fine, but my programs take forever to open. I checked for viruses, so there's nothing there.

Maybe the answer you need was in the previous post:

Nicholas Collins68 said:By the way, I read somewhere that RC has issues with hard drives and drivers... is that actually true?🤔

Who knows. Maybe that's it. We might just have to wait for the final version. Depends on the drive, though; maybe it just defaulted to PIO mode.

No, x86 runs on both types of processors (32-bit and 64-bit), whereas x64 only works on 64-bit ones
