Alex Rogers96 said:And who’s actually left alive to tell the story exactly how it went down? The only truth is that they were forgotten. Everything else is just fiction.

Exactly.

But—
some elements from the movie actually line up with what really happened.
I looked into the actual incident, and this one guy on his site laid out a possible scenario—since he’s been out on the open ocean himself—

They found a woman's outfit all torn up—so maybe it was sharks or a coral reef...
On top of that, the husband's suit was completely intact.

There actually was a buoy near them—but the current was too strong for them to reach it.
They were basically abandoned because of poor coordination.
The people in real life were genuinely miserable and frustrated with their existence—just like the characters in the film. That’s what actually gives the movie its psychological depth.

Man, those smokers, right?👋

Clearly, I wasn't the only one who caught that.
😁

And the positions they were using... totally unexpected.

I tracked it down
😳

If you're actually looking for more details—though good luck, since info is pretty thin even considering how much it shook things up back in the States—just punch "Eileen Lonergan" into the search bar.

Jose Chase2 said:That’s the whole point. They could have taken two people possessed by giraffes and slapped a "based on a true story" label on it because it’s only based on reality. That doesn't mean the entire movie actually played out the way it really happened.

Yeah, obviously.
I get how that "based on" logic works.
I figured that out watching "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," where the movie isn't even about some maniac slaughtering teenagers, but about a psychopath who killed two women—and it didn't even happen in Texas.

But regarding this specific film, everything I've gathered up to this point suggests these events are almost entirely factual.
It really was about a couple left adrift at sea, and a camera was actually recovered from inside a shark's stomach!
There was supposedly a message on it, or they realized the couple had been alive for 24 hours!
And they only started searching for them after that 24-hour mark passed!
I don't know, the whole situation surrounding this movie is deeply unsettling to me.
😳
How can such fatal negligence—leaving people out in the open ocean—even happen?! Not just in some disorganized corner of the world, but in developed nations like Australia!
😲

---
I traveled to Australia a few years ago right after this incident occurred. The couple had been in the water for just over 24 hours before anyone realized they were missing. As a SCUBA diver myself, I know it takes anywhere from two to three hours just to reach the reef for a tour by boat. Once you're out there, the current is brutal; there is absolutely no way to swim back to shore if you get stranded. Eventually, their gear was located, but they were never found. Their bodies were never recovered, though the woman's wetsuit washed up on a beach, shredded and covered in bite marks. They also found a camera inside the belly of a shark, along with a plea for help indicating they had been in the water for more than 24 hours. There are two main theories regarding their deaths. The first is that they were eaten by sharks, mirroring the film. The second is that they stripped off their gear and committed suicide, leaving them to be scavenged by sharks. The movie attempted to depict a possible scenario. It is a confirmed fact that they were eaten by sharks, but we still don't know if that was the direct cause of death.

Insane movie
😂

It’s basically South Park voices and concepts shoved into some innocent-looking puppet show format
😳

The swearing caught me off guard, and those explicit sex scenes—with puppets, for crying out loud!!

I've managed to dig up the first lead
😳

Apparently, this whole thing is based on a true story involving an American couple on their honeymoon out in Australia about four or five years back...

Jaws actually hit home for me. I’ve had an experience with something similar before, so I could really feel the weight of it. That sense of dread was all too real.
That’s why this movie was absolutely chilling—it was brutal to sit through. Pure horror in every sense of the word.
Definitely worth a watch.

It felt like they were going to be caught before the end.

Couples vanish all the time...

Give me a break.
😲

The movie definitely grabbed my attention...
Now I’m rethinking my whole trip to dive in the Florida Keys.
😁 😁

But seriously, I need to know about the actual events. Is this really a thing that happens that often?
And if this is based on truth, did both couples actually disappear or get eaten in real life?!

I’m genuinely curious... going to go dig up some info online.

Sophia Evans76 said:Honestly, this movie has one of the best endings I've ever seen... It's not even about being dramatic. It’s just completely unexpected, yet so raw and real. When you actually sit back and think about it, it’s the only way things could have played out given the circumstances...

The film was fine by me.
An incredibly unsettling piece of work.
😳

Critics on IMDb absolutely loved it.

🤔
Is there any chance a sequel is already in the works?!

Because Halle Berry mentioned she’s done with movies like this and has zero interest in stepping back onto a set again...

Looks like we're stuck with more of the same garbage next year too.
🤣

But Halle Berry isn't coming back.

Really?

Ethan Perez97 said:So you call that having sex? Look, I'm not homophobic, I just like messing with people.😁 😁

No hard feelings 😘

but seriously...
Did you see Catwoman? Was it actually any good?
Or how about Halle Berry’s speech when she won Worst Actress at the awards?
😉
Catwoman in Movies ·
I was watching her reaction on the news just a few hours ago—her whole acceptance speech...
😲

She was incredible!
Even the President, the guy who actually founded the award, was totally blown away by what she had to say.
She was so raw, so wise, and she took that trophy with such genuine courage..
👍 👍

As for the movie itself—
I remember catching it shortly after I'd been with someone; I was flying solo and just exhausted—I could barely keep my eyes open. Because I was so out of it, I walked away thinking the movie felt messy or disjointed because of how I was feeling... but looking back, turns out the film was just plain bad.

If I just switched to an unlimited data plan, I could have downloaded it instantly. It’s been a whole year already...

It was on some Swiss TV channel over New Year's... I recorded it...
And I'm only just now getting around to watching it.
😳

I saw that ages ago, also via satellite... I can't even remember when those idiots on local cable aired that movie (if they ever did at all 😳).

"SCIENCEEEEE FICTIOOOOOOON"

<uuu- UUUU - uuuu>

"DOUBLE FEATUREEEEE!"

Oh, god dammit!
I just managed to get that out of my head and now it's all coming back to me. Great. Just great.
😬

😁 😁

Now I have this massive, uncontrollable urge to go watch it again.
slyowl9 said:Hey there. 👋 Look, if you actually want to dive into this, I’ll lend you some books. I’ve got two historical ones. One follows the actual timeline of her life, and the other follows the chronology of the historical records—basically, how the accounts were written from that first mention of her onwards. Take it or leave it.
Look, I’ve always had a soft spot for France, regardless of how much of a pain in the ass the French can be. 🙂
There’s no denying it—the woman is absolutely fascinating. No question about it.

Hey... 🙂
Thanks, but I think I’ll just do some digging online myself.

Look, Tito was my hero when I was just a kid.
😳

But now? I can't stand Tuđman. These people have started building this cult of personality around him, trying to turn him into some new version of Tito. It’s pathetic. They aren't backed by God; they're just frauds. 😬 😳

Finally sat down and watched it this past Sunday..

And damn..
That music from the film just sticks in your head. I’ve been humming it since I woke up this morning.
