wiredrider9 said:Look, it doesn't even have to be a ban—let's just hold a referendum for retail workers and see what actually happens.

All those employees could show up to a referendum every single day if they wanted to, they'd just walk straight up to their manager and hand in their resignation.

Let's all just head out to a referendum ourselves and demand they scrap the sales tax entirely, because you know how much everyone would save, I'm telling you, turnout would be a solid 100%.

wiredrider9 said:But what about the rest of us? Is money really more important than everything else in this damn life? It's not like they're banning everyone from working—just those damn retail shops. Who do you think you are, some kind of royal queen?

And honestly, hearing someone call me a drama queen is hilarious coming from someone who basically wants the government to ban Sunday shifts just so they can spend all day cuddling with their girlfriend 😂

wiredrider9 said:So, are you working retail?

I don't see what any of that has to do with anything, honestly, because half the shops over in the States are closed up tight on Sundays anyway, so are we trying to be like them or just some weird halfway version of them

wiredrider9 said:Maybe it's because people have partners who don't work Sundays at all—so while they're off, they end up spending that time alone instead of with their significant other. Or maybe their partner works the opposite shift, so they barely see each other anyway. Even if they both have Sundays off, sometimes you can't even get one full day together with the whole family, etc., etc.

And honestly, that’s why I think the government should just ban working on Sundays altogether. Just saying.

bluebison47 said:Well, let’s just take a second to actually think about this... you aren't some lone worker in the entire country, and people like you definitely don't make up the majority of the workforce.

A huge chunk of those workers have kids who aren't even free during the week—they're only off on the weekends because that's how the school systems operate (and let's be honest, most of them aren't strictly religious folks worrying about keeping Sunday "holy").

Retail stores aren't emergency services or essential industries that depend on Sunday shifts—you know, unlike restaurants, bars, or maybe sports journalists—so their schedule shouldn't be dictated by the day of the week. Whatever you feel like you "need" to buy on a Sunday, you could easily grab on a Saturday or a Monday; in 98% of cases, you won't face any actual catastrophe.

But what happens to the big shopping malls?

wiredrider9 said:But seriously, what kind of "freedom of choice" are we actually talking about here?

Look, Matthew Young35, GQ, and I all want to get some work done on Sundays, and it feels like you guys are just trying to strip away that freedom from us.

Personal freedom will always trump government mandates when it comes to your own life, because if you’re actually struggling, then sure, go ahead and call up Washington to get them to step in 🤣

I mean, having the actual choice to decide whether or not you want to work on a Sunday is infinitely better than just having the state step in and ban Sunday shifts altogether.

Anthony Wright30 said:It seems the most formidable individuals are those who pose as titans of industry, yet find themselves utterly scandalized by the mere suggestion of a free Sunday. I suppose one must give credit where it is due; if it weren't for your tireless contributions as the backbone of the workforce, the global economy might be at least fifty percent weaker as it is.

Look, there's a huge difference between actual capitalism and the government constantly sticking its nose into every single corner of society, but I guess some people just can't wrap their heads around that distinction, right?

Matthew Young35 said:No.
Labor rights mean the right to be paid fairly for your work, not the right to avoid working altogether.

What people should actually be fighting for is a decent paycheck, standard working hours, and having your Saturdays and Sundays completely free to actually live your life.

Matthew Young35 said:Where on earth are you seeing these socialists?

A true socialist would advocate for more—specifically, more fairly compensated—work, not for banning work altogether.
I certainly don't see anyone like that here in America.

Labor rights are basically the bedrock of any actual socialist movement, so how does that even make sense right now?
The whole idea of workers having a guaranteed day off every week is pretty much set in stone.

wiredrider9 said:Honestly, someone needs to step up and make four o'clock the new standard end time for work—just let us clock out after lunch so we can hit the park for a bit and then catch an evening mass. 🙂

man, if things get messy, that law isn't gonna save you, we might need to bring a little bit of chaos into the mix instead

Matthew Young35 said:Well, it’s certainly worth making them regret it.

Cowardly politicians are just using this global crisis as a smokescreen to push their own agendas through.

They’d be the first ones out there protesting if Sunday work bans were actually enforced; they'd probably find a way to squeeze in all that extra labor on a Saturday instead.

But wait a second, even the socialists are pushing this exact same thing, like the socialists and the clergy have basically teamed up and slid right into this whole debate. 😂

wiredrider9 said:It pays off because labor is dirt cheap and they barely pay any overtime for Sundays.

I mean, okay, let's say we actually ban Sunday work, what happens then, does every greedy boss out there suddenly decide to start handing out pink slips, or are they all just going to undergo this massive moral transformation and become better people overnight? 😕
Offside Chat Archives (2014-2021) in Soccer ·
Matthew Young35 said:So, if that's the case, why on earth would they work on a Sunday?
Working on a Sunday isn't mandatory.
Why bother doing it if there’s no profit in it?

Just pure spite, honestly.

Laura Chavez93 said:What do you mean, "reduced revenue"? 🤷 If I don't buy something today, I'll just pick it up another day...
I fail to see the logic in claiming revenues will drop just because business isn't conducted on one specific day. 😵

😂

Yeah, sure, you're totally right, go ahead and just completely disregard all the effort I put in, and yeah, call me an idiot too. 🤣

wiredrider9 said:Man, she really covered every single angle there, Carlos.

See, what you're putting out there is just opinion and hearsay, but what I’m laying down here is straight-up math.

The fallout from banning Sunday work is going to be a measurable loss of jobs in whatever sectors get hit by that ban.

There isn't really much deep philosophy to unpack here.

In markets where labor is already tight, you won't feel much of a bump, but in places where there's a surplus of workers, this is just going to flood the market with more supply, which means employers are going to have even more leverage to dictate wages. And that translates to one thing: lower paychecks.

People love to complain about the government overstepping where it doesn't belong, constantly whining that things aren't working right, yet they're the first ones asking for more government intervention in everything.

wiredrider9 said:In most stores, they’re already shorthanded—I mean, you walk into some places that are like 5,000 square feet and there are literally only three people working the whole floor.

And then what about the places where they actually have plenty of people? What are we supposed to do with them then?
Offside Chat Archives (2014-2021) in Soccer ·
Laura Chavez93 said:Could someone perhaps provide some clarification regarding this profound assertion?

There’s nothing deep about it, honestly, it’s just basic math at the end of the day.

If all those hours people aren't working on Sundays don't get paid, you really just have to crunch the numbers.

Just to make it super easy to wrap your head around, let's say you have a local grocery store with six employees. If you pass a law banning Sunday shifts, you've basically wiped out six shifts from the schedule, which means one whole worker becomes redundant because their weekly hours just vanished.

It's a simplified way to look at it, but it gets the point across perfectly.

Did you seriously think you could just pass a law to screw over small business owners and expect them to maintain the exact same payroll costs while their revenue takes a hit?
Offside Chat Archives (2014-2021) in Soccer ·
The direct fallout from banning Sunday shifts is going to be thousands of people losing their jobs.

It’s honestly on the same level as messing with the federal minimum wage.

Most people just don't seem to wrap their heads around how much this actually impacts real lives.
