I’m really not going to bother quoting that mountain of nonsense you just pulled out of thin air.

Here, have a look and enjoy...

38. TEDMED: We often hear COVID-19 compared to the seasonal flu. What’s the right way to frame this comparison?

Take the seasonal flu, for instance. It usually hits about 30 million people in the U.S. every year, and while less than 1/10th of 1% of those folks pass away, that's still a massive amount of people. Globally, the seasonal flu claims about 300,000 lives in a typical year. However, on average, this new coronavirus is 10 to 20 times more lethal, and unlike the flu, we don't have the luxury of protecting
ourselves through vaccination.

Anthony Jackson2 said:Maybe do some actual research before coming back with those "arguments."

If people were infectious for three weeks straight, we wouldn't even know what to call this disease.

"By comparison, only a third of patients with SARS still harbored the virus in their respiratory tract after as long as four weeks, the Chinese scientists said. They studied the medical records and laboratory data from 191 Covid-19 patients treated at Jinyintan Hospital and Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital, including 54 who died from the infection."

Anyway, goodnight.
The average incubation period for the Corona virus is currently about 5 days. If you happen to have some info on mild cases lasting 6 weeks, I'd be more than happy to read it...

Seriously, Eric Fox7, when you're just pulling my leg like this, aren't you embarrassed to post stuff like this and then try to act all high and mighty?
Idiots claiming they shut down schools🤦 In Italy, the media just brainwashed everyone into thinking it was the apocalypse🤦 They even postponed the NBA because of a virus that isn't any more dangerous than the flu🤦

Go ahead, keep typing, quoting others constantly just to call them out, while your actual grasp on the current topic is about as deep as those company drivers who used to dodge anyone asking if they'd been in contact with Italy... absolute stupidity

Shutting down my router now, I've read it all

Why don't you tell us if you're still giving advice to truck drivers traveling through Italy to pretend they were never actually there? Is that what we're bragging about now?

And please, give us another one of those little theories of yours about how this is all just a mild flu and everyone is just conspiring together...

Eric Fox7 and any kind of actual discussion... 🤣 🤣

Anthony Jackson2 said:Actually, 14 days is just the incubation period—it's not how long the virus sits in your body. For milder cases, treatment lasts about three weeks, and even then, you'll still have the virus in your nose. We're talking closer to six weeks of presence for patients with light symptoms.

And then you try to talk about arguments when you don't even know the basic facts.🤦

Six weeks? Are you kidding me... 🤦

So you incubate the virus for 14 days, spend another 21 days getting treated, and then just carry it around like an asymptomatic carrier for another few weeks...?
I honestly can't tell if you're pulling my leg or if you're actually being serious...
Just for some perspective: Arteta tested positive on the 14th, and after nine days, he’s already back to 100%. If you factor in that he probably caught the bug a few days before the actual test, plus whatever extra time he might spend isolating just to be safe... you could argue it’s closer to three weeks total, but trying to claim it takes six weeks is just a reach... 🤦 And that photo is way too blurry... 🤣

I gotta give it to you, 🙏 Kenek is an old joke, but the kid is killing it. It's actually a blast reading this. Cirque du Soleil better watch their back because there's serious competition coming 🤣

I’m not here to lecture anyone or play teacher; I just genuinely enjoy a solid debate. I want an actual argument where we can challenge each other—where you might actually convince me I'm wrong, or at least leave me questioning my own stance... But engaging with people who think they're the only geniuses in a world full of idiots? That's just a waste of breath.

The biggest issue here is that people just don't get the point of quarantine. The whole idea is to stay isolated for fourteen days because that’s how long the virus lingers in your system. Think about it—if you take 100 infected people and put them in quarantine for two weeks, theoretically they should all be recovered by the end, and you wouldn't see any new cases popping up. Plus, if new ones do show up, you actually have a functioning system in place to handle them. But we aren't talking about isolating a hundred people; we're trying to halt an entire country to stop the spread, so you don't accidentally pass it to your family only for them to suffer through it at home. The real headache is that some individuals are just plain idiots and refuse to follow the rules, but you also can't exactly shut down the entire United States for two weeks since certain industries have to stay operational... and then there's the medical staff, who are constantly exposed to crowds, making them the easiest way for the virus to jump from person to person...

All of this should ultimately slow down the expansion, giving us a good two to four weeks to let things settle back into a functional groove...

They’re also scrambling to repurpose existing medications, since some drugs are already being tested against the Coronavirus—not exactly seeing massive breakthroughs yet, but more and more treatments already on the market are being tweaked to see if they can fight Corona...
Vaccines are essentially the "new kid on the block," which means they won't be widely available for another year or two... But an actual cure? That could be hitting the scene much sooner, maybe in just a few months. It probably won't be some magic bullet that works 100% of the time, but then again, what ever is?

I’ll say it again: none of us are smarter than the entire scientific community combined. We’re talking about the people who actually discover cures for diseases, engineer spacecraft, and map out gene cloning... so if Ashley Bailey6 or urbanhawk17 really think they have a better handle on things than the global powers running the show, then honestly, they're beyond help. It isn't exactly rocket science to just stay home for fifteen or thirty days. You aren't even under house arrest—you can go for a stroll, sit on a bench in the park, whatever; you just shouldn't be having physical contact or hanging out close to people for that window. You have one simple job: stay home. But apparently, that's too much to ask because everyone is acting like it's some unbearable tragedy that they "can't go out" or "can't socialize"... please. If you catch the flu and need two weeks to recover, what do you do? Wander around the neighborhood sipping coffee? No, you stay home, get over it, and stop whining all over Reddit and Facebook...

Joseph Clark37 said:The biggest rule-breakers when it comes to staying home to stop the spread are those people walking their dogs. They're all over the streets. It’s not like we didn't see this coming ☕
...

There’s one guy near my place who went on a marathon today, walking his dog thirty times. I’ve honestly never seen him out with the dog before; it’s always the kids doing the walking. They usually stop to chat for a bit, let the dogs play, then head back. But hey, typical American behavior...

A friend of mine over in Dojc tells me the situation there is eerie—nobody is out on the streets at all, he said it looks like Twilight. You just see police patrols driving by, and if they spot anyone, they immediately go check their IDs. The only people you see are folks carrying grocery bags from the local market, and that’s about it. People are actually following the rules, even though you're technically allowed to get some exercise near your house, like taking a walk at a safe distance or running a lap...

He works for a construction firm where everyone is an immigrant, and he says despite everything management tells them about following the protocols, nobody gives a damn. They act like they’re invincible, thinking a little whiskey makes them immune to a virus or whatever. Now they'll probably end up shutting down the whole job site because leadership realizes they're just talking to a brick wall when it comes to safety rules during the lockdown...

Paul Sanders5 said:Look, I'm not talking about people whose dorms actually got trashed or something. I mean plenty of folks just decided to bail on Washington, D.C. entirely. They're heading to places that can't handle it if they actually end up getting sick. Right now, staying put at home is just the smartest move.

So if they chose to leave Washington, D.C., does that automatically make them locals? I mean, I doubt anyone born here with family nearby would ever pack up unless they absolutely had to. Usually, it's someone who already has roots elsewhere and realized that moving back home is a safer bet—especially if their job was cut and they've got nothing left to lose in the city. You see this massive exodus from dorms, apartments, and rentals; it isn't just one specific group of people leaving, it's everyone. Service workers are heading back to their hometowns because everything is shut down and they can't afford rent without a paycheck. The earthquake just sped up an inevitable process...

Personally, I’d never dream of leaving D.C. during a crisis like this, regardless of whether there are more tremors coming or health scares... everyone I care about is right here. What good is some vacation house on the coast? I'd just be sitting there alone with even more to worry about. And I know plenty of families that are split right down the middle—one parent stays here while the other heads south—so they end up divided. You don't have to be biased to see that happening after reading the news. ☕

Those typical NYC types, please. Who actually gives a damn if they have nowhere to sleep? Let them crash in Central Park while they wander around aimlessly. And don't get me started on the college kids ditching the dorms—they're just as much part of that NYC crowd, all acting like "chaos students" because they think they can escape to the coast where there's less virus. People are even saying you can hang out in isolation with a few friends or play some casual backyard games...

Honestly, this is a top-tier article that hardly anyone is giving enough credit to.

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsan...-and-different

I came across some data suggesting the transmission rate for the flu sits around 1.3, while for Coronavirus it’s anywhere from 2.3 to 3.3—this piece specifically cites 2.3. It’s actually insane how fast this thing spreads. The article also points out that while the flu virus lingers for about 5 to 6 days, Coronavirus stays around for 11 to 14, and since you don't show symptoms immediately, tons of people are walking around spreading it without having any clue. It’s a total mess... they're locking all the seniors in their homes and isolating every high-risk group, but what the hell are the rest of us supposed to do...

Noah Roberts46 said:Well, that's because most people aren't actually working right now, or they're just "working from home."

I mean, were they even working 24/7 before this? It seems like everyone just treated this whole thing like one giant summer vacation. A friend of mine texted me today—she was out at Maksimir with her parents and the kids, just playing volleyball. Like, what the hell? Then she calls me two hours later, absolutely livid, cursing out the police for chasing them away. She's all, "Where's the democracy?" Like she can just do whatever she wants because it’s all a conspiracy anyway, and it's just some common flu, so let her play volleyball at Maksimir...🤷

Whenever you tell people they can't go outside, you're always going to end up with a massive crowd of idiots claiming nobody is actually stopping them. Honestly, just implement fines so heavy they'll never recover, and if you're caught walking around and then test positive for Coronavirus, you should automatically go straight to jail. See ya.

God, how can anyone not handle staying home for two weeks? It's fourteen damn days, and then you get to live normally for the rest of the year...

That’s exactly why the Germans slapped those $25,000 fines on people breaking quarantine, yet here you are, trying to grab a coffee on an empty patio at a brewery... If I read that correctly, though, feel free to set me straight,

Ashley Bailey6 said:Not likely.

As soon as the weather warms up, this whole thing becomes a memory.

It won't have nearly the impact of previous outbreaks.

Aside from the hit to the economy, obviously.

Joseph Clark37 said:Well, that's a relief. I was starting to get a little worried, but it looks like there's no reason to be... Thanks @Ashley Bailey6!

Not a single scientist actually knows what’s coming next with the virus—they’re all being incredibly vague about the whole warm-weather theory—but apparently, Ashley Bailey6 has it all figured out and is just shouting "bring on the heat!"...🤣
So, how exactly would the virus survive in warmer climates where temperatures are already climbing?

urbanhawk17 said:The biggest issue is that if the count climbs past 800, we're in trouble because we won't have the space or the ventilators...

That's the current situation in Italy; they lack enough ventilators and hospital beds, so they're literally choosing the younger patients and letting the older ones pass away.

Of course, this all started because doctors brought the virus into the oncology ward... and now it's just panic and chaos. They should have the quarantine results by Monday, maybe a day earlier or later, but it's crucial to reduce the patient load so they have enough ventilators for everyone.

I think our officials mentioned today that we have 800 ventilators in the US, but right now there are only three patients on them. Once you're on a ventilator, you're in critical condition. You can't breathe on your own.

If things take a sharp turn for the worse, there will be problems, and that's why being aware of the quarantine is so important. As a virus, the mortality isn't huge, except for the elderly.

And if it reaches the point where we have to take a ventilator off someone who is 90 just to save someone who is 30, then we are truly in trouble.

And that’s the crux of it, you know? This virus spreads uncontrollably. With the flu, if it catches you, it catches you, but it's different. Here, you're dealing with a virus that attacks your respiratory system, forcing doctors to hook people up to machines that simply aren't available in enough quantity to cover every critical case.
You saw the interview on the news with the President, where he explained that even if nobody new gets infected, the numbers will still skyrocket exponentially. He said if you have 2,000 people sick with this virus and don't implement quarantines for two weeks, you'll end up with 250,000 cases.

Comparing this to the flu is just plain stupid. There’s a vaccine for the flu and actual medications that work, whereas for this, we know basically nothing, which is why everyone is so hyper-focused. If you're vaccinated against the flu, you might feel like crap, but if you do happen to catch it, you'll probably just stay home with some pills and recover. You likely won't even end up in the ER, and you won't pass it to your family because they're vaccinated too, so life carries on normally. You aren't going to infect ten people around you with the flu.

When I had the flu, my grandma would bring me soup and she never caught a thing; she's fine to this day. But if I catch this thing now, I doubt my grandma would be bringing me soup... wouldn't you?

Alright, I’ll bite. Can one of you "it’s just a mild flu" experts explain the logic here? So, let me get this straight: all the virologists, scientists, world leaders, and globally renowned doctors are somehow wrong? The entire global scientific community is hallucinating, but a handful of random people on a message board have it all figured out? Where exactly are you guys pulling these claims from...

Is it actually possible for the entire scientific establishment to be wrong?
Obviously, once a vaccine is fully developed, you can start making comparisons to the flu or whatever, but right now? Comparing this to the flu is just laughable. And that whole argument—that if there were no vaccine for the flu, mortality would be even higher—is even more nonsensical. You're basically saying this virus is such a joke that when it hits, it's just a coin toss whether you live or die, or someone close to you, whereas you just catch the flu by accident.

And please, spare me the "my buddy is a doctor at University Hospital" anecdotes as your primary source of truth.

urbanhawk17 said:If a different strain of the flu hits than what the medical experts predicted, then the vaccine doesn't help at all, I guess.

So you have seasons where you get vaccinated and it does nothing for you. I don't see this level of panic or hysteria, nor do I see people counting the dead.

But that's basically what Plazo said—that if we had called this disease "flu" instead of Covid19, even if it was just a different type of flu, nobody would care.

Why not just reach out to the WHO and explain things to them? Tell them they haven't got a clue. Send a note to the folks shutting down production at places like Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and the rest, telling them there's no need to worry because the Pope said nothing will happen. Tell them it's just "Flu v2," and if they weren't shutting down then, they shouldn't be doing it now.

Or just shoot an email to Merkel; tell her that while they're basically grinding the economy to a halt, you know better than they do. Tell her they're just panic-mongers. After all, the Pope about virus has more info than Merkel does.

By the way, the way they're ramping up these restrictions in an area like Chicago is pretty symptomatic of what's coming. There are maybe 50-60 cases, yet they're setting up massive containment zones for at least 500 people, not to mention hospital capacities. It looks like we're bracing for a total disaster...
Offside Chat Archives (2014-2021) in Soccer ·
Alright, let’s switch gears. I honestly don't get why sports aren't moving forward... at least finish what was started.
I mean, they can just disinfect the stadiums and all the facilities. Players could easily train while staying in quarantine right there on-site. Most of them probably have a hotel nearby anyway. They could just play through it.

If most employers are basically forcing people back to work if they're healthy, how are athletes any different? Fine, isolate the sick ones—once they recover, they can rejoin the group. It's no different than handling injuries or any other illness. Just put them in quarantine so they don't have contact with the outside world, and that's that.

Besides, everyone is already locked down in their own villas 24/7 without seeing anyone.

Run it like that for two months, wrap up the season, and then implement a rule where clubs aren't obligated to pay full salaries during a lockdown—just a percentage. That's what pretty much every company in the world does.

Instead, I'm reading about some club offering a pay cut while things are paused, the players refuse, the club fires them, and now the players are suing for their wages. Give me a break...

Hey Group, someone needs to tell her that this isn't even a big deal; honestly, the flu is way more dangerous and half these numbers are probably exaggerated anyway. It’s not unheard of for flu season to pack hospitals so tight you literally run out of beds and have to just let people pass away... total unnecessary panic ☕
