Not exactly feeling inspired this morning... coffee is basically eating a hole through my stomach.😁😁If I had actually written this last night, you guys would be absolutely drowning in posts right now.😁😁...
...
Pretentious? Please. This was like watching Che Guevara try to dance the mambo on ice. That about sums it up. 😁😁
The thing that makes the movie work is how it avoids being pretentious... it doesn't try too hard to explain why an ordinary guy becomes someone extraordinary... it just lets things happen. I actually appreciate that the film didn't feel the need to answer all those questions.

...yet you've posted more replies than all of them combined without even seeing how HH bathes in a sink during the opening scene...😁😁

...it wouldn't hurt if you actually picked it up yourself and realized the whole thing is barely even a hundred pages long...

Douglas Phillips4 said:Look, I went into this movie pretty indifferent (for the obvious reasons mentioned above 😬)

...I think I had the exact same issue... I won't go off on a tangent about singers performing with their mouths closed... but I noticed this one cut right at the start where they slice a shot mid-sentence and mid-motion... I don't know, it just caught my eye, even though I wasn't looking for it...
Anyway, I've spent way more words on this mediocre flick than it actually deserves, so I'm out...

..Yeah, this change in perspective is definitely interesting... even if the director usually sticks to thrillers, Amenabar never does superficial work, so even though the subject matter is different from his usual stuff, the transition doesn't feel jarring at all... fantastic directing...

Reggie and Ethel are definitely Oscar contenders 🙂

...I’ve got nothing but praise for Amenábar... you might have to wait a couple of years for the truth to surface, but when it finally hits, it doesn't disappoint...:-)

Man, how many times do I have to say it? Any list that actually starts a fight is a good list... that's literally why they exist.

The whole life of Howard Hughes was a total wreck. If they'd looked at his entire existence instead of just obsessing over planes and movies, they might have actually had something worth watching.

...sure, but the movie doesn't show any of that..
...
yeah, but again, none of that makes it into the film..
and you can't blame anyone but the director for that..

this movie isn't going to stick with me for anything...

I bet you're just all about the guys. 😬

...it honestly feels like Martin Scorsese is playing that exact angle... basically saying 'if you don't vote for me, you're gay'...😁😁....

Daniel Lopez said:A single bath in a sink isn't going to cause lasting trauma. Don't you think his mom probably told him that every single day while she was scrubbing him?
And even if planes aren't your thing, the movie is still about him, and he definitely cared about them. 😉 😁

1. nope. 😁
2. That's exactly my point... someone just really needed to explain that to Scorsese.

Daniel Lopez said:Seriously, the whole thing starts with this weird, obsessive focus on germs out of nowhere. 😁 That opening scene feels totally random...

...the real issue is how poorly constructed the plot is. Just because he once bathed in a sink doesn't mean he needs deep-seated trauma, and then suddenly he's cured just because 😁😁😁 told him to wash his face. They’re focusing on all the wrong things. The movie drags for two hours with nothing happening... plus, I couldn't care less about planes. It doesn't even have to be planes; it could have been anything, but that should've been the core. Everything about this film is one-dimensional and shallow. It's just glamorous boredom. 😁...

..this is a total disaster...gross. It’s like those overpriced, tasteless tomatoes you find at Whole Foods...zero flavor, zero soul...just boring. It feels thrown together without any rhyme or reason. I mean, what is Howard even doing? I sat through three hours just to learn he likes milk and building planes. We jump into the middle of a movie...he's filming a movie...but why? Why the sudden pivot to aviation? How? Why? Then there's that scene where he's naked in his room because he had an accident, filmed with some microscopic lens tech that looks so fake even Howard wouldn't believe it. He leaves the room, the movie ends...but how does it actually end? What was the point? Where's the momentum? What is even happening here? Is Howard really so dull that he had nothing to say? Nobody cares about his plane stories. And what does his mother have to do with any of this? So, he decides as a kid he'll build planes and get rich while sitting in a bathtub, and that's the whole story? That's it? This movie evokes absolutely nothing. Every single character is bland and hollow. Honestly, Scorsese, if you win an Oscar for this, just quit. Too bad there isn't an Oscar for robbing the audience or for pure boredom. I wasn't expecting much, yet I'm still disappointed...congrats on achieving that, though. Bravo, Scorsese. If you hadn't made that massive flop *New York Gangsters*, I might have actually thought you had talent left in you.
thanks.

blueranger12 said:Yeah, it’s an anti-globalist movie. It basically argues everything is just the same old crap—only before, you had creeps who would perform abortions for free. Honestly, at least the movie has a point. 😁

Correction: they were creeps who thought they were doing it for nothing. 😁😁

blueranger12 said:It’s not even sick, 😁 it's just pure mania. She can't tell right from wrong. You ask her for an abortion, she does it. *Whirr, whirr, whirr*—and suddenly you're good as new!
But oh no, I'M GOING TO DIE, YOU KILLED MY BABY, I'M HEADING STRAIGHT TO HELL!!! 🙂
You aren't going to hell, honey, stop being ridiculous. There, there. Your tea is ready! See ya! 👋
BWAAAHAAAA 🙂
Classic American 😁

😁😁...but that's literally the whole point of the movie...they go through all these psychiatric evaluations and doctor visits and it's still the same result...except everyone is just in it for the paycheck...

blueranger12 said:I don't buy it. Maybe she's some cultist straight out of Rosemary's Baby looking for Satan's heir. Or maybe it's something else. 🙂 😁

If you say so... personally, I think when someone acts that perfect, it’s just plain creepy. 😁😁😁

blueranger12 said:Oh yeah, right. Pure human kindness. Such a deep topic, truly. Her character didn't gain any depth at all. She’s out here performing abortions at sixteen, yet he somehow makes her a saint. If they had added some past trauma or even just a grudge against young women, it might have worked. This was shallow. The whole movie felt surface-level from start to finish.

And we're back to "shallow" again...🤣.🤣...
..maybe you're just a mindless product of modern consumerism and can't recognize actual goodness? 😁😁

blueranger12 said:Sure, everything you're saying makes perfect sense. Tea's good, too. 🤣 Vera, tea, and New York City. Add family to the mix along with Reg. Vera and Reg. I, and you've got a recipe for something interesting. Honestly, I wanted a movie that felt like a deep dive into the social fabric of New York, but this just feels like a single themed episode from some British procedural. I can't get behind it. It didn't move me at all.

Honestly, I don't even know how to measure this "hit or miss" thing anymore... if my take didn't bother you even a little bit, then nothing will.😁The "touch" should have been the film's real standout feature—even if they didn't lean into it as much as they could have. 😁 )....
...
The only thing bothering me is that the main character's motivation—this whole "pure human goodness" thing—feels totally unconvincing. That's what really loses me. 🙂 😁
