Help with dual-drive OS setup! in IT Support ·
just
Try unplugging the hard drive with the (D: partition) and see if you can boot straight from the SSD (C: Drive).
If the OS kicks in from the C: Drive, then you're golden—it means you can wipe the old OS off that D: drive without any drama.
ps: Just a heads up, make sure you're doing all that disconnecting and reconnecting while the PC is completely powered down.
Driver Easy in IT Support ·
Nah, honestly, you should steer clear of those kinds of programs. I usually just head straight to the manufacturer's website and grab the specific driver meant for my build. Half the time, those "newest" drivers end up being total headaches, so it's better to just stick with the one that actually plays nice with your OS.

Even the cheapest one from $40 will do the trick.
If you're working with an older motherboard that still has a PATA connector, you could just go with a standard PATA flat cable.
How to migrate macOS from one laptop to another? in IT Support ·
Look, you can clone a hard drive if you really want to, but here’s the catch: since macOS is already baked into the old laptop's hardware with all its specific drivers, it’s almost always better to just start fresh with a clean install. If you try to force a clone, you run the risk of the whole thing just refusing to boot up entirely. Plus, you might run into some annoying headaches with activation once the system realizes the hardware profile has shifted.
A4 paper in San Francisco... in IT Support ·
"...so you're looking at both and they say A4, but the pixel counts aren't matching up..." 🤦

First off, you gotta realize that pixel size isn't some fixed thing—it shifts constantly depending on your resolution.
Powerline Communication via smart meter in IT Support ·
First, try testing from upstairs, and if that doesn't work, give it a shot from that apartment right above the basement.
Old-school meters—you know, the ones with the spinning dials? They had this electrical coil inside that basically chokes out the signal because of the inductance. Newer digital meters use a "shunt" instead, which doesn't have nearly as much inductance, so you won't see much signal loss between those two powerline adapters.
The real kicker, though, is making sure everything is running on the same phase (like R, S, or T).
Honestly, the biggest headache nowadays isn't even the meters; it's all the cheap junk with crappy power filters, like TVs, PCs, LED bulbs, or those random phone chargers. They just murder the powerline signal.
How to connect a projector to external speakers in IT Support ·
Looking at the specs for this projector, there's no SCART port to be found. It just lists "Interfaces ---- VGA in, HDMI in, USB 2.0 Type B."
So, you can't just grab the audio straight from the SCART connection on an ATSC receiver.

Instead, you'd have to hook it up to an audio amp with speakers—maybe something like an old home theater system you have lying around.
Why does it keep asking me to update? in IT Support ·
Look, you didn't actually buy Windows 10 OS from Microsoft; you basically just paid for a license to use it. They still hold all the cards when it comes to making changes, which is exactly what you agreed to when you clicked "accept" during the installation process.
In your settings, you can actually pick a specific window of time for updates so they don't mess with your workflow. It's right there in the top image (the line just above that red exclamation mark).
Why does it keep asking me to update? in IT Support ·
I always keep my updates running; I don't see any reason to turn them off. My Windows Security gets updated every single day without fail, and as for this 20H2 thing—it had been sitting there as an available update for about 15 days before I finally just went ahead and installed it yesterday.
Issues with my USB 3.1 drive in IT Support ·
So, I decided to install Windows 10 version 1511 on this slower PC of mine just to mess around with some stuff, and after about an hour, I realized it actually runs just as smoothly as my high-end rig. 😁
I popped open the Task Manager, and man, the number of processes hogging memory is like three times lower than what you see on the latest build... 🤦
Issues with my USB 3.1 drive in IT Support ·
Exactly. Back when I was using Windows 7, if you swapped a USB port, you’d often have to go through the whole headache of reinstalling drivers just to get a camera or a printer to show up. On Windows 10, though, it just works without any fuss. I totally skipped over 😁.
Issues with my USB 3.1 drive in IT Support ·
It’ll probably be because a dead Windows 7 system is just too "slow" to even recognize it 😁
Most likely, newer gear just doesn't have drivers for Windows 7 anymore.

ps: USB 2.0 is rated at 480Mbps by standard
New RAM won't boot Windows in IT Support ·
Where am I supposed to look if there isn't even a "post"? Everything is just black, and he didn't mention if there's a "beep code" coming from the motherboard speaker.
Connecting two PCs via LAN cable in IT Support ·
A basic CAT3 phone cable works just fine, though you’d probably get better results using some upgraded blue and white twisted pair 😁
I actually used a 20m flat, flexible 4x0.3 phone cable for years. Once my kids moved out, I swapped the router from their room over to the hallway near the jack, and honestly, it didn't change a thing regarding the DSL speeds. Later on, I just crimped an RJ45 onto that same cable, and now it works perfectly as a 100Mbps LAN connection for the PC in that room.
WiFi issues/troubleshooting in IT Support ·
First off, just double-check that your Wi-Fi is actually enabled. It’s also possible the SSID is set to hidden, which would explain why it isn't popping up on your phone...
It would definitely help if we knew which router you're working with here?
WiFi issues/troubleshooting in IT Support ·
Jump into your router settings and double-check that the SSID and password match exactly what you've got set up on your phone.
If you're not really sure how to navigate that stuff, honestly, just give a tech expert a call.
I wouldn't say that, because you actually wrote:
"I've got a 120GB Gigabyte SSD inside and a hard drive that I disconnected while trying to fix these issues."
IT Scams: The stuff you won't believe! in IT Support ·
Looks like I’m officially from the era of 5.25" floppies... just like this hardware 😁
WiFi issues/troubleshooting in IT Support ·
Being a few feet away won't be an issue.
The lightning strike probably hit the device through the electrical or phone lines if they're run above ground.
For a desktop, you could've just grabbed a LAN card—way cheaper than any WiFi PCI card out there.
I’d honestly never touch a PCI WiFi card. If you grab a USB WiFi adapter with a long cable, you can actually mount the adapter higher up to get better range, plus you don't deal with those signal losses you get with coaxial cables.
WiFi issues/troubleshooting in IT Support ·
Some people seem to think Wi-Fi is actually a decent substitute for a hardwired LAN connection, or maybe they just can't stand the sight of a cable running across the floor 😢
I’m pretty sure the Wi-Fi issues on a desktop stem from the fact that those wireless adapters are basically boxed in, which messes with the signal compared to other devices. I suggested switching over to an Ethernet cable to see if that fixes things... but nobody seems interested in taking my advice
