Endocrinology and birth control pills in Women's Health ·
Since you're heading in specifically for the prolactin check, I don't think the birth control is really the culprit here... though, honestly, I’d still mention it to the endocrinologist just to be safe... you know how these things go. And they'll probably run your thyroid levels too, since sometimes a high TSH can actually kick those prolactin numbers up a notch...

good luck 😘

Laura Bishop said:Why?
I’m asking because my OB-GYN is recommending I start birth control to get my cycle under control. When I asked about side effects, he basically told me there aren't any. But then I come on here and read posts where women are all like, "never again with the pill!"
So... why?

If your doctor tells you there are zero side effects, you probably need a new doctor. It's like they haven't even glanced at the warning label in the box, let alone actually bothered to research the meds they're handing out...
Side effects vary wildly from person to person. Some people put on weight, some deal with bloating, others get headaches—especially at first—nausea, depression, a totally dead libido... and then things can get messy when you try to stop taking them (again, not everyone, but looking at this forum, it seems like a common theme)... personally, I think if pills are the absolute last resort, fine. But if there’s any other way to handle it... don't take them...

Does anyone know what this could be? My OB/GYN is seeing me in the morning this week but I can't make it to an appointment no matter what because of college and work... I'm going to lose my mind by next week... I did a little Googling; they start talking about tumors and every worst-case scenario imaginable, please someone help if you've dealt with anything similar??

Just calm down a little, everything will be fine... "tumors" is just a catch-all term for any kind of growth, so it doesn't necessarily mean something scary... my daughter-in-law was bleeding constantly because she had uterine polyps; her period wouldn't stop for months, then they removed the polyps and she's totally fine now... don't panic prematurely, just go see the doctor... health is more important than missing one day of classes at the university😉

For the last two months, things have been coming every 15-20 days, lasting about a week, and then just this weird spotting that never seems to end... if anyone has any idea what this could be, please let me know. I'm starting to panic a little. Obviously, I know I need to see an OB-GYN, but I've just been waiting for it to stop first...

Have you actually seen a doctor yet? I was bleeding for ten days straight, then ten days later it would start all over again... turns out after a long time, it was endometriosis. My previous doctor just kept throwing antibiotics at me, claiming I had inflammation in both ovaries, over and over... he couldn't even be bothered to send me for an ultrasound 😠 because he didn't have one available (I was a student back then, so I was seeing some intern at the university clinic 😵)

I mean, you're an adult. You're mature enough to decide if you want to protect yourself with the pill, and your boyfriend shouldn't really be influencing that choice...

Then there's him claiming they'll mess up your hormones... honestly, sounds like he's a bit uneducated on the subject... since plenty of women actually take them specifically to regulate their hormones...plus, there are so many different types available now, ranging from low-dose to high-dose options...

Speaking from experience, I take low-dose ones and haven't had any issues or side effects. Not to mention how much more relaxed I am about protection; as long as you're consistent, the chance of pregnancy is incredibly slim...

And if you end up with a brand that doesn't sit right with you, you can always just switch...
As for whether they're healthy or not... statistics say one thing, but talking to gynecologists, today's low-dose pills aren't considered harmful, and you don't even need to take breaks anymore. Using them actually lowers the risk of cervical cancer and stuff like that...

Ultimately, it's on you to decide. Just explain to him that while he’s entitled to his opinion, the final call is yours...

A lot of girls using birth control to fix hormonal issues are people who already had imbalances before they ever touched the pill... it's about regulation...
But if your hormones are perfectly fine to begin with, then yeah, taking them can definitely throw things out of whack, because you're basically bombarding your system with synthetic hormones for no reason...

When talking to OB-GYNs, sure, they might say one thing, but pharmacists—the ones who actually know the ins and outs of both the pros and the cons—don't always share that same perspective (at least not the ones I've talked to)😉

Of course, it's her choice whether she uses them or not...

Kimberly Martin81 said:And who am I supposed to be, anyway? It’s not like they’ll even see me at the ER if my doctor is on shift... so I guess my only option is to wait until tonight. Just have to tough it out until then...😢And if I don't end up in the ER... I'll let you know...👍

Look, just try to get to the ER right now. When the pain hits that hard, they’re supposed to listen... I mean, what kind of doctor ignores pain that intense? That’s literally what the emergency room is for... 😕

Just figured I’d jump in here and vent for a second too. My period just started and honestly... I am dying over here. The cramps are brutal, feeling nauseous, everything just hurts... I managed to knock back two Advil and now I'm finally heading to bed. 😢 😢 😢

It’s just flared up again... untreated. I ended up getting some vaginal suppositories and went ahead with a culture just to see what exactly we're dealing with here. For now, though... I think I'm done.
Switching to the Alara cream because the other stuff is just way too harsh... and yeah, I am officially firing my gynecologist. It’s happening.

feralbadger23 said:I went through the exact same thing... managed to kick that caffeine habit somehow. I used to down three cups a day and if I missed one, I was basically a zombie. Now? It's gone. I just have one once a week for the pure pleasure of it... usually after a big Sunday brunch😁.
For anyone looking to quit: take your vacation time. That's your best window to break the cycle.

Three a day isn't an addiction... I drink three before I even get out of bed in the morning.😳

cosmicmaker6 said:😲😲😲, I can definitely feel it on my left side, though it’s barely noticeable on the right... honestly, I am starting to spiral a little bit here.

It might sound bizarre, but the sensation only really hits while I'm sitting still; once I stand up and start moving my wrist around, it just vanishes. wtf?

If it feels like things are grinding, like there's actual grit inside the joint, you definitely need to go get it checked out...
Bone density issues at 21? in Health ·
My joints are creaking too, especially my knees 🙄

The clicking itself is fine—or at least that’s what the doctors tell you, that it's nothing to worry about—but if you lock your wrist or move a joint and it feels like there's actual grit grinding inside... then you know something is actually wrong

I have zero interest in arguing with idiots. They just drag you down to their level and then beat you with their own lack of experience!

James Rogers53 said:Just a guess... you a vegetarian or something?😁

🙂 😁 Vegetarian? Yeah, right... hardly. 😉 I just eat whatever tastes good... honestly... if it hits the spot, I'm having it. No rules. 🙂
James Rogers53 said:It feels a bit ridiculous to me because it’s been proven that soy is loaded with estrogens😕
And regarding the idea that farm-fresh milk from small local farms is the healthiest option... yeah, I'm totally with you on that. From what I gather, big corporations (like Walmart or Ferrero...) buy up milk from those smaller producers anyway. Or do they?😕

But we're talking about plant-based, not animal-based estrogens, so there's a distinction there... and I'm not sure if it's actually "loaded" with them, I just know that milk usually isn't recommended for endometriosis, much like meat or anything else of animal origin where hormones are added...
Look, I've been drinking water first thing in the morning for years now... and it's just what I do. I’m not trying to lose weight, and honestly, it hasn't made a dent in my weight anyway, even though I've been knocking back two glasses every single morning for over five years. It's just because I'm thirsty, and let's face it, plain water is the best way to go... but biology is funny. A 16-year-old and someone in their 30s aren't going to have the same reaction to it...

Drinking water in the morning 👍 might work for him, but if he lost weight, don't assume you will too. He's only 16... he's still dealing with puberty, after all...😉

jadesailor14 said:Well, if you're such an expert, why aren't you giving the kid any actual advice? 😕
Why just sit there acting all superior like something terrible is about to happen 🤔

God forbid I'm being dramatic... I wouldn't have mentioned that he shouldn't be doing 100 sit-ups every single night without protecting his lower back, like everyone else is telling him to do... I was just offering what I honestly think is the best advice for a kid his age. And who knows his psychomotor skills and personality better than his PE teacher? Someone who could actually point him toward a sport that fits him—or one he actually wants to play—by talking to him directly, maybe even keeping an eye on his interests during class...
How to lose body fat? in Health ·
And how on earth is anyone supposed to spot issues like heart problems if they don't check 😕
Nick didn't say don't do 100 sit-ups. If you actually paid attention to what was being said, you'd see I'm not talking about the sheer number of reps... look, you have to train the antagonists too—doesn't matter if it's today or tomorrow, but there needs to be some balance—otherwise, you end up with postural deformities. You guys were doing plenty of other exercises that involve the back muscles, not just hitting 100 sit-ups every single night like he’s being advised... and the kid doesn't realize it's common sense to include those too.... "Coincidentally," I know a thing or two about kinesiology from both a professional standpoint and life experience... and wouldn't you know it, I actually work with kids aged 6 to 14, including a group with special needs 🙄

I'll leave it at that. Go ahead, kid, keep doing those 100 sit-ups without any back work, and in a year you'll be walking around with cramped abs and an overextended back well there's your deformity... (which advice 😵)

Have a nice day, and goodbye 👍 no offense intended

Laura Mendoza said:Look, I wasn't attacking you just because of the questions you asked him; my issue is that your approach is being far too systematic. We aren't talking about him suddenly deciding to become a professional athlete training intensely seven days a week. For just playing soccer with his friends, these kinds of measures are way too extreme. You’re going to end up scaring him off.

I never even suggested a full physical, though honestly, it's probably better to have one than not... but look, nobody is actually listening to what the kid is saying. He knows he needs to fix his diet and get some cardio in to drop the extra weight, yet everyone keeps pushing this idea of playing soccer with a group... maybe he just isn't a team sports guy. Maybe track and field would solve his "issue" without all the pressure...
And who's to say he shouldn't start a sport right now? It's actually the perfect time if he wants to see results in a couple of years. Is he going to wait until he's 20?
The worst part is when people who played a little ball in high school suddenly think they're experts in kinesiology and start handing out medical advice... that's how you end up with kids dealing with permanent physical issues... telling a kid to just crank out 100 crunches every night is terrible advice for someone who doesn't understand muscle antagonists... if he misses the opposing muscle groups, he's looking at postural deformities... etc, etc...
